If I Knew Then What I Know Now

We are nearly halfway through 2020, and I sure hope 2020 is more than halfway through whatever it has planned for us. Covid-19. Murder hornets. Sarahan dust cloud. Enough already! After spending 1/4 of the year taking pandemic precautions, I am thinking back on what I would have done (or not done) if I knew then what I know now.image of novel coronavirus from NIAID

Don’t regret missing the July Ultimate Coffee Date. Deborah and I will open the (link-up) doors Friday, and keep the coffee brewing all weekend.

If I Knew Then What I Know Now

If I knew all business trips and conferences were going to be canceled, I wouldn’t have spent so much time getting an American Airlines branded credit card that would give me priority boarding and free checked bags, and I certainly wouldn’t have paid an annual fee for those benefits. By the time my free companion ticket arrived in the mail in late March I already was wondering if I’d ever use it. Womp, womp.

Will I even see a view like this in 2020?

If I knew I’d be staying home nearly 24/7 for the foreseeable future, I wouldn’t have turned down my friend’s ski weekend invitation because, after spending December and January burning the midnight oil for work I really just wanted to relax at home and spend time with my husband.
Be careful what you wish for? 😉

If I knew a stealthy and deadly virus was going to spread across the nation, I wouldn’t have bought a 30-class OTF package before my current package had run out, and I wouldn’t have signed up for another 6 months of Cyclebar classes. In my imaginary coronavirus balance sheet, I am counting these costs as Covid-19 expenses charged against the savings from not paying for parking at work.

OTF Activity Data

I’m surprised the app still knows who I am.

It’s not all regrets though. I’m grateful my daughter came for a long visit after Christmas, because who knows when we’ll be ready to fly out to see her. It’s good I went to the dentist in January because I’m pretty sure I’m not going to keep my next appointment in July. I’m glad I got new glasses before my ophthalmologist’s office closed, because I was really struggling to read on my computer and working at home has forced me to work “paperless”. For a while I was glad I’d gotten my hair cut shortly before the shutdown, but it’s back to a drastic situation now.

Weekly Run Down

Just like the last fifteen weeks, this week’s workouts were a mix of Scooby Miles and Peloton workouts. In the before times, my workout schedule was dictated by when my favorite instructors were teaching at Orangetheory, Cyclebar and Corepower Yoga. Now that I don’t have that structure, I find myself wasting time trying to decide what to do for my workout. It’s nice to have flexibility based on the weather and how I feel, but I’d feel better if I had some sort of plan. So far I haven’t had the discipline to impose one on myself though.

Monday:  30 min Peloton Treadmill + 40 min Peloton Strength Workouts
I planned to do 30 min treadmill + 30 min strength, forgetting to account for the 4 week core program I’ve been doing. Up until now (week 3) they’d been 5 min workouts, so I was surprised to see a 10 min workout on the schedule. Of course, working from home I couldn’t say I didn’t have time to do it ….

Peloton WorkoutsI used Jess’s workout as a warm-up for Chase’s run.

Tuesday: 5.45 Scooby Miles + two 10 min Peloton Core Workouts
I did the scheduled core workout after my run. When I had 15 minutes to kill before a conference call, I tried the 10 min core workout from the new Dolly Parton collection. It was a tough workout–thank goodness I had the music to distract me.

My foggy glasses and Scooby’s tongue tell you it was a humid run.

Wednesday: 40 min Peloton Strength Workouts

Peloton WorkoutsThursday: 5.45 Scooby Miles + 10 min Peloton core workout

Friday:  35 min Peloton Strength Workouts
My body was telling me it was time for an easier day. I was skeptical of a 15 min core workout, but it was Pilates-based, so not too bad–although I did have to take a few breaks.

Peloton Workouts
Saturday: 6.25 Scooby Miles + 2 Peloton Treadmill Miles
It was already in the 70s when I headed out at 6:30, so I knew I wouldn’t be running 8 miles with Scooby. I didn’t even plan on going 6 with him, but he wasn’t panting more or taking more breaks than usual, so I think he was OK.

When my podcast ended halfway into our route, I chose a 30 min Peloton Outdoor Run to get me home. Then I grabbed a fresh water bottle and hopped on the treadmill for two more miles doing a 20 min Peloton Treadmill Run.

Peloton Workouts

Sunday: 30 mile bike ride
It was pretty warm and humid, but you really do make your own breeze on the bike, so this ride was pretty pleasant.

Thanks to Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down link up. It’s always great for motivation and encouragement, but now it’s especially important for distance socializing. We may be physically apart, but we are in this together!

Is there anything you would have done differently if you knew then?

Are you following some sort of workout schedule?

It’s funny you mention a workout schedule because I’ve been winging it and also decided I needed more structure. I’m beyond grateful to have finished the WMMs in London last year. I really believe in seizing opportunities when they present themselves because you never know it you’ll ever get another chance. This pandemic is a testament to that.

  2. kookyrunner says:

Do you think that American Airlines might be a little flexible with the deadlines to use certain things? I hope that they will be able to work with people so that you can still use your perks.

I also can’t believe that we’re halfway through 2020, but I really hope that the second half of the year flies by and is a little more “normal” – whatever that means!

