Yellowstone Vacation Talk
If we were having coffee, I would have to tell you about our recent vacation in Yellowstone National Park. I’d give you a quick recap of our hikes like I did here and tell you all about the bison, like I did here.
If we were having coffee, I would confirm that yes, I did survive for five days without Starbucks, but these sunrise views at Yellowstone Lake were worth the sacrifice.
If we were having coffee, I would want to tell you about Isa Lake, which straddles the Great Continental Divide in Yellowstone National Park.
Rivers west of the Great Continental Divide drain into the Pacific Ocean.
Rivers east of the Great Continental Divide drain into the Atlantic Ocean.
Isa Lake is the only natural lake in the world that drains into two oceans. Not only that, but because the of how the lake is oriented relative to a bend in the Divide, it does so in reverse. The west end of the lake eventually drains into the Atlantic, while the east end of the lake eventually drains into the Pacific.
Don’t let those pretty lilly pads fool you–
we spotted a leech in these tranquil waters.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you about the elk that liked to graze on the hill behind the cabins at Mammoth Hot Springs.
These porches were the perfect place to read and relax at the end of the day.
Clearly the elk weren’t afraid of people!
Tell me about your vacation!

I’m not sure I would know a leach if I saw one! Loved all of your vacation pics. Looks just beautiful out there. 5 days of no Starbucks!? Wow
Hard to believe, I know, but their coffee wasn’t too bad.
Beautiful… i agree, that sunrise view is worth the sacrifice.
So glad you had such a great vacation! That sunrise view was definitely worth the Starbucks sacrifice 😉
It really was – Happy Birthday! 🙂
Looks lovely! What a sunrise.
It was so pretty! There’s something about a lake …
We took our boys to Yellowstone when they were younger and had a blast. Stayed at Mammoth Hot Springs too, but in the hotel, not the cabins. Your sunrise picture is beautiful!
The lodging was part of our tour. We all got the same cabins at the start and end of our week, and it was nice at the end when we all knew each other, and sat on the porches chatting.
I’m impressed with your five days of no Starbucks! Beautiful pictures. I hope to get out there one day. Thanks for coffee!
I told our guide that my friends would be impressed — and that it was worth the sacrifice. 😉
Yellowstone is so pretty–I really hope I’ll get to go visit someday! I haven’t seen a sunrise in a while!
You would really love it — there’s so much to see and do and being awed by.
So many beautiful pics! Those sunrises are amazing!!!
Thanks. You all would love it!
Beautiful! I’d love to get out there – maybe next year. This year’s trip to Australia and New Zealand took a huge chunk of our vacation budget LOL.
But what a great vacation it was!
That is a long time without Starbucks. LOL looks like a great vacation though
Your sunrise pics are amazing! It looks like you had a really fun time in Yellowstone!
Thanks for the linkup!
It really could not have been better.
I really want to go to Yellowstone! Thank you for sharing!!
Did you bring a stash of instant Starbucks? I’ve been enjoying Alpine Start and Kuju Coffee (instant pourovers) – have you tried these??
Hah! I brught K-cups to the Grand Canyon because they said there would be Keurigs in the room (and there were), but this time I relied on Xantarra (the food vendor for all national parks).. There was a mini-Starbucks at Lake Lodge, but we were there at lunch time and I didn’t need any more caffeine. 😉
That sunrise picture is gorgeous! Too funny re: Starbucks, I just spent way too much time googling to see if there was one near this week’s trip. Alas, no. Even though I was hoping it would be somewhere I could reward myself with a run to
Was so excited to see Continental Divide when in Colorado or New Mexico a few years ago, I was still bummed to have missed it due to poor shoes when in Banff.
We stayed in Jackson Hole while we were there but saw those cabins at Mammoth Hot Springs and thought they’d be a great place to stay. There’s always next time, right? Sounds like you guys really had a wonderful trip!
We’re taking a late vacation this summer obviously, waiting on the hubs to get home. But we are so excited about London!
Thanks for the link up Coco and enjoy that new bike!
Your vacation will be extra-special I’m sure!
I remember elk from Rocky Mountain National Park — that was decades ago!
I’ll have more vacation talk at a later date — first up will be the race recap Tuesday, but ID stuff will probably take a bit longer I haven’t even downloaded all my photos yet!
I spent a lot of time at the airport sorting through photos, but I still need to do more!
I actually use both my phone & a real camera on vacations. I don’t have an easy way to get at the real camera’s photos while we’re away — and I’ve been so busy I haven’t even downloaded them yet!
Same, although my new camera with wifi helps with the immediate access to some photos. Reminds me, need to find my charger.
What a great vacation! It looks like it was definitely worth missing out on Starbucks. I never realized a lake could flow into both the Atlantic and the Pacific, much less flow in the seemingly backward way Lake Isa flows. Fascinating!
There is so much cool stuff at Yellowstone! Your family would love it for sure.
What an amazing vacation- totally on my to-do list with my husband. I went many years ago and camped in a tent- those cabins look wonderful!!
