Sweating Through The Deep Freeze

If you saw my runfessions, you know we did get snow and sleet and freezing rain last weekend, creating what is aptly being called snowcrete.

The snowcrete is so solid Scooby doesn’t make pawprints!

Basically, whatever surfaces did not get cleared by Monday are buried under 6”-9” blocks of solid, frozen, iced-over snow that require heavy tools to break up—leave your shovel and grab a pick-axe. To top it off, we are officially in a deep freeze. Our high temperatures have been in the 20s, plummeting into single digits overnight, so it’s not melting anytime soon. 🥶

Sweating Through The Deep Freeze

Needless to say, I did all my workouts inside this week. I didn’t even walk Scooby—don’t worry, my husband took him out every afternoon when it warmed up into the 20s.

Sunday I finished the half-metric century miles I pledged for Pelofondo by finally taking Robin’s (Thanksgiving Day) Turkey Burn ride. Silly me, I thought it was going to be on the easy side!

I did the main strength workouts of the Peloton Strength for Skiers program M/W/F, pairing it with a 30 min tread class. Monday’s run with Camila was tough with several 2 minute intervals at 4% incline. I’m just getting back to running on incline, but have been maxing out at 3%.

The Strength for Skiers program doesn’t include many arm exercises, so I took arms-focused classes on T/Th/Sat. Tuesday’s highlight was Denis’s Reconnect Ride—a“class” he led during last weekend’s instructor summit they filmed and released on-demand.

For Wednesday’s tread class I chose an endurance run with Hannah F. It was a good low-ish intensity class. Most working blocks were cued at “moderate” pace with only a bit of incline at the end.

Thursday I braved both Matty’s strength class and Tunde’s “rolling hills” ride. I ended up liking both so much I bookmarked them to take again. I also bookmarked Robin’s class—lots of good pre-hab moves including weighted quadruped hamstring curls.

Friday’s run with Jess was tough but also bookmark-worthy as a tempo-style run, with two 5-min blocks at “challenging pace” and two 4-minute blocks at “hard” pace. I know I can hold those paces during a race, but they intimidate me on the treadmill!

Saturday I got up when my alarm went off at 6 am to get ready for Hannah F.’s 60-min live ride at 7:00. After tending to Scooby I had time for a few short classes before it started.

As usual, her programming and coaching were excellent, and I even enjoyed the playlist—I don’t usually choose EDM rides.

As if I haven’t had enough of a deep freeze at home, this week I am supposed to go to Boston for some meetings—although ironically the person who instigated this trip may get snowed in in Raleigh. 🤷‍♀️ I will be packing shorts and tank tops for the hotel gym—no running along the Charles River in this weather!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Ah, so there’s a name for it! Snowcrete sounds perfect.
Respect for how disciplined you stayed. Finishing Pelofondo, Strength for Skiers, tough incline runs, and those spicy Jess tempo blocks – great work.

Shame about no outdoor run in Boston but totally understandable that you’re using the hotel gym. I’d be on that treadmill too!

  2. Jenny says:

Wow, I’ve never heard of, or experienced snowcrete! I guess you’re just waiting for a thaw instead of getting out with your pickaxe.
Thank goodness for indoor options and Peloton! Sounds like you had a great week of workouts in spite of the frozen tundra.
Good luck with the trip to Boston! Yes, your coworker may have a little trouble getting out of Raleigh. Lots of crazy weather everywhere.

  3. Ah yes, snowcrete! My husband had quite the sore back from chipping all of ours out of the driveway. That’s a big task for sure and I appreciate that he did it! I hope your Boston trip goes well. It’s an overload of winter weather!
Where will you be skiing this year?

  4. Debbie says:

Whoever dubbed it snowcrete was a genius! It was a tough week for getting outside, that’s for sure! Safe travels to Boston!

  5. Snowcrete is exactly what it is and it’s not fun at all. Good job getting in all of your workouts. Being inside all the time is challenging for me too. I’m going to try that crazy Tunde magic mike class this week

  6. Wendy says:

I don’t think we’ve ever had snowcrete here, at least not that I can remember! We do get all three, but not like that! Of course, this winter is one for the books, so really, who knows what’s next? How about spring?

    Safe travels to Boston!

  7. Susanne says:

Wow, Coco, it really sounds serious over there. Ice on top of the snow is… bad. That slick surface Scooby is walking on is insane!
My neighbour’s brother lives in Boston and she had heard they’re expecting another snow storm! I hope you stay safe and warm. You had a good and varied indoor training week!

  8. Darlene S Cardillo says:

You are so disciplined with getting in all your workouts.

It is sooooo cold here but I have no choice but to go outside

  9. I also did Matty’s and Robin’s classes (which you took on Thursday), and thought both were good! I like 10-minute classes because that’s about all I have time for, so I try stacking them for variety. Snowcrete! That is an appropriate name for what you’re dealing with!

  10. The snowcrete is intense in Philly…I’ll never forget that name for it now. I am hoping that Monday begins the slow thaw for us…

I’ve done a couple of Hannah’s rides and they are great, she’s becoming one of my favorite instructors!

I’m so rusty on linkups – I missed runfessions but I need to make it to the coffee date this weekend!

  11. Jenn says:

Oh gosh! Safe travels! Snowcrete sounds awful and dangerous!

We haven’t had it quite that bad, although our big marathon/half marathon was this weekend and the race put out notices to ask people along the route not to let their sprinklers run overnight to help avoid icing. Yikes!
