Networking And Working Out In San Diego

Last week I attended my favorite annual conference—this time in San Diego. I went early to catch up with a client on Saturday, so I had some “me” time before I had to shift into networking mode.

Networking And Working Out In San Diego

By coincidence this conference was at the same hotel I stayed at for my last trip to San Diego, but this time I got to enjoy the amenities. I met a colleague from Australia for a glass of wine at the rooftop bar, enjoyed the opening reception on the 4th floor pool deck, and ate breakfast on a patio overlooking the water. Also, unlike my last visit, we were treated to blue skies for a few days before a “marine layer” of clouds moved in.

After much debate, I decided to make my Sunday morning activity a run to/through Balboa part. Since it was 1.5 miles from my hotel, I stayed on the “close” side of the park and did a loop that was half on the bridle trail and half on sidewalks, for a total of 7 miles.

I basically walked down the Juniper Staircase to get to the bridle trail

You can see how steep and uneven they are—
and how my glasses were already fogged up from humidity!

I did a few loops through the cactus garden.

I didn’t want to miss anything!

Not a cactus 😉

Monday morning was the conference fun run—a 5K along the Embarcadero.

By Tuesday my legs needed a break, so I did my Peloton strength class in the hotel gym and took a walk along the Embarcadero with my coffee.

Wednesday I had an early flight home, but did a 10 minute airport walk to keep on my Peloton daily streak—it was day 1900!

Thursday I had to get into the office early for a marathon day of back-to-back Teams meetings, so I just took Scooby for a walk before my stack of Peloton classes.

Friday I “slept in” until 5:30 and did my strength workout first so it would be light when I took Scooby about for a run. Hopefully that will work for a few weeks.

5.5 miles in my t-shirt from the fun run—with sweat marks 🤭

Saturday I took Scooby for a walk before heading to yoga. My favorite instructor is off the schedule for a few weeks, but I am trying to use up my classes before they expire. The class was fine, but not as amazing as I’m used to. When I got home, I was still wanting to do something more, so I braved Andy + Katie’s  new 2-for-1 tread bootcamp.

After that I was done!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

As far as know my next business trip isn’t until October, when I’ll have a double header to Chicago and Boston in the same week.

  1. So glad you had some extra time to yourself on this trip to explore and run and hand out with friends

I love San Diego. Looks like you made the most of your downtime!!

  3. Susanne says:

Wait, 1900 days in a row with Peloton?! That’s really cool.
Sounds like you had some good days away, and how nice with a conference fun run!
I would love to visit a cactus garden. On the way to town from where we stay in Italy there is a house with a cactus garden bed and I admire it so much! I’d love to have one but of course I can’t in our climate.

Looks like you really made the most of this conference trip! The Balboa Park run sounds fantastic (fogged-up glasses and all), and what a fun bonus to have a 5K built into the schedule.
Also, 1900 Peloton streak days?? That’s mind-blowing! Congrats on hitting that milestone in style.

  5. Jenny says:

This sounds fun! I mean- I’m sure there was plenty of work on your trip, but that run looks great, and it sounds like you had perfect weather.
Nice job on the Peloton streak- that’s some dedication!

  6. Jenn says:

So nice that you were able to take some time for your own enjoyment in San Diego! That makes business trips worth it for sure!

A 1900 day streak is incredible! You are crushing it! And I love that you are sticking with the yoga!

Chicago and Boston in one week? That’s going to be so fun and productive!

  7. Your 1900 streak is impressive! I realized, this morning, that I spaced-off dong a Peloton workout yesterday. I should have listened to an Outdoor run while doing my 7-miler, or a Meditation before bed…but, oops! Didn’t happen.

  8. Debbie says:

It sounds like you had a successful trip to San Diego! I love how when you travel for work you stay focused on your workouts, or at least as much as time allows.

  9. There was a 5K at your conference? Fun! Glad you were able to take advantage of the hotel amenities this time around. That looks like a scenic route through Balboa park. San Diego is a nice place to enjoy a quick getaway, even if it is for work 🙂

  10. Jessie says:

Love the pics from the Balboa park run! I haven’t spent that much time in San Diego, though I did run a marathon there way back when and really enjoyed the city. Well done making the most of your work trip!
