Fiercely Frigid February

We had a brief respite from frigid weather this week—while I was up in Boston—but we are back to a deep freeze with severe weather warnings. Now we have high winds and low temperatures. Brr!

I made it to the office once and was rewarded with this view!

Fiercely Frigid February

The D.C. area deserves its reputation for not being able to handle the snow. Schools were closed for more than a week after the January 31 storm, and even this week I encountered lanes on major roads that suddenly ended in a pile of snowcrete. Our weekend weather earned this dire warning from the National Weather Service:

Longest frigid weather streak in 30 years!

Needless to say, I’m staying inside, but it gets cold where I work in our basement. We keep our main level at 68F, but the basement is usually 1-2 degrees cooler. Once in a while it dips really low though! 🥶

62F!

Weekly Run Down

My quick trip to Boston didn’t impact my Peloton streak—I hit 2050 days in a row on Saturday—but without my daily walks with Scooby, my weekly minutes are on the decline. The hotel gym was really warm, so I focused on strength workouts after a short walk on treadmill to warm up.

Still at home on Sunday, I took a 45 min treadmill class to get in 5 miles, taking the “walk” breaks at an easy running pace.

Monday I had time for my usual workout before going to the airport. Hannah’s Reconnect Ride with all the UK instructors in-studio was a lot of fun.

Tuesday I did a long stack of short workouts in the hotel gym.

Wednesday I did a shorter stack and a shorter workout. 😉

Thursday I was back home and grateful to back to my basement gym—where I can regulate the temperature—and crack open the door for my treadmill runs.

Friday I braved CDE’s PowerZone Max class and it was tough.

It took me a while to figure out a cadence/resistance combination I could sustain in level 5, so I actually got better as the classed progressed.

Saturday the howling wind got me out of bed at 6 am. I warmed up with a few short classes before hopping on my treadmill for 5 miles. Matty’s class was good, but with weighted roll-ups, crunches, and sit-ups holding a 10 lb weight in one hand, it should not be labeled as a beginner class!

Peloton has a line-up of “Super Burn” classes for tomorrow—with a challenge to take the 45 min strength class and a 30 min cardio class—run, bike, or row.

It will take some scheduling, but I will try to earn that badge!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Do you get overheated when you workout?

no because I don’t work out. LOL
    and my runs? frozen!!
Good for you on getting all the workouts done. You rock.
I can’t stand this weather. -25 wind chill this AM.
Hope things warm up for you…
They will for me since I’m headed to Fla. Yay!

  2. Yes I get warm when I lift and I keep my gym at 62 degrees in the winter and 68 in the summer. This week has been brutal! I miss being outside daily and hope the big thaw comes soon. The neighborhood streets and parking areas are a real mess!

Oh, brr- 62 in the house is COLD! I know this because we’ve been turning on our lame-ass heat this past week when it gets down to 65.
This has been quite a winter for you so far! Great job keeping up your Peloton streak- that’s real dedication.
Ha- “overheated” is my middle name, especially for running. It’s been nice not to be roasting for a change this week- I did get too hot on my long run, but other than that the temps have been nice.

  4. Susanne says:

62 is quite chilly inside, we have something similar when it’s cold outside but it’s our choice to save oil (it’s quite expensive), we have electric heaters in our offices that we use when we need to. I’m so sorry about your continued freezing weather! Any forecasts about improvements soon?
    Good workout mix this week!

  5. Melissa says:

It has been so cold for us here, too! Single digits all last week and snow on and of f still. Such a wild winter here! Nice job with your workouts – what a dedicated streak!

  6. I do wear a tank top to Planet Fitness even in the winter, but I wear capris (instead of shorts in the summer). That’s so crazy about how cold the weather is where you are! Here in Colorado they are having record highs. Whomp whomp.

  7. You guys are getting Iowa winter weather! And, we’re getting yours (?), maybe? I don’t have a thermostat in the basement, but my main level is set at 70, which feels borderline chilly to me.

  8. Catrina says:

62°F in the basement would finish me off. That is not a “home gym,” that is cold storage! No wonder you’re layering up like it’s an expedition before workouts!

Staying inside sounds like the only sane plan. Good call sticking to the tread and Peloton. And 2050 days straight is fantastic, well done!

  9. Wendy says:

Congrats on that impressive Peloton streak. You are the picture of commitment and consistency! Yes, this cold weather streak has been ridiculous. It has me liking the treadmill, which isn’t a thing, really. We’re finally breaking out of the freezer starting today!!

  10. Jenn says:

I know you’ll get that badge!

You are rocking those Peloton streaks. I do hope things start warming up for you soon. I know it’s got to feel awful when it’s too cold and icy to go outside.

  11. Debbie says:

I hope you earned that Super Burn badge!

Our basement is usually about 6° colder than the main level because it has windows and doors across the entire back, but not a dedicated HVAC unit as it should. It’s often 62° when I go downstairs to workout in the winter mornings and I love it. Today the temperature was set at 71° in the hotel gym and it was awful.
