Bracing For The Storm

By the time this goes live we’ll have more insight into just what the storm has in store for us. 12 hours out they are calling for 5”-9” snow followed by 1/4”-1/2” ice with temperatures staying in the 20s all week. 🥶

The Capital Weather Gang forecast

As usual, I live near the edge of a milder forecast (along the blue/light blue border) but we’ve stocked up and are ready to be stuck at home for a while—the Federal government already decided to close offices in the D.C. area on Monday

Bracing For The Storm

I had an unexpected storm of work this week too. My email blew up on Tuesday with clients sending instructions with Thursday or Friday deadlines. Even delegating most of the work, I still had to oversee everything and ended up working late every night. 🤪 I woke up Wednesday morning to another “URGENT” email and held by breath until I got to the bottom line—“We don’t want to rush you, but if you could send a draft by February 2 that would be appreciated.” Ah, the luxury of having almost 2 weeks instead of barely 2 days. 😃

Weekly Wrap

I decided to re-start the Peloton Strength for Skiers program, so my workouts had more structure. I could have re-read my post from last year where I broke down every class, but I decided to take it with a fresh perspective so I wouldn’t be biased against any classes I didn’t like the first time around. That said, I couldn’t bring myself to take the 15 or 20 minute stretch classes. I just don’t have patience for that! I enjoyed the 10 min warm-up, all three strength classes, and the 20 min mobility class. For the next few weeks, I think I’ll do the strength classes M/W/F and take the warm-up before any runs.

I did several solid cycling classes this week.

I started the week with Hannah’s latest “progressive push” class.

As the name suggests, the efforts gets harder with each block.

You can see my resistance trending upwards,
although it’s barely reflected in my output.

Thursday I did CDE’s latest sprint interval class.

This one had 10-second all out intervals.

Saturday I took a recent CVV 60-min endurance ride.

After a long warm-up, the program was 5 min Zone 3/2 min Zone 2.

In every other 5 min block we alternated minutes standing/seated. The output and speed spikes show I am still working on smooth transitions.

All my running was on the treadmill. I was hoping to take Scooby out Saturday morning, but this was the weather I woke up to. 😱

I decided I’d better head to the grocery store while there was still food on the shelves (there was plenty), so I let him run in the backyard while I wrote out my shopping list.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

What are your storm prep essentials? My husband thought to charge up all our cell phone battery banks in case we lose power.

“We don’t want to rush you, BUT…” Even 2 weeks is probably very short notice for quality work, uff. Hopefully things will get a bit easier for you as the year moves along.
That forecast looks nasty! Snow plus ice is a brutal combo, so closing offices sounds like the only sensible move.
Fingers crossed the power stays on and Scooby gets proper walks again soon!

Our Boston, New York, DC, Raleigh, Nashville, and Dallas offices were closed! The storm impacted a wide swath of the country.

I’m still working at home two days later.

  2. Sounds like you had some fresh workouts this week to keep you entertained. I’m motivated to get back to more biking this week since it looks like we are going to be trapped inside a lot. It drives me nuts that I get no step credit for cycling or lifting! I feel like you would get this frustration 🙂

  3. My plans to get strong for ski season have been sidelined by my caution for wrecking my knee! I really wanted to finish regular ski strength plan this season but I don’t think it’s in the cards.
We did get extra gas so we could use our generator if necessary… but since our fridge died I’m not sure what we would be powering. A heater I guess? Other than that we didn’t prep for any issues, so fingers crossed we don’t lose power or need some extra food!!
10 mins of stretching is my max for my patience level 😉

We’re in the middle of a big snowstorm here as well, the second in 2 weeks! It has been so cold and snowy the past few weeks. I’m so over it! Nice job getting in some good workouts this week. Hope you stay safe in the storm! I’m sure you’ll get it a few hours ahead of us.

    • Coco says:

Oh, gosh, I hope your power stayed on and you have a working fridge by now!

Peloton has a few “runner’s knee” pre-hab classes that target surrounding muscles with stationary split squats, bridges, etc. We all know those moves!

  4. I am probably totally jinxing my situation, but it’s just crazy how most of Iowa missed the snow and ice that’s hitting so many other places. Mind you, we’ve had the extreme cold and wind, though. Momma N is really having attitude! Nice job with all those indoor miles (and workouts)!

  5. Susanne says:

Whoa, I’ve been thinking of all you people when I’ve read about the storm. It sounds quite severe. I hope you stay warm and have enough of everything until you can get out again.
Here I’d freak out for a snow storm because our house isn’t built to keep the cold out. We’ve added insulation and done a few other bits but it still gets very cold in here even with a few degrees below freezing. Firewood and coal would be our main thing to stuck up besides food and water! And yes, having all gadgets charged, and power banks.
    Stay safe!

    • Coco says:

Oh gosh, I saw a man buying bundles of firewood at the grocery store — that’s got to be the most expensive place to buy them.

Our house is mostly toasty but the basement where I work is always freezing.

  6. Debbie says:

Like your husband, I also charged our battery chargers in case the power goes out. Fingers crossed that the power stays on – I’m praying that the sleet doesn’t change over to freezing rain. It turned over from snow to sleet about three hours earlier than expected out here.

Here’s hoping your clients don’t start sending you even more things to do with immediate turnarounds!

  8. Wendy says:

Oh gosh, it was 8F this morning, and since it was above zero, I laced up and went for a run! It’s all about perspective, right? Now I’m not saying it was warm, but it was warmer than we’ve been… Stay safe, and fingers crossed for the forecast being wrong.

  9. Jenny says:

Ooh, a snow day! It sounds fun (since you don’t have to go out in it). Seems crazy that everyone is talking about the snow and cold, and it was 83 degrees here today- I was way too hot on my run!
Sounds like you had a good week. And, your storm prep reminds me of what we do when a hurricane is coming, except we’re always worried about losing power. I guess it would REALLY suck if you lost power! Hoping you’re hunkering down inside and it’s warm and cozy.

  10. Darlene S Cardillo says:

Every WRD has the same theme. At least you can stay indoors and work out. Kudos to you on your discipline

We got a lot of snow and I am just sitting home and reading…

Looking ahead, the temps look just as cold or colder than last week… Boo.

  11. It really has been a stormy week in a lot of ways. Those deadlines would drive me nuts!

Nice job with your workouts! With my current training plan I haven’t been able to make any time to use the Peloton bike – I only have access to the bike at my work gym. I do miss the challenge though!

  12. Jenn says:

When it rains, it pours? Or in this case, when it snows…

I hope you stay warm and safe. I’m glad you were able to get food. And I hope you get through your work smoothly. Hang in there!
