Gearing Up For Spring

The review in this post is sponsored by Tommie Copper. All content and opinions are my own.

Now that it is spring, one thing I am looking forward to is being able to go for a run without having to bundle up in multiple layers. I get really warm when I run, so in winter I have to choose between being cold for the first 1/2 mile or so, or being too warm for the rest of my run. I usually decide to suck it up when I start out, but it’s not fun.

In just two weeks I will be running my first race of 2014–the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile run. While it’s too soon to start checking the weather, I hope that I won’t need to wear the cold weather running gear that’s gotten me through this winter.

I think I have alternated these outfits every week for my long run!

I don’t want to be like the Olympic speed skaters who didn’t try out their new speed skating suits before the Olympics, but it’s hard to figure out what to wear for a spring race when winter is still lingering.

Spring Running Gear–Tommie Copper Review

As I started going through my draw of running gear in anticipation of warmer weather, I noticed how few pairs of compression shorts I have, and how ratty my old favorites are looking. Luckily, Tommie Copper offered to send me some items to review, and let me pick out compression shorts and calf sleeves, since I use and need both!

I tried the calf sleeves first, after a hilly long run. I was surprised at how thin and light the fabric felt, but they still felt like they were providing good compression.

According to the Tommie Copper website, the calf sleeves have a wickable fabric that keeps skin dry, and the copper provides natural anti-bacterial and anti-odor properties. They are supposed to be light enough to sleep in, but I didn’t try that, as sexy as it might be. 😉

I put the shorts to the test with a 30 minute treadmill interval workout. The shorts fit me longer than some people might like, but remember, I am short!

I was pleased at how well they stayed in place–no riding up!

These shorts are so much lighter than my other compression shorts, and I see how they could be worn comfortably under looser shorts, a running skirt, or a dress or jeans (for recovery). Like the calf sleeves, they are made from a wickable fabric that has natural anti-bacterial and anti-odor properties. The fabric also offers UPF 30+ protection, which will be important when the sun comes out to play!

The weather warmed up enough this weekend to wear the shorts on a long run outside, and I think they could be a good choice for race day.

Have you switched out your wardrobe for spring yet?

Do you test out your outfit before race day?

  1. I’m short too so I actually like the look of that length of shorts!
The way this weather’s been going it sometimes feels like I’ll be stuck in my winter gear forever!

  2. Those look great! I love my Tommie Copper ankle sleeves as they give good support without being overly restrictive. In fact, I ran without them the other day and had an angry ankle, bummer. I love the length of those shorts too.

No – I don’t swap clothes in the seasons, but that’s just because we don’t have seasons 😉

Fiercely loyal Tommie Copper fan here… and I HAVE slept in my calf sleeves and in my compression shorts at various times over the years. I love how warm the copper infused fabric makes my skin feel and how supported my muscles are too.

Glad you like your TC gear too.

I’ve never worn any Tommie Cooper stuff – I like the shorts you have on though!! Awesome that they stayed in place!!
I run in the same stuff most of the time since I stick with my treadmill!!

Riding up is the worst. Excessive couch-azzing can also cause that condition. Don’t ask me how I know.

  6. I had such a hard time figuring out what I was going to wear for my half. This weather has been driving me batty! I think that I changed my mind about five times! I’ve never tried Tommie Copper so thank you for this review. They sounds great.

  8. This is the perfect website for anybody who wants to find out about this topic.
You know so much its almost hard to argue with you (not that I really
will need to…HaHa). You certainly put a brand new spin on a topic which has been discussed for
    ages. Excellent stuff, just wonderful!
