Why Nutella Is Not A Healthy Breakfast Food
My son recently asked me to put Nutella® on the grocery list
but with those first two ingredients (sugar, palm oil) I will stay away.
The new pacakging for Sierra Mist® caught my eye
but 37 g of “all natural” sugar is still too much sugar!
I decided to try a different flavor of Clif ZBars
because, hey, if I’m going to eat “white coating” I certainly want it to be organic!
Have you tried a new food product recently?
Did you check the nutrition label?
Like 🙂
Mmmm I love organic White coating (kidding). That's just gross! As I type this I can hear the smack smack smack of my kids chomping away on 1/2 a bagel w A chocolate hazelnut spread on it… Time to chuck that jar bc obviously I didn't look at the label – thanks for the head's up!!
Nutella is AWESOME 🙂 I love it…
I usually read the nutrition info, but I'm more of the "moderation is key" way of thinking, so… 1 Tbsp of nutella instead of a whole cup 🙂
I started eating farro lately; it's good. I do love it that thanks to an excellent baby & toddler cookbook I got, my son got to eat quinoa at 7 months (whereas I was 33 when I tried it for the first time!!!)
Awesome! Organic White Coating! What the heck is that?? I definitely read nutrition labels.
They should call it "awesome sauce."
I don't do sodas or bars (besides lara) much anymore because of ingredients. Although I will admit, Nutella holds a special place in my heart. The rare occasion I have it is always a delight.
Great point though to check the labels! Companies sure know how to market their products to make it seem perfectly healthy.
Interesting you should use the term "food product" instead of food. I'm always game to try new foods, not so sure about food products. Totally agree with Michael Pollan: "Don't eat anything your grandmother wouldn't recognize as food." Of course, if your grandma was into 1960's junk food this doesn't apply (remember Tang?)
Actually, Nutulla just made its debut in my house this week. My appetite has been really weird and I had no idea why, but this might be a lead! I checked the label, but not the ingredients, because it said "all natural". Oops!
The difference in your appetite might be due to your kick-ass workouts!
I'm not knocking Nutella, just spreading the word that its not the most nutritious food product (yes, Maite, that was a deliberate word choice!).
It has 10 g sugar per Tbsp, while peanut butter has only 1.5 g sugar. So, it's more akin to jam than a "nut butter" even though they focus on the hazlenuts.
As for kids and breakfast, I think that almost anything is beter than nothing, and whole wheat toast with Nutella is probably better than the frosted poptarts I got for my kids when they stopped eating cereal!
Nutella is not chocolate hazelnut butter. I knew that thing about palm oil and sugar being the first two ingredients, so instead I make my own chocolate nut butters. You can add creaminess with just a bit of shredded unsweetened coconut.
Yep, I read food labels. I try to get things they have the fewest ingredients and ingredients I recognize as whole foods. I also prefer less sugar varieties. I don't get nutella but you can find other chocolate hazelnut spreads at Whole Foods or other natural food stores and I absolutely love Dark Chocolate Dreams by Peanut Butter & co.!
"Organic White Coating"?? Gross!!!!
Seriously, right?!
Great points about food labeling, sometimes the things that we think are healthy options turn out to be nowhere near healthy. Label reading is a vital skill, and should be taught in schools in my book!
Buyer beware!

They really should bring back "home ec" and include a segment on nutrition. Or maybe they cover it in the health section of P.E.?

Moderation is key! And I purposefully don’t read the Nutella label because no way am I giving that goodness up 🙂 Now, how much is one tablespoon, really . . .
