Coronavirus Conundrum

Remember when I said 2022 was off to a better start than 2021? Well it is, but I started the year in a coronavirus conundrum.

Who would have thought this image still would be relevant two years later?

Coronavirus Conundrum

We were pretty cautious over the holidays. We only gathered with family, and everyone was fully vaccinated. We all wore masks the few times we went out to eat—and even kept them on in the Escape Room we had to ourselves. My son and his wife went to Germany for Christmas, but stayed with family friends, did mostly outdoor activities (like the Christmas markets), and took home covid tests almost every day. To satisfy the testing requirements to come home, they went to the airport a day early, got a covid test there, and stayed at an airport hotel. Sheesh!

Home Covid Antigen Test

The new souvenir from Europe?
They are much cheaper (~1 Euro) and easier to find over there.

We picked them up from the airport and they spent the night so they could spend some time with my daughter. They went home the next day, my daughter went home the next day, and I got my covid vaccine booster after dropping her at the airport.

image of novel coronavirus from NIAIDI had a headache the next day, and a headache and tinge of a sore throat the next day (NYE), but assumed it was from my booster until I learned that one of the family members I had been with tested positive by a PCR test on NYE—after testing negative by a home test the day before. Thanks to Jenny for sharing her experience, I knew a headache and sore throat were current covid symptoms. New Year’s morning I spent an hour figuring out how to get a PCR test, and booked the earliest available free appointment I could find—for Thursday. I probably could have gotten tested sooner if I wanted to pay $$$ out of pocket, but I begged off of a volunteer activity and self-isolated for the rest of the week.

My throat felt mostly better by Monday, but my headache came and went all week. I never had any respiratory symptoms. Although my nose might have been running more than usual, I never had to keep a box of tissues by my side.

Negative Coronavirus Test ResultsSince I couldn’t get a test until a week after my symptoms started, I wasn’t surprised it was negative. But what did that result mean? That I didn’t have covid, or that it wasn’t detectable in my my nasal sample anymore? That’s my coronavirus conundrum.

Based on the timing of my known exposure and symptoms, I think I had it, but I wish I knew. My experience also drives home how much published infection rate data underestimates actual infection rates. My results will go in the books as negative, even if I would have tested positive if I could have gotten an appointment earlier. And then there’s my husband, who didn’t even bother getting tested because he also only had mild symptoms and could just stay home.

The other news of the week was our snow storm. I didn’t believe the forecast when I wore shorts for my bike ride on Sunday, but 24 hours later we had 10” of snow!

Scooby in the snow Jan 2022Scooby and I surveyed the tree damage on Tuesday afternoon.
The heavy, wet snow took down so many huge limbs!

Weekly Wrap

If I did have covid, I credit my fully vaccinated status for keeping my symptoms mild. I had to take an Alleve in the morning, but I didn’t feel run down or miss a workout. I did modify my routine because of all the snow, but I swapped out Scooby miles for treadmill workouts. I also am participating in several Peloton challenges—one involves doing Hannah Frankson’s 15 minHIIT rides 3 x/week, and another involves taking certain badge-earning classes.

Monday: Lower Body Strength + HIIT Ride
It was barely snowing when I got up, so I took Scooby for a walk before I tackled a long stack of Peloton workouts. I like starting the week with lower body strength. Then I sandwiched the HIIT ride between warm-up and cool-down rides, and took a German-language stretch class to earn a badge.

Peloton Workouts

Tuesday: Upper Body Strength + 5.0 Treadmill miles
First treadmill run of the week. I LOVED Jess Sims’ class—the playlist was the top 10 songs on Peloton from 2021 and definitely worth taking again. I took Matt Wilpers’ Spotify Indigo class to earn a badge—maybe Cari would like the country playlist.

Wednesday: 10 min core + 10 min Pilates + 15 min HIIT ride
I was ready for a break from strength, but took a short Pilates class to warm up before I hopped on my bike.

Peloton Workouts

Thursday: 15 min core + 5.0 Treadmill Miles
My headache was fierce, but I did a 15 min core class for an Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month badge until the Alleve kicked in, and then felt good during a 45 min interval run on the treadmill.

Peloton workouts

I love running with Scooby, but have missed the intensity of interval runs.

Friday: Pilates + HIIT ride + Hills ride + Upper Body Strength
I started with a Pilates class to warm up—and earn another badge—and then stacked a HIIT and Hill ride. The HIIT ride was HARD—twenty-one intervals of 15 sec on/15 sec off with no recovery beyond those 15 seconds. I really liked the Hill ride. Jenn Sherman is tough, but I can take her hill classes. 😉

Peloton workouts

Saturday:  7.5 Treadmill miles + 20 min stretch
The hardest part of this workout was planning it. Could I really do 7 miles on the treadmill? I figured Andy Speer and Daniel McKenna could get me through it, and these classes had great playlists and just enough intervals to keep me from getting bored without getting burned out.

Treadmill selfie

Hannah Corbin’s new barre class was a good glute-activating warm-up—
prone leg lifts are sneaky!

Sunday: 5.5 Treadmill Miles
I had planned to do 10 min Core + 15 min Flash 15 + 30 min Tread before church, but took my time getting out of bed, so I did the first two classes before church, and then headed back to my basement gym later to do my 30 min Tread class as a warm-up to the 45 min Tread Bootcamp I decided to join since a friend was reaching a milestone. 🥵

Is it hard to get a covid test where you are?
Would you get tested if you only had mild symptoms?

