I loved Angela’s High Five Friday Running Survey post so much that I thought I’d chime in with my own.
1. What is your go to pre-run food or drink?
Like Angela, I usually don’t have anything before my shorter runs on weekdays. If I feel hungry I may have a teaspoon of peanut butter. On weekends, I usually fix a Kashi whole rain waffle with a drizzle of syrup.
2. Do you prefer solo runs or group runs?
I used to be a solo runner until I discovered Moms Run This Town and all the amazing bad-ass mother runners (a/k/a BAMRs) who are willing to join me at o’dark-thirty in all weather. I still enjoy running on my own, but when I’m planning my weekend long run, I usually check to see if there’s a group run in the works that fits my schedule.
3. What is your favorite race memory?
This is a hard one because I usually push myself hard at races and then it’s all a blur. One memory that sticks with me is from the GW Parkway Classic a few years ago. My training had been interrupted by ITB issues, but I had recovered in time to do the race. When I got to mile 8 and realized that I was not in any pain at all, I was so happy! Just feeling healthy and strong at that point brought me so much joy.
4. Have you ever had an injury that took you out of running for more than a month? If so, what was it and how long were you on the shelf?
My worst running injury was my first bout with my ITB. I think I was sidelined for at least a month. Two years ago I had issues with my piriformis and I took it easy for a few months, but I didn’t totally stop running for quite as long. My longest time on the “injured reserve list” was due to my DVT (blood clot), when I was banned from running for 6 months.
5. Are there any races that you have run every year since you started to run or race?
If you check out my Race Recaps page, you will see that there are several races I do every year. I think I’ve only missed the GW Parkway Classic three times (once for a wedding, twice for injuries), and I usually do the Army Ten Miler in the fall and the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in June. I’ve also been lucky enough to get into the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run for the past three years.

Well you know I love my MRTT group too and wouldn’t dream of doing a long run without them. I was recently out for a stress fracture for 8 weeks. So not fun-really missed my running friends. I am slowly getting my miles back up.
Ugh! That’s a long time. Glad you are on the road to recovery!
I use to always eat before a run in the morning but of late I’m finding I’m better off without it for the shorter runs.
I love my local MRTT group! I have ladies who meet me at 4:30am for hill repeats! 🙂
Since I wake up hungry, I have to eat before I run. If I’m running less than 6 miles, I can get by with a pack of fruit snacks. Longer than 6mi, I eat a Greek yogurt.
I strained a hip flexor 2 years ago. I couldn’t even walk without a limp for 4 weeks. It was 8 weeks before I could run. I was very grouchy.
Yes, I really miss the endorphins when I can’t run. I think if I were better about (not) snacking at night I would be hungrier when I wake up. :-0

Glad I could inspire you! Survey’s like this are always fun especially on a Friday. It was fun getting to know you a little better. I never knew you had a DVT. So scary but I’m glad you are better now!

I never eat before I workout/run.
My longest injury recovery was in 2001-02. I was training to run The Disney marathon in January of 2002 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma society. I ended up with a serious stress fracture in my right hip and had 6 months of zero activity (minimal walking even). It wasn’t pretty for anyone in my family!
I always prefer group runs over solo runs because I think they keep us motivated and the chance of having a lazy run is also controlled. Group run is more like a healthy competition where your focus is subtle and less constrained. I prefer solo run when I am in deep thought, I think that is the time when I want to spend a lone time 🙂
