New to link ups? This post has tips for getting the most out of them.

If we were having coffee, I hope that I would be telling you how much fun I had at the National Press Club Beat The Deadline 5K this morning. After running too much too soon before our vacation, I’ve been trying to be very cautious with my comeback this time around.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I’ve dropped out of my first two fall races: The Reston Perfect 10 and Ragnar Relay. I really was looking forward to experiencing the awesomeness of Ragnar again, but since my foot still needs to be babied, I’m afraid it won’t be fully healed by October 2. Instead of risking a last-minute DNS or a mid-relay DNF, I asked my team captain to replace me. 🙁

If we were having coffee, I’d ask if you have any plans for Labor Day. Beach? Pool? Backyard? I’m not sure what we’re doing, but I hope to spend some time outside! If you are looking for a good book to relax with, check out my latest book reviews.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I’m not sad that summer is over–fall is my favorite time of year–but I am struggling with getting out of bed when it’s pitch dark outside. I know it will only get worse for the next few months but it seems like it happened so suddenly!

Before I let you go, I have to ask if you’ve seen my pictures from the Grand Canyon. I promise they really are worth checking out. 😉

  1. I’m sorry you had to back out of the races. Bern there, done that, it sucks — but sometimes it’s the right thing to do, right? Something more awesome is out there for us, right?

No big plans. Run my 9 miler today with friends, maybe a little retail therapy, some grilling & rest — it’s been a hard week. Too little sleep xp& I’m really tired.

    Hope your weekend is awesome!

  2. Backing out of races is NO fun– I did it last summer when I was I pregnant! Happy Labor Day weekend! So bittersweet… fall days and colder temps will be here soon!

  3. I hope you had a great run this morning.

So sorry about your foot. I am considering dropping out of one of my races in October, my training has been awful.

Labor Day plans-book festival in DC with the kiddies, Labor Day BBQ on the bay, maybe a long run and cookouts. Have a great weekend!

    Thanks for the link-up.

  4. Oh the feet…mine are bothering me. I’m glad I have a low mileage marathon training plan. And then some time off after the race…

  5. Sorry to hear that you had to drop out of Ragnar! I think it’s really smart though. It’s so hard not to jump back in full force after an injury isn’t it? Hopefully I will see you at one of the fall races. Great catching up over coffee today!

  6. Have a great holiday weekend! Hope the foot did well this morning at the 5K!

  7. I’m so sorry you had to drop out of your races – I so know that feel all too well and it’s not fun, but it’s a smart choice! Hopefully your foot will continue to heal and then you can get back to running the way you want. Enjoy your long weekend!

  8. HoHo Runs says:

I hope you enjoyed your 5k this morning. Sorry you had to back out of the other two races, but it was the wise thing to do. We have no plans for the holiday weekend. Lake, grilling. Typical weekend stuff. FOOTBALL starts today. So there’s that. As always, thanks for this monthly link. It’s a favorite.

I hope your team wins! 🙂 I have another friend who fill my FB page with ROLLTIDE! I really love our coffee dates too – we have such a great group every time!

  9. Oooo, I hope your foot is getting better. So sorry you had to drop out of your races.
I love fall but it is getting harder to get up in the morning, and its only the beginning of September ! Thanks for the link up

  10. I’m sorry that your foot is giving you trouble and you had to drop out of Ragnar! Fall is my favorite time of year too! I love the cooler temps and all the pumpkin things!
I hope you have a great Labor day weekend and enjoy some time outside!

  11. Well Boo hate to hear that about your foot issues, but hey it is what it is and you will go on. There will be other races, take care of yourself! I’ll be spending the rest of the day traveling and in Tupelo MS for my half on Sunday. It’s too dang hot to be running races in MS but at least it starts at 5am! Thank you for the link up!! Love reading everyone’s posts!