  1. Our library system provides at home tests, and they passed out 1,700 of them in just a few hours last week. Crazy!! We did end up spending $23 for a set of two tests. I’m so torn with the tests. I mean, it’s great that you know you are positive, but for those who are negative, what about tomorrow? Still negative? There just aren’t enough tests for all of that. But I guess we are doing are best. Simple as nose picking. That’s the best!!!! Hope you are feeling 100% soon!

I agree. It’s the best we have — if you can find it — but it’s not very good.

You know that’s not U.S. packaging with a slogan like that!

  2. therightfits says:

It’s difficult to navigate it all. It sounds like you probably did have a mild case as well as your husband based on the symptoms and confirmed exposure, but the vaccines + booster did their job. Ugh, it’s so tough! Glad that is behind you now and I guess you have ‘super immunity’ if you did have it!

  3. deborahbrooks14 says:

as you know we had our own covid issues over here this week. I am still assuming I never had it and not going to waste a home test on myself if I don’t have symptoms. Way to get it done on the TM this week! Nice variety of classes

  4. Well, as you know, I haven’t been feeling great this week. Jan 2021 — also didn’t feel great. By the time I did test, I was negative. So far I haven’t tested here because I don’t really have the symptoms, haven’t been going out, and yes, it’s hard to get a test — plus the weather is frightful!

Although we do not have your snow. I’m glad your symptoms were mild enough that you were able to keep up with your workouts. Although mine are mild (no sore throat), I definitely do feel run down.

Anyhoo might do an at home test (we have a few) in case i make up my mind to visit my mom. I haven’t decided yet. I definitely should, it’s been a while, but I’m still very tired and that’s not gonna help.

Let’s hope you got that out of the way for 2022 & it will be smooth sailing from here!

  5. Wendy says:

The good news is that if the PCR didn’t detect the virus in your nasal swab, you couldn’t spread the virus, even if you had it. So thank your lucky stars and hooray for the vaccine!!! I’m exposed every day at work, but I wear my N95 and wash my hands always. I sure hope I don’t get it.

    • Coco says:

Exact;y! I was glad to get that news Friday night and resume my normal activities this weekend — mostly grocery shopping!

  6. kookyrunner says:

Even with trying to do everything right, this virus is so unpredictable. I am glad that your symptoms were mild and that you’re feeling better now. Thank goodness for the vaccine and booster!

You had a lot of great Peloton classes this week. I mentioned in my post that I forgot how much I enjoy Daniel’s classes – he’s great!

  7. jenny says:

It really does sound like you had Covid (did you read Lisa’s rundown from this week?) You did way better with it than I did- all those workouts! I didn’t do anything for four days. Of course I didn’t have the booster (my bad) so who knows if that would have made a difference. Anyway, glad you’re feeling better. And yes… it’s so hard to get a test, if someone just had mild symptoms they probably wouldn’t bother. Imagine how many people have had it that we don’t know about!

    • Coco says:

I’m sure I didn’t feel as bad as you did. My sore throat was mild. I don’t think my booster helped me (because of the timing) but hopefully it will help against the next variant. :-O

  8. Marcia says:

Oh wow, who even knows anymore. It’s all so difficult. Tests are hard to come by here, although the Caveman stocked up on a few just in case. I feel like the cases are closing in on all of us.

    • Coco says:

Yeah, Omicron seem to be everywhere. At least with the vaccine the symptoms are usually mild. Now that I know how to get a PCR test as a walk-in, I’m ready for the next time I hope never comes!

  9. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

Dang, you had a busy Peloton week! I’m really missing all those cycling classes…I’m going to do some HIIT rides immediately upon my return to my basement, LOL. Great week, Coco!

  10. Darlene says:

I guess it doesn’t matter if you had it or not because you didn’t end up in ICU. Thanks to the vaccine.

    Glad you feel like better.

So far so good here. Fingers crossed it stays that way. I do need to get some rapid tests just in case.

    • Coco says:

Yeah, if it weren’t for the pandemic and concern for others, I wouldn’t have stayed home — I wasn’t coughing or anything like that, And, because everyone in my family was vaccinated the exposure was more of an inconvenience than the serious health concern it would have been a year ago. Not that I recommend it!

  11. Cari says:

Off to preload that run right now. You know your country audience
Had to giggle at the “Simple as nose-picking” tagline.
Glad you were mildly ill, whatever the cooties were. I hate to think of what our true positive rates are.

  12. The whole Covid thing continues to be mind-boggling. Who knows any more?! I’m glad your symptoms were mild. Thank goodness for the vax and booster!

    Awesome week of Peloton stacks!!

  13. Catrina says:

Exactly, Coco! The actual infection rates are much, much higher.
Here in South Africa, it’s mind-boggling. Everyone I know has had the “flu”. They don’t even bother with getting a test. A quarantine is often a luxury people can’t afford here.
But as long as the symptoms are mild, I guess it’s less of a worry.

I love that you didn’t miss a workout! Well done!

  14. runswithpugs says:

I’m sorry you went through that and I’m glad you’re feeling better. My anxiety is unable to cope with the back and forth and what ifs and buts. I’m just a mess.

Where I live, I *think* we are ok on tests. We have a close testing facility that has rapid tests in the morning, but you can still get at-home tests from the pharmacies. That being said, our leadership did let all of that stockpile of tests expire, so…. Florida is big though, and I know other areas are struggling. It’s just a mess.
