Ominous October Coffee Date

Welcome to the 🎃 October 🎃  Ultimate Coffee Date! I know Halloween is a few weeks off, but it’s becoming one of those holidays people celebrate all month. 👻 You can tell us what you think about that or share whatever else is going on in the virtual coffee date link-up Deborah and I host the first Friday of every month.

Ominous October Coffee Date

If we were having coffee, I would tell you how weird it is to start my day without picking up a grande Americano from my office Starbucks. I bring my coffee from home, but miss the wonderful baristas who were always a bright spot in my day. 😢

My office is near the AMC.
The closest Starbucks is now a 15+ minute walk away

If we were having coffee, I would tell you about my favorite book of the summer.

The first thing you have to know is that it is based on a true story about a couple from England who chased their dream of sailing around the world in a small sailboat—just the two of them—in the mid-70s. They made it across the Atlantic through the Panama Canal to Balboa, but their boat got destroyed by a whale when they were a few hundred miles from their next destination. It won’t spoil it to tell you they eventually get rescued—the story is in how they survive until they do. The “Afterward” has a link to a website with more information on how they author met this couple, photos of the wife’s diary on which much of the book is based, and pictures of their rescue. I find it all mind-blowing.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that my husband and I celebrated our 37th anniversary this week. ❤️ 🥂 ❤️ I think our commitment to each other is as strong as the couple in a Marriage At Sea but I hope it’s never tested to that extent!

If we were having coffee, I would tell you I usually read on cross-country flights, but on my trip to San Diego I decided to binge watch The Pitt—just in time to understand why it was awarded an Emmy!

Now the countdown to season two!

Last weekend I watched two shorter “series” getting attention. Unknown Number was wild! It’s not the point of the story, but I can’t imagine being a teenager in a town so small there is one school for all ages!

I also watched Fit For TV, which is sort of a documentary about The Biggest Loser. I say sort of because it makes excuses for Bob Harper, paints the doctor as an innocent bystander kept out of the loop, and throws Jillian Michaels under the bus. They do admit that everything was done for ratings. Does that mean I should feel bad for watching it?

It was eye-opening to hear that they had absolutely no professional training in working with severely overweight people. So, yeah, all those workouts probably were ill-advised and dangerous.

We’ve also enjoyed High Town and Untamed, if you’re looking for something to watch besides football.

Happy 37th wedding anniversary to you and your husband! A Marriage at Sea sounds very interesting. I might have to get it! Interesting stuff about The Biggest Loser. I hadn’t heard any of that.

    Why did your Starbucks close?

    • Coco says:

They closed a few hundred stores nationwide to cut costs — some say they targeted stores that had unionized but I don’t know if “mine” had.

  2. Catrina says:

Happy anniversary to you and your husband! 37 years is such a wonderful milestone! 🥂

That sailing book sounds absolutely gripping, but also terrifying – I’d much rather read about a whale attack than be anywhere near one myself.

I’m in the middle of “House of Guinness” on Netflix. It’s set in Ireland in the 1860’s. So good!

  3. Michelle says:

Happy Anniversary to you and your husband!

We dropped our HBO/Max subscription earlier this year but have been debating about picking it up again. We’re currently in the last 3 episodes of Alien Earth and I want to get back to The Bear.

  4. Happy anniversary to you both!!

I used to be obsessed with bob and Julian and the whole show! I did watch the documentary and found it very fascinating but not at all surprising in a way

The Pitt is so good! Can’t wait for season 2

  5. Jenny says:

Happy Anniversary! I’m glad you’re not sailing around the world to celebrate (maybe save that for your 50th….) I’ve heard of that book and everyone says it’s really good!
So Starbucks needs to cut costs? Are they not doing well? That’s a little hard to believe. I’m suspicious it does have something to do with the stores that had unionized… sigh. I guess that’s the real “ominous” part of this coffee date.

  6. Jenn says:

    Happy anniversary!

So I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I saw The Pitt actively advertised on TikTok and I tried it. I watched the whole show in two days and SOBBED. And then I watched it again when I made my husband watch it (although we spread it out a little more). It was soooo good. And honestly, there were a few scenarios that came in handy when we were at our estate planning meeting, talking about our final wishes.

Unknown Number was horrifying. I also watched the documentary about Bryan Kohberger. And then I’ve been trying to watch movies: Kpop Demon Hunters (which has great music), Superman, the new Jurassic Park, and Doctor Sleep (older, but really good).

  7. Happy Anniversary!! Wow, that book really sounds intriguing! I can’t imagine such an adventure, but in these modern times it would be a tad bit “easier.” Back in the pre-tech ages, though, it would be so challenging!

  8. Happy anniversary! That’s amazing.

I can’t imagine you starting the day without your Starbucks coffee!

We’re finally watching The Bear but The Pitt on on my list. And are you really surprised that The Biggest Loser people had no experience working with obese people? I’m not in the least!

  9. Marcia says:

    Happy Anniversary!
We talked about doing a long sailing trip like that, alas it never happened. Or maybe that’s a good thing. Ha!
We just finished the first season of The Buccaneers. It’s fun!

I watched Fit for Life and was horrified. I’m all for tough love but the way they spoke to so many of those people was awful. And the fact they had no training either — well I guess when you know better, you do better.

My mum grew up in a small town on the west coast of Norway which was small enough for them to have one school for all ages. Her dad was the headmaster and teacher 😂

    Happy 37th Anniversary!

  11. Renée says:

    Happy 37th anniversary!
that book / story sounds absolutely amazing and makes me want to read it. problem is I don’t hold focus well with reading and I promised myself to first eat the last book I bought in July which is “The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper”. It’s also fascinating so far, but I’m only on the first woman’s story. What I like the most is that finally it’s about the Victims and not just portraying them as “prostitutes”. They were real women. There is a real reason why they were in the position they were in at the time. Anyway, I might add this one to the list after I finish the Five!!

I watched Fit for Life and have to say I wasn’t shocked at all, though I used to really like Bob (don’t ask) but he just came off as a super creep in the series. And we all knew Jillian was a real piece of work. But I bought into ALL of that and let it “inspire” me without, at the time, really considering just how harmful it was and still is.

  12. Wendy says:

I loved A Marriage at Sea! And my hubs and I have been married for 37 years as well! Happy anniversary!

  13. Farrah says:

I’m in San Diego now! 😀 It’s been so long since I’ve been here. I don’t have enough time to do everything I wanna do, haha.

One of my attendings was on The Biggest Loser! He was able to keep a good amount of the weight off afterward and mostly felt supported during the show, but there definitely was a lot that was done for ratings.

I just heard about A Marriage at Sea from Wendy! Will be hopefully reading it soon. :] Happy anniversary!