Now that I’m back to OTF a few days a week, I’m going to start mapping out my workouts for the week because I still fully intend to keep doing Peloton workouts and running.

    • Coco says:

I think they probably think they are being flexible enough. The thing with American is that I really only use them for business trips to FL or TX, so it depends if those start again.

  3. Wendy says:

You and me both. I kept thinking how nice it would be to have some time at home. After 6 weeks, I was climbing the walls! LOL. I am following a training schedule for my 50k–but we’ll see if that happens.

    • Coco says:

Gosh, I’d be getting more confident about your 50K with more things opening up. That training might not leave much time for much else.

  4. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

Oh gosh…after my hot and sweaty 2-mile recovery run, I was freezing on the bike ride this morning LOL It’s crazy how much cooler you feel on the bike. I love how you’re squeezing in 10-minute workouts in between meetings and calls 😉

  5. Yes I used to complain about my husband traveling so much. Well we sure have had lots of time together this year! These last few months sure have me rethinking some of my priorities for sure. The 10 min Peloton classes are the best and pretty challenging for 10 min. Thanks for linking and have a great week! See you for coffee 🙂

  6. I love your take on what you wish you’d know.

I’ve been winging my workouts too – I’m starting to think I need a plan.

  7. Chaitali says:

Sounds like a good week! I think I would have pulled the trigger on the peloton bike earlier if I had know about all this. We hadn’t loved our gym since January anyway but I wanted time to research options. Oh well, we should have it in about 4 weeks I think.

    • Coco says:

I’ve heard of people getting it early if they called to check on it … just saying! I am keeping my fingers crossed and knocking on wood that my treadmill holds out for a while longer!

P.S. Disquis won’t let me comment on your site again. I’ll keep trying!

      • Chaitali says:

Good to know about the peloton! I’ll give it a try :). And thanks for letting me know about discus. I don’t know what’s up with it.

  8. runswithpugs says:

You know I love me some Scooby miles.

It’s funny – I keep thinking that if we knew the world was going to shut down, my last “normal, out” meal would NOT have been at the place we went to LOL. We could have done so much better! At the time, I was so proud to be out and about and almost feeling normal, but then WOMP. Down came the restrictions.

  9. I am used to making up my own workout schedule, LOL! I guess that’s a plus.

We went to get our precheck for TSA at the end of last year. It’s good for like 5 years, I think, but right now it seems like a waste of money. But who knew?

Unfortunately my dentist appt was literally right around when my Dad passed, and it didn’t happen for obvious reasons. I haven’t yet made a new appt but I should. And I actually had had a couple of haircuts back to back before all this exploded — so unlike me — but of course could really use one now.

  10. Renée says:

this is going to sound bad, and it was such a hard decision for me to make, even though I new deep down it was the RIGHT decision, but, if I knew last year that I wasn’t going to get the chance to run Chicago again for the foreseeable future, I would not have deferred my entry last year. No way I could have run the marathon last year though after 8 weeks of training and 3 weeks in pain and 5 weeks just trying to get walking miles in. But yeah.

you had a good week though. but don’t even suggest that “pilates based” core work is somehow easy hahahaha! pilates is HARD!

can we agree that when we CAN travel I still meet up with you in Copenhagen?

    • Coco says:

So you would have hobbled your way through the course?! I understand that thinking, but who knows how much damage you could have done and at least you are pretty healthy and able exercise now. <3

I definitely am looking forward to meeting up with you in CPH!

  11. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn’t have bought tickets to go to Mexico. I do have a credit from Travelocity but I would rather have a credit on my credit card or a check from them.

I am working with a coach and do what he tells me to do. 🙂 It is going very well and I am excited to see how I do this month.

  12. Lisa says:

I really would have gotten a haircut and gone to the dentist before all of this started if I knew what was going to happen! My dentist appointment was scheduled for late March, so they cancelled it. I haven’t felt ready to reschedule even though at this point I probably could. But that whole no child care thing is kind of an issue too.

  13. This post got me thinking!! I think I would have gone work clothes shopping. In January I said I really needed to get more office wear but I kept postponing it. Luckily I could work from home when we had the lockdown but now that we are back at the office, I have little to wear and we’re not allowed to try on clothes at the shops which I usually like doing. So I’ll have to wait for a bit!

  14. Twyla A Luke says:

As a dental care professional please remember how important your oral health care is to your total health! If you are concerned call your office and see what precautions they are taking. Please also remember that dental offices have always been at risk for respiratory and also many more deadly transmissable diseases and we are very adapt at sanitation and protection. There is going to be a dental crisis to some extent of people who cancel appointments and/or delay them due to fear ect. As we know, most people don’t like the dentist and the current environment adds to it. Already, most offices are very behind on backlog of those who were cancelled while offices were closed! If patients are high risk we encourage beginning of day appointments to limit exposure! Take care and brush and floss! 🙂

  15. Cari says:

I love that plane view shot. Our chat about the AA card seems like years ago!
I actually did add in a CV19 line in my budget software. Desk chair, new lamp, vacuum (home longer, make more messes) and increased coffee purchasing are totally covid. Yes, off setting work lunch spending.
