Wrapping Up After The Solar Eclipse

This was a week when so much happened and yet so little happened. When the astronomical event of the century occurs on Monday, what can you say about the rest of the week?

Total Solar Eclipse 2017

#TotalSolarEclipseSeflie

I knew the eclipse wouldn’t be spectacular in D.C., but it still was pretty cool. We gathered on our office’s rooftop patio during peak eclipse time, and shared eclipse-rated sunglasses and photo-taking tips while the moon passed in front of the sun. It never got the slightest bit dark, but the light did seem *different*.

Total Solar Eclipse

My son experienced the total eclipse in Clemson, and he said it was truly amazing. This is one of the pictures he took as the sky darkened.

Hard to believe this was taken at the same time of day as my picture above.

Weekly Wrap

Like I said, the rest of my week was uneventful. I tried to keep my workouts on the light side ahead of the Reston Metric Century.

Monday: Orange Theory Fitness + Quick Strength For Runners
                                      (^^Amazon affiliate link — check it out!^^)
Earning only one splat point in this class left me wondering if my target heart rate zones will change after my next birthday. I didn’t push my pace to the limit, but I still was running at 7 mph or faster at an incline of 4% or higher. I think it was the 1 minute at 8.0 mph and 4% incline that finally got my heart rate into the orange zone.

When I got to the office gym, the other woman was just finishing her workout so I decided to do a workout from Quick Strength For Runners to minimize our overlap in the locker room.  ðŸ˜‰

Tuesday: Quick Strength For Runners + 3 mile run
I had planned to do my long run on Tuesday, but it was too dang humid. I decided to do a combo workout from home, starting with Quick Strength For Runners and then running 3 miles outside.

Humid August Run

92% humidity!

I thought I’d run on the track, but it was still so dark I opted for neighborhood streets.

Wednesday: Indoor Cycling at Ryde/Revolve
I have one more ride in my package at Revolve ….

Thursday: 8 mile run
The humidity broke Wednesday night, and I think the weather kept getting nicer during this run. It was amazingly cool!

I ran up to the Capitol, and then took a detour into the World War II memorial on my way back.

It was hard to tear myself away and head back for work!

Friday: CPY2
The “peak pose” of this class was “chin stand,” but it was led with the intention to “have fun” so I gave it an unsuccessful try with no expectations or regret!

Saturday: Quick Strength For Runners
I was going to take a full rest day ahead of the Reston Metric Century, but I realized that I could do a workout from Quick Strength For Runners without taxing my legs.

side planks, side crunches and clamshells …

Sunday: Reston Metric Century–recap coming soon!

  1. We were able to experience the total eclipse (had to travel several hours to get there, though)…but it was quite the epic experience. I had to laugh at your mention of “the other woman.” Are you gonna be sharing weekly updates on her? LOL I”m excited to hear about your big ride!

  2. Teresa says:

Great week Coco! Can’t wait to hear about your metric century! No solar eclipse was seen in Hawaii …it was predicted to pass early in the morning and we were just too tired to get up for it. Besides, it wasn’t going to be anywhere near even half totality. Sleep vs disappointing solar eclipse …sleep won out. lol

  3. Kimberly G says:

Congrats on another great week of training! That’s so cool that your son was able to experience the total eclipse! It was kind of cloudy here so we didn’t get to see that much.

I hope that the Reston Metric Century Bike Ride went well today!

  4. I was a little underwhelmed by the eclipse itself but I loved the experience. All the hospital employees were outside, sharing glasses–it was a very cool moment.

Looking forward to your recap from the ride. And yes, I’m back, rolling again…

  5. Very funny about you and the other woman in the locker room. Think she reads your blog?? LOL Can’t wait to read all about your ride congrats!

  6. Sara says:

Great job this week! It was cloudy here….and we weren’t in the path of totality. Unfortunately, I was in a work meeting though so I don’t know what it looked like anyway! I’ve been meaning to go back and search through some videos to see what it looked like in totality. I’m sure it was pretty amazing!

  7. carla says:

we are so so so HARVEY SOGGY but got power back this morning and there is NO BETTER WAY TO BE JOLTED FROM SLEEP than that sound of the a/c!

    xo

  8. Marcia says:

You are a beast to be able to work so hard! Ugh sorry you have to work around that slob on a regular basis. I know the feeling. It got a little dark here, definitely cooler, and was so still. I caught glimpses of the eclipse through the clouds but the pics from the path of totality are amazing.

    • Coco says:

I think some of the cloudy eclipse pictures turned out pretty cool. I need to make peace with my locker-mate … or readjust my schedule.

  9. Another great week – you are so consistent! That picture your son took is so cool. I was underwhelmed by the eclipse up here in Boston – I’ll have to make a plan for 2024 😉

  10. Lesley says:

I didn’t get the total eclipse, but it did get to a dusk type of lighting, and we heard crickets. It also cooled off, so that could’ve been the time to be out running on the path in town.

  11. It was nice to finally get some cooler weather this week! Your runs by the Capitol always look so beautiful!

Can’t wait for the recap of your Century Ride – congratulations!

  12. Ivanna says:

Great training week and great sights! I didn’t see much of the eclipse myself but I did sit outside and was able the see the sky darken a little, such a cool experience.

  13. Chaitali says:

Great photo from your son! I thought it was cool to watch in this area as well but it didn’t seem anywhere near the experience of people that saw the total eclipse. I’m going to have to try that for next time.

  14. Well, you look really happy in the photo so I’m guessing the ride went well.

No, really didn’t get to experience the eclipse. And yes, obviously safe from the hurricane. And so are my friends in TX, but I know it’s still very difficult for them. Austin is really too far inland to really get clobbered, but it will get flooding, I know. And I have friends in Houston, too.

  15. The eclipse wasn’t really anything spectacular here either!

  16. Elle says:

Not much eclipse effect seen here… a bit of darkening but minimal I think.

  17. How cool your son could see the whole eclipse. We were underwhelmed in the Chicago area as well. Great week for you–can’t wait to read your recap!

  18. Rachel says:

Your son’s pic is amazing!!! I can’t wait for 2024 because CLE will be in the path of totality.

I’m so jealous you get to run in DC day in and day out. 🙂

  19. My experience was not as exciting. It was cloudy so we couldn’t see much.

  20. We’ve really been getting spoiled with the weather lately, haven’t we? Something tells me that summer will make at least one last return, but until that happens I’ll be thoroughly enjoying the break in the heat and humidity.

  21. Karen says:

Orange theory sounds like you get really incredible work outs.
Someone at work had glasses and I saw the moon passing the sun for a brief moment, I just noticed the shadows on the ground were odd but it wasn’t a huge change in light. It was extremely cloudy here.
When that humidity goes away it feel life changing!