    • Coco says:

Oh my gosh, I do like to run early, but I’ve never seen a 5 am race start! I hope you are staying close to the starting line! I can’t wait to hear how well it goes for you. 😉

  12. Carrie Skoll says:

So sorry you have to drop out of Ragnar. But, so glad your foot is holding up for some shorter distances. Congrats on the awesome 5K this morning!!!

  13. MCM Mama says:

Bummer on dropping races! I had to drop Ragnar too, but for scheduling conflicts. Congrats on your fast finish this morning!

  14. So sorry to hear about your races, and especially Ragnar. But you’re doing the smart thing. Wishing you a smooth comeback to running and a Happy Labor Day Weekend!

  15. Marcia says:

Sorry about the DNS’s. But better safe than sorry right? Wishing you continued healing! Fall is my fave as well, but it still saddens me to see summer end. I feel like we get into the fall then holiday whirlwind then another year is gone just like that. Too fast. Loooong relaxing kayak trip for me this weekend!

  16. Well, sad to back out of 2 races but like you said you don’t want to commit and not finish! I have not filled out my fall races yet either, waiting to see what the ortho says about my big toe, UGG I am ready to be over the foot drama! I did run 9 miles this morning and all seems well and a hot golf date with the hubby tomorrow 🙂 enjoy and thanks for the coffee!

  17. Your Grand Canyon photos are gorgeous! Sorry to hear you have to DNS two races, but hopefully you’ll continue to heal ASAP! I’m going to be at the Royals baseball game in Labor Day!

  18. Coco, backing out of a race might be a bummer but so smart. We know our bodies and what we can and can’t do. We have no plans for this weekend, I am taking a break from heading to the pool and I don’t want to be on the roads anyway this holiday. I am looking forward to hanging with the family, catching up on blogging, going to Pure Barre everyday, family movie night and just relaxing. Thanks for coffee today, have a great weekend.

  19. oh i hope you do a recap for the race this morning! i would’ve gone but i had 10 on my schedule. the darkness seems like it just happened all of a sudden. thanks again for hosting!

  20. Sorry to hear about the races – when that happens to me, I try to remember that they have these races every year so it is better to run them healthy.

I am heading over to your book review – stat. I just read some books with twists including The Good Girl by Mary Kubica and Dear Daughter by Elizabeth Little.

Fall is my FAVE season, too! Humidity be gone – bring on pumpkins and the need for a light sweater!

  21. So sorry you had to drop out of the Ragnar, but good that you are listening to your body. I’m super excited for Fall, too! But enjoying this last summer weekend 🙂

  22. Farrah says:

I hope your foot recovers soon, and yay for Labor Day! (I actually have the day off, for once! :O!)

I’m a little sad about summer leaving since that’s my favorite season, but fall is probably my second-favorite, so it’s a-okay! 😛

  23. Kelli says:

Sorry to hear you had to pull out of some of your fall races. That is a bummer but it is a smart decision when you’re healing from an injury. I hope you’re enjoying the weekend!

  24. So sorry about your races but better safe than sorry. And wow, your Canyon photos are beautiful.

  25. This is my first time on your blog. I’m sorry to hear that you had an injury. Congrats on the smart decision you made on opting out of this race. I know it hurts, but it’s all for the better:)
I did check out your pics of the Grand Canyon. They are amazing!

  26. Pauli says:

You might find it strange that when you see a post from me it is always weeks later. Every month or so I get a chance to sit and binge read your blog. Because of the rain today soccer was cancelled and I have extra morning time.

Labor Day Weekend (aka Anniversary Weekend) For our 23rd we celebrated by going to Jim Thorpe, PA. My husband bought train tickets to take us up a mountain then we got on the bikes he reserved and coasted down the 25 mile bike path back to Jim Thorpe, PA. If you haven’t done this I highly recommend it.

On the left was a river. You could see rafters paddling through the rapids. Every so often you would pass a backboard along the trail. I was hoping they were for the rafters and not the bikers. On the right every so often you would pass a waterfall. The scenery was gorgeous!
