Running In Copenhagen

If you caught my August Runfessions, you know I spent last week in Copenhagen. Yes, it was a business trip, but my meeting schedule had plenty of room for a morning run and the weather cooperated with perfect running conditions.

This is Nyhvn—a very touristy but irresistibly cute area.

Running In Copenhagen

I stayed at different hotel in a different part of town than I have before, and it turned out to be a prime location for running in Copenhagen.

For my first run, I had to go to the Kastellet (the Citadel)—what I refer to as the star fort.

5.0 miles with 2 loops around the fort

Not only do you get this cool map on your Garmin after running around the fort, it also is beautiful. Here you can see one of the two bridges that lead into the fort. You have to run up a ramp to get to the path along the top of the embankments.

There’s even a windmill.

It’s an active military site with barracks and offices in current use, so I saw soldiers guarding the interior and others driving in to work.

My second run was my first reconnaissance run—figuring out whether I could walk to one of my meetings. The person I was meeting said it was a 600M walk to my metro stop, a 600M walk from the closest metro stop to their office, but only 2000M if I walked the whole way. That may be the case, but after running there I decided to take the metro.

4.6 miles

I did add an out-and-back along the harbor to my run, but it’s different in running shoes!

This is one of the canals I ran along in Christianhavn.

And this is another canal view.

My third run was another reconnaissance run, this time out past the star fort.

3.75 miles

This run took me past The Little Mermaid sculpture.

On may way back, I came across The Genetically Altered Little Mermaid.

For my last run in Copenhagen, I decided to run up to “The Lakes”—a place I’d run before on previous visits.

4.36 miles

To get there from my hotel, I ran through the Rosenborg Castle gardens.

I paused for a photo of Rosenborg Castle.

Then it was just a few blocks further to the Lakes, which are ringed by a soft gravel path popular with runners and dog-walkers.

As you can see, I had fantastic weather for running in Copenhagen, but Friday morning I woke up to rain. It had stopped by the time I got up, but I didn’t feeling like running on slick cobblestones or having to pack wet/muddy running shoes, so I opted for one last walk along the harbor instead.

And one last look at the statute of Christian X near my hotel.

As I told my clients, I hope to come back to Copenhagen in two years. It is really a lovely city, with so much to see and do—not to mention a great place for running.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Love this. You are lucky and I would totally run everyday if it looked like that.

I used to travel to nyc and around Nys. Not exciting. But still fun to run in different places.

Maybe I should sign up for a race!

Those are some lovely areas for running! Copenhagen is a beautiful city. It’s been a while since I was there! I’m glad you got some good weather too, they’ve had some nasty weather in Scandinavia recently (but perhaps less so in Denmark compared to Sweden and Norway).
