Keeping Cool With The Ultimate Coffee Date Link Up

Are you enjoying the dog days of summer? We are doing our best to keep cool here, but I still need a cup or two of piping hot coffee before I start my day. I try to drink water the rest of the day, but lately I am really enjoying an ice cold glass of limeade after spending any time outside. Before you head out, please visit my co-host Deborah and comment on other blogs in the link up.

Captivated By Dynamic Sculptures

Art is one of the many things I’ve grown to appreciate more as I’ve gotten older, and since my husband and kids all enjoy visiting modern art museums its one of the few things we still do together that doesn’t involve eating! Maybe it’s the scientist in me, but one of my favorite types of art is dynamic sculptures, including Rube Goldberg machines.

A few years ago I found this installation in a quiet section of the San Jose airport and was captivated!  Continue reading

Wrapping Up July

Ah, the end of July. We still have a month of summer ahead of us, but I’m already noticing that it’s darker when I take my dog out for her early morning walk. The weather in Washington, D.C. is notoriously miserable in August–it’s the heat and the humidity–and we had a taste of that this week. Now that I’ve been there a few times, it’s less stressful going back. I know what the hotel gym is like, I know where the Starbucks is, and I’ve even got a few favorites on the hotel menu. Building Confidence For Climbing

Last weekend my husband, son and I went to a local indoor climbing gym. My son started climbing at college, and it was one of the things I wanted to do with him this summer. Before we went I warned everyone that I would not be any good, and now I know I need more practice building confidence for climbing.

Building Confidence For Climbing

Since no one took a picture of me climbing we’ll have to go back!

The gym we went to offers classes for beginners and also has “open belay” sessions where you are matched with one of their staff members who belays for you. Since my son was not interested in a class, we did the open belaying. We were paired with a great staff member who was just as at ease with my son’s confidence as he was with my hesitation.
