Anxious April Coffee Date

If we were having coffee, I would ask how the first quarter of 2025 treated you. My ski vacation certainly was a highlight, but since then I’ve had two friends whose husbands passed away unexpectedly, and the outrageous actions of the current administration are hitting closer and closer to home, with cuts at the Patent Office (which is 100% funded by user fees, so zero tax dollars will be saved), chilling executive orders issued against law firms, and tariffs that will hit every budget. I personally haven’t been affected—yet—but the anxiety is real.

If we were having coffee, I might use one of my ceramic Starbucks travel mugs. I just added the patterned one to my collection because I’m going into the office 3-4 days a week these days, and having two travel mugs wasn’t enough.

“But don’t you get coffee at Starbucks?” you might ask. Yes, but I need a cup of coffee to drink on my drive to the office Starbucks where I can get my cup of coffee. 😝

If we were having coffee, I might show up in my new running shoes. I should have runfessed that I’ve been hesitant to wear the neutral model I bought in November on outdoor runs, and finally decided to just get another pair of stability shoes for outside.

If we were having coffee, I might show up wearing the new casual shoes I bought at Talbots. I’ve been watching old episodes of Suits, but the standard dress code at my office is now jeans and sneakers.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I’ve been spoiled by the liberal return policy for running shoes. My new Asics came with a 30-day no hassle return period, but these shoes could not go back once I wore them outside.

Luckily they still felt good after wearing them all day.

If we were having coffee, we might talk about April Fools pranks on social media. I saw a few good ones, but I thought the emotional baggage car by Amtrak Virginia was particularly clever—and timely.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I am trying to minimize my anxiety by trading doomscrolling for reading. If you are looking for your next good book, I shared my March book reviews and some other sweet novels here.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you I have officially registered for the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in May and am recruiting for my team. I’ve put in paperwork to make a behind-the-scenes donation, but would love your support through my donation page.

hehe, no pranks on my end, thankfully! I love the emotional baggage car though, haha. I’ve been all about the lighter reads lately too because I’m absolutely disgusted with the administration. :[ I’m glad you haven’t been personally affected and pray it stays that way, but things do not look great. ._.

  2. Catrina says:

Oof, this week’s news was next-level anxiety fuel. As if we needed more global chaos to go with our morning coffee!
Your take on the Patent Office cuts and legal targeting is scary, too. I’m glad you’re swapping doomscrolling for books. And thank goodness for running—it’s the best kind of sanity saver.

  3. Jenny says:

Down with doomscrolling! Up with reading! I read your book reviews. I’m also trying to read more these days.
I like your collection of Starbucks travel mugs so you can drink coffee on the way to Starbucks, ha ha. They have a purple mug that’s been calling my name.

  4. Marcia says:

When the kids (or a kid) is home, the dishwasher runs every day. With just us two, I can run it every other day. Love the emotional baggage car! Ha! Love the new travel mug too!

  5. Debbie says:

My favorite Instagram April Fool’s joke was by a local bike shop advertising slick tires after saying that Loudoun County had outlawed wide knobby tires on their gravel roads. LOL

  6. Michelle says:

No April fool’s pranks here – that emotional baggage car feels spot on!

Like you I’ve been trying to trade time domescrolling for reading – proving to be much better for my blood pressure.

Nice travel mug! And, I fully embrace the coffee needed on the way to get coffee 😉

  7. Yes, I absolutely run my dishwasher daily no matter how full. I do find it amusing that you drink coffee on the way to get coffee but hey whatever works for you. I guess it’s much easier to dress for work when you can wear jeans and sneakers.

  8. I had to laugh at your matter-of-fact explanation for the extra travel mug 😉 It’s crazy how casual dress codes are everywhere these days. Even watching the NCAA BB tournament, most coaches (and their staff) are in 1/4-zips and khakis instead of the “old school” suits.

  9. I’m not an April Fool’s fan but the Best Date Chicago Team fooled me with a CTA food festival – like on the el train! I was like – OMG so unsanitary.

I can’t imagine how stressful things must be for you and your friends and neighbors. This past few months have been a lot. I hope we can catch up next time you’re here!

  10. Jenn says:

Oh my gosh, it’s horrifying! And my anxiety is out of control. I regularly wake up at 3:30AM in a panic. I hate it.

I doom-Candy Crush now. Sometimes, just playing mindless games is so helpful. And I”m trying to read more. I’m in a book I don’t love right now — I love how it’s written but I’m having a hard time getting into the story. I guess it balances out.

    Love the new running shoes!

  11. This is not a dream? The current administration is really doing all of those awful things? Drinking coffee on the drive to get more coffee is something I would do too.

  12. Darlene S Cardillo says:

If I am home, it’s only one cup of coffee but I drive to work, I stop at Starbucks for a second cup.

These are tense times… these 4 years can’t go by quick enough.

I was just thinking about what shoes to wear when I go to work (we can’t wear jeans). Normally I wear my comfy boots but it’s getting too warm for that.
