We interrupt this healthy living blog to bring you Banana Twinkies Bread Pudding from The Twinkies Cookbook. Yes, this is a real thing, and yes, I bought a box of Twinkies® and made this recipe!
The Twinkies Cookbook Review
As described by the publisher, The Twinkies Cookbook includes “wonderfully wacky recipes submitted by Twinkies aficionados across the country.” I would say that it includes some wonderful and some wacky recipes, since you won’t catch me trying the chicken salad sandwich recipe that has you halve the Twinkies and scrape out the cream filling to use for the dressing (blended with raspberry preserves and balsamic vinegar), and use the sponge cake as the bread. Um, no.
It does have some good dessert ideas. My favorite is the Twinkies fruit skewers recipe that uses quartered Twinkies with chunks of fruit. That’s a healthy balance, right? And using Twinkies for strawberry shortcake is a great shortcut idea. Those recipes are pretty simple, but decided I was up for more of a challenge with the Banana Twinkies Bread Pudding recipe.
Banana Twinkies Bread Pudding Ingredients
- 10 Twinkies, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 3 cups milk
- 3 eggs
- 2/3 cups of sugar (I omitted this)
- 2 large, very ripe bananas
- 1 Tbps cinnamon (I used 2 tsp)
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp vanilla (I used 1 tsp)
- 1/2 cup dried cherries or cranberries (I omitted this)
- 1/2 cup lightly toasted pecans (I omitted this)
- 3 Tbps unsalted butter, diced into small pieces (I used about 1 Tbs)
Mmm, Twinkies!
Banana Twinkies Bread Pudding Directions
- spray 9 X 13 baking dish with cooking spray or grease with butter
- unwrap Twinkies and use serrated knife to cut in 4-6 pieces, place in large bowl
- in a blender, add milk, eggs, bananas, sugar (if using), cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla, and blend until smooth
- pour over Twinkies, gently stir in dried fruit and pecans (if using)
- gently pour mixture into prepared baking dish, cover, and refrigerate for 20 minutes
- preheat oven to 300°F
- place filled baking dish into a larger pan (I used my broiler pan) and pour hot water into the larger pan (surrounding the filled dish) to a depth of about one inch (this will help the bread pudding bake more evenly)
- cover with foil and bake for 1 hour, then uncover and bake for 15-20 minutes longer until knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.
The recipe also calls for a sweetened whipped cream topping and a rum sauce, but we made do with Reddi-Whip.
I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review, and probably will try a few more recipes, like the Pineapple Upside-Down Twinkies Cakes made in foil packets on the grill, and the Twinkies Tunnel Chocolate Bundt Cake.
Did you like Twinkies or Ho Hos as a kid?
This is freaking hilarious. What about Twinkies French Toast?
That recipe is on page 111!
omg. First of all I LOVED Twinkies as a kid!! My hubby loves both bread pudding and Twinkies so I’m gonna keep this far away from him because he will be demanding me to make it all the time!!! Haha
Wow who knew! Love it! I can’t remember the last time I had a twinkie 🙂
Wow, that’s crazy that they have a whole cook book devoted to twinkies 🙂 I loved them as a kid. Though I can’t imagine the savory recipes which would use twinkies. The one you described does not sound too appealing.
Not gonna lie…looks delicious!
Thanks! It was. 😉
I loved Zingers as a kid. They had frosting on top. They may be the southern equivalent to Twinkies or Ho Hos (oh look…my name). Anyway, this dessert looks divine. No calories either, right?
Right. The calories all leak out when you cut the Twinkies into pieces.
I loved Twinkies, HoHos, & especially SuzyQs as a kid.
Now I think there’s something kind of scary about a baked good that never goes bad!
You have to have something besides canned beans in your emergency shelter. 😉
This is hilarious! I was definitely a Ho Ho girl myself.
HO HOs!!!
unrolled….
and slowly slowly consumed.
and then repeat 🙂
Exactly. After carefulyl peeling off the choclatey coating ….
This looks so yummy! I’ve never had a Twinkie before but I was all about the hoho’s as a kid.
Remember when Twinkies were gone for a hot minute??? Ha! Well clearly they’re back in full force, especially in this recipe.
Can you believe, I have never had one before?!
It was a tragedy in our house since it also took my husband’s beloved Wonder Bread off the shelves!
