Snowed In Runfessions

Well, it’s already the last day of the first month of 2026. Luckily I don’t have to brave icy roads to get to the runfessional at Marcia’s Healthy Slice. Join me as we cleanse our souls soles before we head into the second month of the year.

Snowed In Runfessions

I runfess that as I’m writing this on Thursday I haven’t been outside since Saturday! We did get 5”-7” of snow on Sunday, followed by a few hours of sleet, followed by a few hours of freezing rain, followed by a few days of temperatures in the teens and 20s. That means our backyard still looks like this, even though Scooby has been out many, many times.

Look, Ma—no paw prints!

I runfess that even before the snow, it was too cold to walk Scooby—I don’t do the 20s at dark o’clock! On the other hand, no matter how cold it is outside, I have to crack the basement door when I run on my tread—and turn the fan on!

One morning when it was in the low teens I did a 30-min tread class without cracking the door open, and regretted it pretty quickly. On the other hand, when I’m working at my desk at the other end of the basement, I bundle up in bulky sweaters and blankets because it feels so much colder than it is upstairs. 🤷‍♀️

I runfess I’m starting to wonder if it might be time for a fresh pair of running shoes. I have not been good about tracking miles, and had to search for a blog post about “new shoes” to figure out how long I’ve had them. Now I know I got my current pair in April, but I still don’t know the mileage of  my “outdoor” shoes.

My April 2025 purchase

When I do get a new pair I should set up my Garmin to auto-log my different pairs for outdoor vs. treadmill runs—but then I’ll have to remember to correct miles I do on a hotel treadmill in my outdoor shoes. 🧐 Speaking of which, I’m supposed to have my first business trip of the year next week—to Boston! I definitely plan to use the hotel gym this time. 🥶

Do you track the miles on your shoes?

I can well imagine overheating on the treadmill and then freezing at your desk.

Boston sounds really nice! Enjoy that hotel gym bubble – who knows, maybe you will even get to do a few miles outdoors!

I have been hibernating as well – just too damn cold! Always so grateful for my treadmill and bike. I chuckled at the thought of you opening the basement door – our basement is so cold that I’m still running in long-sleeves!

I would love to see you on one of your trips to Boston – any chance you’re coming back when it’s warmer LOL

  3. It has been rough gong weather wise for sure! I am really missing my outdoor hilly walks and seriously slacking on the steps. Next week is looking better if we can get some melting. So thankful for Peloton!

  4. You guys really got hit hard with the weather! My outdoor streak is still going strong (today is Day-1883) but it’s been so cold and windy (even without snow). I never keep track of the miles on my shoes. I rotate through 3-4 pairs captains, so it would be a major task…

    I don’t track my shoes… I rotate them a lot.

Luckily you must be WDH… me too. But that means no Starbucks.

Enjoy Boston… it’s fun to go to a new place. Hoe it warms up a bit.

Wow, that is crazy- you really are snowed in!!! What does Scooby think of all this? Does he like going out there?
I don’t track my miles. I know I should, but I just kind of go by feel. When my feet start to get uncomfortable I figure it’s time for new shoes.

    Oh, snow Scooby! How cute!

I do roughly track the miles, but more in the way of “it’s been three months… it’s time.” I wish I had a way to do it online, but I don’t feel like manually tracking, and I don’t think Apple watch does it.q

Sounds like you got the messy “ice sandwich” my daughter in Blacksburg got. What a mess. We were just sub-zero all week but had lake effect snow squalls to contend with on the way home from surgery. I was always pretty loose with tracking mileage. I did it more by feel than anything else.
