Before Chase Tucker announced his recent departure from Peloton, the Breakthrough Crew Facebook group had started a month long challenge focused on his classes. His departure didn’t deter us, and we ended March with a grand finale of sorts—taking his “One Hundred Reps” classes where he tricks you into doing 100 reps of a given exercise.
Well, he tried to be sneaky about it in the first few classes he did, but in later classes he warns that we will be “hunting hundreds” (or “hunting hundos” when he was being silly).
Hunting One Hundred Reps
I had knowingly done the one hundred reps squat class before. Although it didn’t end up being too bad, I hadn’t tried any others—and had purposefully avoided any class that might be the one hundred push-ups class. I knew the Breakthrough Crew challenge was my now-or-never chance to get it done, so I made it my first one hundred class of the week.
All the classes have the same general format: 2-ish minute warm-up, followed by a long set with the hundred reps, followed by a shorter set of different exercises. The long set is divided into 5 rounds of 4 exercises, two of which are a variation of the 100 reps exercise, so you knock out 100 reps 10 at a time. In the 100 deadlift class we did an EMOM variation:
- minute A: 10 deadlifts + squat hold for the rest of the minute
- minute B: 10 sumo deadlifts + goblet squats for the rest of the minute
- 30 seconds rest
Chase is so encouraging and makes you feel like he’s proud of you for getting them all done. (Yes, even in a pre-recorded class taken months later—that is the magic of Peloton!) In the push-up class, he encourages you to get in 10 push-ups each round, no matter what it takes—dropping to your knees, taking a break, etc. He really wants everyone to feel the sense of accomplishment of getting in those one hundred reps!
Doing the exercises in sets of 10 paired with a different exercise really made the seemingly impossible very doable. I surprised myself by being able to do all hundred push-ups on my toes, and was surprised—but not defeated—when I had to switch to lighter weights for the last set of the shoulder press class.
Weekly Run Down
I’m glad I had a strength challenge to focus on this week, because I rolled my foot walking Scooby Tuesday morning (not his fault, I slipped on tree debris on the sidewalk) and it took a few days to get better.
Monday: 100 Push-Ups + 20 min Ride + Core
I knew I had to do the 100 push-up class before I chickened out, so I took it as my first class of the week. I thought the arms and shoulders class would be push-up free, but it had some pike push-ups (sort of like dolphin push-ups) that at least used different muscles.
Tuesday: 200 Squats + 10 min Yoga + 20 min Tread
Two things to explain about Tuesday’s workouts. First, I didn’t realize the 15 min Glutes and Legs class was another hundred squats class. Second, yes, I did that tread run after I hurt my foot, but I have brand new treadmill what do you expect? I hadn’t realized how hurt it was at the time.
Wednesday: 100 Shoulder Presses + Core + 30 min Intervals + Arms Ride
I had been skimping on core so far this week, so I made up for it with a 20 min core class. I thought my foot would be OK with a ride, but in retrospect it wasn’t the best idea. I also didn’t expect Hannah to have so many shoulder presses in her class—at least I was only using 3lb weights!
Thursday: 100 Deadlifts + 10 min Core + 15 min Bodyweight
My foot was recovered enough to take Scooby for a short, slow walk, but I skipped all cardio because it still was uncomfortable to walk on. The 100 deadlifts class wasn’t too bad. The bodyweight class was probably an example of why some people don’t like his classes—it had creative moves I wasn’t sure I was doing correctly—but I took Chase’s advice to just have fun with it.
Settling into a squat hold.
Friday: 100 side raises + Upper Body Strength + Core
This class was listed as a 100 flies class, but it really had 100 (kneeling) side raises. The alternating exercises were chest presses and chest flies, so there were 50 each of those. 😉
Saturday: Core + 5.75 Treadmill Miles
The way my recovery was going, I thought my foot would be better by today, and it mostly was. I tested it out walking Scooby, and then opted for the treadmill just in case it didn’t go well. It’s still a bit achy along the outside side, but not in a way that felt worse with running.
Sunday: Core + 6.0 Scooby Miles
Since my foot held up after Saturday’s run—and walking around Georgetown with Cari!—I opted for some Scooby miles to enjoy our great spring weather.
I can’t wait to hear how Cherry Blossom went for Deborah and Cari!
I helped out with pre-race fueling yesterday. 😉
A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.
Which 100 reps class would intimidate you the most?
100 anything. I’m using some machines at the gym… 15 reps is what I do LOL.
Great week as usual. I am always in awe when I read what you can do,
So fun to brunch with Cari and Deborah. Someday I need to run in DC.
So just do 7 sets of them and you’ll do more than 100!
You DO need to run in DC!
Yes. I agree. DC is in my bucket list.
I’ll start with one rep. Lol
Well first of all, I’m glad your foot is okay! I think I know that pain- not the pain I have now, but the pain on the outside from rolling your foot. It does heal up pretty quickly.
I love the 100 theme for your week! It sounds like a weird combination of grueling and fun.
Glad you were able to help Cari and Deborah out with pre-race fueling, ha ha. I’m also excited to hear how their race went!
I’m great at helping friends out with pre-race fueling. 😉
I’m sorry about the foot but it sounds like it’s healing up quickly so that good. You got that treadmill just in time!
We had one nice almost Spring day yesterday, today it’s back to almost Winter — but hey, that’s the game, right?
So much fun to see you all together!
I need to revisit that Chase 100 Challenge (I may have chickened out, LOL, when you shared it). I should have counted how many lunges & squats Daniel had me doing Thursday… holy ouch! I’m STILL feeling those (but I’m able to sit/stand without wincing now).
Knowing you, you will think they’re easy.
Yikes! I’m glad your foot is ok! Way to go on all the 100s. I had no clue Chase was leaving Peloton. My bad. How fun to help the fueling efforts of our CB runners! What a fun meetup!
Chase does make the 100’s go by fast and fun. Nice job on those! So great to see you yesterday
Yesterday was so fun!
I’m not sure how I feel about 100 pushups but we have done similar rep schemes at CrossFit. Brutal.
I guess I didn’t realize you weren’t running Cherry Blossom, but how fun to meet up with Cari and Deborah!
The 100 challenge sounds intense! I just bookmarked the pushups, that one appeals to me the most (and sounds the hardest!)
Glad the foot held up for a 6 mile scooby run!
I really hope your foot is feeling better!
That Chase challenge sounds like a good one. I haven’t been very active in the Breakthrough Crew group so I completely missed it.
How fun to spend time with Cari & Deborah 🙂
This reminds me of my pre-pandemic Bodypump classes. It’s only after a particular session that the instruction would say “and, by the way, that was 120 squats” or something like that. I wouldn’t have liked to know that in advance! 🙂
Lovely photo with you and Deborah and Cari!
Love the photo with you, Deborah and Cari!
Wow, those 100 rep classes sound intense! I think the classes with 100 squats would leave me in a world of hurt, lol.
Such a bummer about your foot but glad to hear that it seems to be getting better every day.
100 reps of anything would be intense!! You are amazing. Hope the foot is feeling better.
Oh no on the foot! I hope it’s improved now. Well done all of the 100’s this week (and the 200 also!!). Phew!
I hope by the time you read this message your foot is all healed!! What an incredible week of 100s!! You are my hero!
