This weekend I participated in my second Pelofondo and spent some of the extra time on my Bike+ exploring different Peloton rides.
I pledged 50 miles and decided to do it all in one day.
Exploring Different Peloton Rides
When I signed up for this weekend’s Pelofondo I thought my husband would be out of town, so I pledged 50 miles figuring I’d have plenty of time to ride. When his trip was canceled, the weekend forecast was gloomy, so I still thought spending a few hours on my Bike+ would be a fine way to spend a rainy Saturday. The weekend wasn’t a washout, but I stuck to my pledge and decided to knock out all my miles in one day. I broke up the miles into mostly short classes, and explored different types of Peloton rides I haven’t tried before.
The first “different” ride I did was a 30 min “Entertainment” ride featuring Susie Chan’s Badwater 135 experience. Talk about amazing and inspiring! Susie didn’t take up running until she was in her 30s but certainly found her groove in ultra distance events. The first half of the video focuses on her training—including treadmill runs in a “heat box” to prepare for the conditions—while the second half has clips from the grueling event.
You can watch the 30 min video on YouTube.
After that steady-state ride, I was ready for some fun with Ally + Camila’s new Pitbull Ride. They both used to be backup dancers for Pitbull, so they knew all the words and were very entertaining.
I’ve tried Peloton’s scenic rides before, but the instructor-guided scenic rides are different in a good way. I chose a 20 min ride with Jon Hosky and really enjoyed it. He cues you through climbs and flats as you watch him ride through gorgeous scenery.
There was also drone footage of panoramic views.
I wanted to get more than halfway done before I took a break for breakfast, so I opted for a 15 min Lanebreak ride to take me to the 30 mile mark.
Lanebreak has a video game vibe—
you adjust your resistance and cadence to earn points.
- After 2 1/2 cups of coffee and 2 servings of peanut butter toast, I was ready to face my final rides. I’m pretty sure CVV’s Alpe d’Huez ride was not the smartest choice, but he gave us a long warm-up and 6 minute cool down that came just when I was ready to quit.
This is probably only the 3rd 60 min class I’ve taken, but thanks anyway Strava!
I was still 3 miles shy of my goal, and thought a 10 min cool down ride would get me there. A few minutes in I realized I would not be able to take it easy, so I cranked up the resistance and kept up my cadence and barely got the distance I needed.
The Pelofondo app pulls data from Peloton, which doesn’t count the ~ .25 miles I usually log during pre-class intros and doesn’t count any distance I sneak after a ride ends. I did NOT want to have to take another class—even a 5 minute one—and was relieved the math worked out.
I tacked on two 5 minute stretches, gave my bike a thorough wipe down, and gathered my sweaty towels for the laundry. Myy legs were noodly, but fortunately my delicate parts were not bothered at all. 😉
Weekly Wrap
Of course I did other Peloton workouts this week, but after all that Peloton recapping, I’ll just share the outdoor activities that bookended my week.
Sunday (Easter): 28 mile bike ride
After going to an early morning Easter service, we donned Easter-colored cycling kits and rode our bikes over to visit my Mom.
Friday: 6.3 Scooby Miles
I took advantage of a work-from-home day and earlier daylight to do my weekend “long” run on Friday. I didn’t really need the long sleeves, but wasn’t too warm with them.
I looked up after stopping my Garmin to see the neighborhood fox just ahead, 2 doors down from my house. Scooby was tired enough from the run that I could keep him under control and snap a picture.
He looks so small!
A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link, and to each of you for stopping by.
I was thinking of Jenny as I rode 50 miles and hope her trail race went well! I’m also still awed by Catrina’s Boston marathon but not surprised she did so well. I’m lucky to know so many amazing women!
Congrats on completing another Pelofondo! And how rude that the app doesn’t acknowledge those portions of a mile before the ride “officially” starts and ends.
That is a tiny fox. Good job to Scooby for letting you snap a picture.
Susie Chan is so amazing! I should listen to this on a walk. Congrats on completing your Pelofondo! After all these years, I’ve not had the urge to do one. Maybe sometime
Ooh, I’m gonna check-out the Pitbull ride. I didn’t Aly and Camilla are forever back-up dancers for him! I actually saw him in concert two summers ago,LOL. He’s not my go-to genre, but the show was a major dance party with my daughters and sister. Nice job on the Pelofondo! I never think to plan for them and they always happen before I realize it.
Congratulations to the second Pelofondo! Really, I thought that was an event by Peloton. But what do I know, I only learned that Peloton existed from reading all these running blogs!
I copied the link to that YouTube video – we always enjoy some good ultra marathon documentaries.
I agree. I was in awe of Catrina’s Boston time and Jenny running 50 miles!!
This weekend was mostly a washout. The worst rain was during my 5k.
That’s a lot of variety on your rides. Good job on getting those 50 miles all done in one day!
