Exploring Washington DC Bike Paths

Trails and Rails To Trails

In the year since I starting cycling with my husband, we’ve ridden on bike paths in local national parks, like the Mount Vernon Trail and Rock Creek Park, and on rails-to-trails bike paths, like the Capital Crescent Trail and the Washington and Old Dominion Trail. I generally prefer the rails-to-trails paths because they are wider, but it is nice to have so much variety and so many options to choose from. Here are some of our favorite Washington DC bike paths.

My Morning Routine With Tiger Lilly

Before we got Tiger Lilly, my husband and I agreed to share dog walking duty. He usually leaves for work by 6:00 am, while I don’t need to leave until about 7:30, but I didn’t want to be responsible for waking a dog every morning.

Tiger Lilly

When we first got Tiger Lilly a year and a half ago, we took turns walking her in the mornings. Gradually, though, I became the morning dog walker, and now I like it that way. It’s a nice way to start my day, and a decent warm up before my workout. I look forward to our o’dark-thirty walks–and the rest of our morning routine together. Continue reading

My iPod Nano Was Possessed By My Yurbuds

Why The Yurbuds® Inspire Talk Weren’t For Me

I had heard so many great things about Yurbuds®, when my Zippearz® went bust just before the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run, I knew it was time to give Yurbuds® a try. Since I also needed new earbuds for my iPhone, I decided to try the “talk” model, which includes a microphone.

I had sizing/comfort issues with the set I bought at Best Buy, but I was able to exchange them for a smaller style through Yurbuds® customer service.

I ended up with this pretty blue set. Continue reading

Slow Cooker Steel Cut Oats Recipe

I don’t read many magazines these days, but we somehow ended up with a subscription to Good Housekeeping, and I’ve been surprised at how interesting and useful I find its articles. I am no domestic goddess, but each issue seems to include at least a few household ideas, product reviews, and family-friendly recipes that I can relate to, and these practical articles are balanced with essays and personal articles that often resonate.

oats

One recipe that caught my attention was for slow cooker steel cut oats. I have a package of steel cut oats that has been collecting dust in my pantry, because I never want to take the time or deal with the clean-up of cooking them on the stove. While I love the baked oatmeal recipe from Madeline at Family Fitness Food (and my variation), I have been trying to use the oven less frequently during the summer, and have been missing my oatmeal.

Cycling On The Washington and Old Dominion Trail

Cycling From Vienna To Ashburn

I’m surprised at how much I’ve come to enjoy cycling since my husband got me a bike last August, to help distract me from my newly empty nest.

Bike 2

I still reserve Saturdays for my long runs, but always look forward to a ride with my sweetie on Sunday.

Cycling Couple

Our 25th wedding anniversary is coming up in October, and when I realized that my work schedule did not leave room for a weekend getaway, I wanted to figure out how to make a day off together truly special, and truly together. Continue reading
