Today is my 26th wedding anniversary. Last year we celebrated our 25th with an epic 67 mile bike ride, but this year I have a business trip that will take me out of town all day. Maybe my husband will read this while he’s waiting for me to get home, and know that my heart is with him no matter where I am.
When you marry your high school sweetheart, it doesn’t take long before you’ve lived more of your life together than you ever lived apart.
When you marry your high school sweetheart, people at your high school reunion will share memories of your early days together that you forgot.
When you marry your high school sweetheart, watching The Goldbergs will remind you of what you wore during your dating days and how many hours you spent making mix tapes for each other.
When you marry your high school sweetheart, it’s hard to tell your kids that they’re not old enough for serious dating.
When you marry your high school sweetheart, he will support you through your one semester of grad school, three short-term jobs, and four years of law school, and then he will back you up when you have to put in long hours as an associate, celebrate when you make partner, and not complain when partnership means even longer hours at work.
When you marry your high school sweetheart, he will live through your days learning to cook, counting calories, following Atkins, doing South Beach, and trying to go vegetarian, and you will only be a little bit horrified when he asks for Father’s Day dinner from Roy Rogers.
When you marry your high school sweetheart, he will watch the kids while you go to your step aerobics class, do your Firm exercise tapes, and take up running, and then he will buy you a bike so you have something fun to do together now that the kids are off at college.
When you marry your high school sweetheart, you know he loves the real you because he’s seen you without make-up, without sleep, with 40 extra pounds, during natural childbirth, being selfish, being generous, with tears streaming down your face, with your fists clenched in rage, and with your heart soaring with joy.
When you marry your high school sweetheart, you share your dreams for careers, family, and adventure, and you can make your dreams come true together.
