Working And Working And Working Out

This was a tough week. I had a grueling work deadline that kept me burning the midnight oil a few days in a row — assuming 9 pm counts as “midnight,” which it should when I start my work day by 8 am, right? Whenever I took a Facebook break I was assaulted by the outrageous news of the day, and closer to home I have several friends and family members coping with serious health issues. ~sigh~

Even working until 7 pm feels late when I get home after dark!

Working and Working and Working Out

Just to be clear, I love my job. I get to work with brilliant scientists, learn about amazing technologies, and support very.important.projects. Working late from time to time is part of the deal, because there are legal deadlines that can’t be changed. As much as we try to plan ahead and get a head start, a last minute crush seems inevitable, but the hard work is worth it when it all comes together at the end. I’m also a bit of a workaholic and get a lot of satisfaction from a job well-done. 👩‍💼

And, it’s not always like this. My Outlook calendar for this coming week is blissfully empty. I don’t have any big deadlines. I will catch my breath, clean up my in-box, and start to worry about not having enough to do. 🤣🤣🤣

Working long hours at my desk didn’t keep me from working out—and actually made my workout time more important.

Sunday morning I finished my pledged miles for the Summit Stages challenge. I had to tack on a cool-down ride because it pulls the data from Peloton so I couldn’t just keep pedaling for a few minutes to round up.

After church I went to yoga at a different Corepower Yoga studio than usual. I liked the instructor, so now I have a good plan B when I can’t make it to my favorite class.

I charged up my headlamp and took Scooby running Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, covering 4+ miles each day.

Monday the weather was amazing with crisp fall air.

Wednesday it was a bit more humid, but there was still a nice breeze.

Friday it was warm and humid—it did not feel like the last Friday of September!

I made Scooby pose with the only Halloween decorations I’ve seen so far.

Thursday I accidentally did a stack of easier Peloton workouts—and it was just what I needed.

Robin’s class was cued at mostly “easy” pace, with just a 5 min power walk at the end. JJ’s core class had three rounds with 60 second planks, but included rest breaks in between. Selena’s class started with a 5 min warm-up and had 90 second breaks between rounds. With renegade rows, bicep curls, RDLs, and lunges, it was still a solid workout.

Saturday I was back on the mat with my favorite yoga instructor. For the next few weeks we will be working on eight angle pose. I struggle following the cues — this arm goes where? what do I do with this foot? — but I can get into the pose when I just do it.

Yes, I wore this outfit again.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

When will you put up Halloween decorations?

Don’t forget to join us for the ultimate coffee date on Friday —and tell me if your local Starbucks survived the massive closings—my office Starbucks did not. 😭😭😭

Burning the “midnight oil” at 9 pm absolutely counts when your day starts at 8!
I fully agree, workouts become even more essential when the work stress piles up.
Here’s hoping this coming week’s empty calendar brings you plenty of breathing room (and maybe more crisp fall runs).

Some houses near us have started putting up the Halloween decorations and I love it! We need to do it soon. The street next to ours goes all out for halloween. They even close their street and people come from all over to trick or treat there. Hopefully you can enjoy the less stressful week.

I feel you on the workload! We’re wrapping up the ‘busy’ season–summer in pediatrics is brutal! All the last minute physicals, and everyone comes in with a year of saved-up issues that I’m supposed to solve in 20 minutes. Plus, we are having a baby boom, so we’re trying to fit them in as well. But the rush is slowing down, and I actually had a few no-shows last week, which felt good. Like you, I always make time to get my workouts in! Everything falls into place after that!

  4. Way to get your workouts in on a busy work week. Sounds like the week ahead should be much more relaxed. Have a great one!

  5. Your last week sounds a bit like my upcoming one. My co-worker is out on vacay all week (and next Monday as well), so I’m holding down the fort mostly solo. Oh, did I mention, everyone in the company is getting new email addresses tomorrow…so my computer will be down for the first 90-ish minutes of the day. BUT, the day(s) will go faster as a result (right?), and I’m embracing the crash course I’ll get in office management and trouble-shooting (glass half full).

Well, I’m glad you feel so passionate and enjoy your job. That’s a big thing, and it makes those late nights more tolerable. Yes, 9 pm is late! I like to be in bed reading at 9.
Nice job on the workouts and Scooby runs! I have not seen a single Halloween decoration in my area- what is wrong with people??? Of course I haven’t put any up, either. My indoor decs go up on Wednesday.
Here’s to a more relaxing week ahead!

Oh wow, I bet you’re happy to have last week’s crazy work load behind you. Good job on getting those workouts in around your long work hours. I’m sure Scooby thanks you, too, for the three runs. 🙂

    Enjoy your less stressful week!

So far, I don’t know of any Starbucks that are closing. We don’t have too many around here, though, and we are also kind of a tourist town, which means chains do have a decent chance of survival.

9PM is absolutely the midnight oil. That’s got to be hard, and I’m glad it’s not all the time.

Scooby is, as you know, too cute.

The news is just ridiculous. Enough already.

  9. I haven’t heard of any Starbucks near me closing, but maybe they aren’t ones that I go to! Glad you will get a break from the heavy workload this week. 9pm is pretty late to me! I do keep odd hours for my job since my “other” job is as a contractor, self employed network admin. I do that work on nights and weekends or any time I fit it in.
I have had several friends with serious health issues lately. Very heavy stuff. It’s so sad. It’s been a tough year for a lot of people I know.
