Talking About Coffee In Copenhagen
If we were having coffee, I would tell you all about my trip to Copenhagen, including the coffee—which was not my favorite part. 😉
If we were having coffee, I would tell you the first coffee I had in Copenhagen was from Starbucks.
This Americano hit the spot after my overnight flight.
There are two Starbucks in Copenhagen, and neither is near my hotel. This one wasn’t too far from the botanical gardens that I visited on my first day as part of my sightseeing mission to stay awake.
Another place I visited on Sunday was Christiansborg Palace. It was hard to find the entrance because the finish line for Ironman Copenhagen was just to one side, but I made my way around the barriers into the gates.
The Ironman activities were on the other side—
straight through the arch.
The wing on the right of the building houses Parliament, and the wing on the left is the fancier/historic wing that is still used for royal ceremonial purposes—meetings with foreign dignitaries, dinners, etc. The rooms are gorgeous. This is the Alexander Room, with a frieze about Alexander the Great that goes around the entire ceiling.
You also can visit “The Ruins” under the palace where you can see the remains of walls from a castle built on the site in the 1100s. It was fascinating to learn about Christian IV’s daughter, Leonora Christina, who was imprisoned in the tower without charge for almost 22 years, on suspicion that she and her Swedish husband had conspired to overthrow her father ….
If we were having coffee, I would tell you I got most of my coffee in Copenhagen at a tiny cafe near my hotel.
See the bicycle in the reflection?
All the main streets have bike lanes, and bike-commuting is common.
Can you tell how small that cup is? Since they didn’t have cream or half-and-half, I ordered my Americano with a bit of foamed milk. It cost 45DKK (Dutch Kroner), or about $5. I guess because of exchange rate fluctuations, it hit my VISA as $5.11 some days and $5.13 on others. Because of my struggles with jet lag, I stuck with one cup in the morning and drank danksvand—sparkling water—the rest of the day.
If we were having coffee, I would make sure you saw my photos from running in Copenghagen, but also show you a few others. My hotel was across the street from Odd Fellows Mansion—it was built in the 1700s and serves as a concert hall/theater today. It was such a lovely sight to wake up to!
On a few nights, I saw theater-goers coming and going.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that as much I liked my hotel, its basement-level restaurant did not tempt me. Instead, I either dined outside at Nyhavn, or enjoyed the terrace cafe at The Admiral Hotel on the harbor.
Unwinding after my second day of meetings.
What would you tell me over coffee?
Your photos from Copenhagen make me want to go back!
We had a layover there on our way back from Greece, almost exactly 28 years ago. I insisted we stay the night. And I’m glad we did!
I’ve been through Copenhagen a handful of times but only spent quality time there once 20+ years ago. Your pics bring back all the memories. The first thing I thought when I saw that coffee was I’ll bet it’s tiny. Haha!
I’ve enjoyed seeing your photos – Copenhagen is a place I would love to visit! It looks like you packed a lot in for a work trip.
It helped arriving early Sunday and staying close to some of the sights!
Nice pics of Copenhagen, Coco! It looks like such a beautiful place, with great architecture and lots of history!
It has a fun mix of really old buildings and really modern ones!
You made the most of your work trip. I’m sipping Starbucks as I read this.
Coffee in Europe seems to taste better.
Ive enjoyed your pix. Thanks for sharing.
I think this will go down as the best work trip ever. I’m not sure why, but everything was great. And I was so stressed over it, and everything was easy.
Copenhagen is one of those cities we always say we could go to anytime but never have. You squeezed in a lot there! I love the European coffee and would have hit up all the small cafes and avoided the Starbucks! LOL.
It’s a pretty compact city, so you can see a lot in a short time.
Whatever I would tell you over coffee isn’t as exciting as a trip to Copenhagen! I was there a long time ago for one day, so I didn’t see as much as you did. But it’s such a beautiful city. It sounds like your trip was wonderful, other than the tiny, overpriced coffee without cream!
The lack of cream was tough!
I love Copenhagen! (The coffee at Emmers bakery and Joe and the Juice was really good.) Thanks for sharing your trip! So much fun – I hope we can chat about that in person soon.
I think I’ll be in Chicago in late October — maybe you’ll be in town then too. 😉
I love all your Copenhagen stories and photos!
Isn’t it cool many people are on bikes in Europe? That’s the first thing I notice when we get back to Zurich from Cape Town… so many bikes!
The cities are trying to become even bike-friendlier going forward, which I wholeheartedly support.
I think Copenhagen is famously bike friendly. It really was nice to see.
I’ve never been to Copenhagen but it’d be cool to visit someday! That tiny coffee cup makes me sad though, haha. I’m glad you got to check out other places while you were there!
I would tell you over coffee how I would love to go a run in Copenhagen!
It’s a great city for running!
I’ve never been to Copenhagen! Looks like you made the most of it and enjoyed your visit there. No cream or half and half for coffee? That is interesting.
Copenhagen looks beautiful.
I don’t mind basement restaurants, but that wouldn’t be my first choice with views like that around.
What a great place to go for a work trip! And so glad you were able to see some of the sights on your runs! I love that bike commuting is so common!
