Balancing Working And Working Out

I thought August was supposed to be a quiet month at work with most clients on vacation, but I’ve had several projects unexpectedly move from the “back burner” to “top priority.” That led to a few long days and late nights, but I don’t mind working hard as long as I have my morning workout time.

Scooby wasn’t sure about posing with Mrs. Toad.

Working

I’m not sure which was worse, the eight Teams meetings I had on Tuesday, or the Teams meeting scheduled for eight hours on on Friday.

Thankfully it wrapped up after “only” 5 1/2 hours.

On a day like Tuesday, I have to work late to get any work done! On a day like Wednesday with late meetings, I usually have to work a bit longer to wrap up whatever I was working on in the afternoon. Thursday was blissful and productive. Friday was exhausting but at least the meeting was productive.

Working Out (a/k/a Weekly Wrap)

Now you know why I have to workout in the morning. Not to mention that it really is how I want to start my day. No matter how tired I am, nothing gets me going better than a workout—not even a Starbucks Americano. It was too humid to run with Scooby, so I hit my tread and did one solo run in D.C.

Sunday: Core + Flash 15 + 30 mile Ride
I eased into the day walking Scooby and then doing a long core workout, short strength workout, and stretch. Later in the morning we went for a 30 mile bike ride—it was hot, but we made enough of our own breeze for it to be pleasant.

Monday: Core + 20 min LB Strength + 3.25 Tread Miles
Jess’s HIIT run was really good, with blocks of 40 sec, 30 sec, and 20 sec intervals. Definitely one to repeat!

Tuesday: Corepower Yoga
The August flow is focused on hip openers and hamstring stretches—just what I need!

Wednesday: 10 min Core + 10 min Barre + 5.25 mile Run
I did my core and barre workouts at home, and then drove to my office for my run. Otherwise, I’d have to go to my office gym, get towels and a mat to do those workouts (a/k/a warming up for my run), clean those up and put them away, and then head out to run. OTOH, I’m not sure if sitting in my car for 15 minutes undoes whatever good I’m doing with a pre-run barre class. 🤷‍♀️

This view is worth some hassle!

Thursday: 10 min Core + 20 min UB Strength + 30 min Peloton Rides
Office gym day with a tough but fun HIIT ride from Hannah F. This one had an EMOM format, which I really like. 4 x 45 on/15 off, 4 x 40 on/20 off, 4 x 30 on/30 off, 4 x 20 on/40 off .

Friday: 45 min Strength + 3.0 Tread Miles
I accidentally turned my alarm off and didn’t get up until 6 am. With that long Teams meeting on my calendar, I decided to take Scooby on a longer walk and focus on my planned strength workout. I was so pumped up after that class, I decided to go ahead and hop on my tread and just start working later than usual (@ 9 instead of @8). I figured I needed and deserved that extra “me” time—and all the endorphins I could get.

Saturday: 10 min Core + 30 min UB
It was too warm and humid to run with Scooby, so I took him for a long walk, and opted for an upper body workout day. Callie’s not my favorite instructor (too perky?), but her programming is really good.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Has your August been quiet or crazy?

I don’t envy all those meetings one bit. That’s a big reason why I left my corporate job. We’d have all-day meetings to PREPARE for more meetings. Ugh! I feel you on the early am workouts. It truly is the best and only time of day to get it done. Love that pic of Scooby and Mr Toad!

  2. Wendy says:

Ugh those meetings!!! That’s why I could never do a desk job. I need to keep moving all day. I like the variety my job brings and I have very few meetings. But like you, if I don’t workout in the morning, it doesn’t get done.

That view was worth it!! gorgeous.

August has been crazy some weeks and some not. I think work was busier for me in July and will pick up again in Sept,

You manage to fit is all in.

  4. Jenny says:

Yes, early mornings. I’ve been reading a blog by a woman who goes to the gym AFTER DINNER. How is that even possible??? And, I’m with you- especially if I’m going to be sitting all day (which usually doesn’t happen for me, actually) I want to get in a workout first. I love that DC sunrise photo!

    • Coco says:

That would never happen! When my kids were little I’d go to an afternoon aerobics class (yep) after my husband got home (before dinner) and that was a stressful schedule too.

  5. Yep, as you know, I’m also a card-carrying member of the early-risers workout club 😉 I can get workouts done after work (without issue), but I do prefer to start my mornings (early!) with some kind of fitness fun.

  6. Jenn says:

I would be DRAINED from 8 teams meetings. I can barely get through one. I was not created for video calls. Hopefully, this season of Teams is short for you.

Love that photo of the monument. That would be very energizing for me to see on the regular.

  7. Deborah Brooks says:

Sitting through 8 hours of meetings is torture! I could use some more hip and hamstring focus classes. I just need to commit to doing them like I used to. Hope you have a less stressful week

  8. Susanne says:

    OMG that Friday meeting!! 😵
I agree with you about morning workouts, it’s such a wonderful and energising way to start the day.
    I love that sunrise.

  9. Catrina says:

In my corporate days, our team wasn’t allowed to have any meetings that lasted longer than 2.5 hours. But they still managed to overrun these so that we had to sit for longer. Ghastly.
No wonder you turned the alarm off on Friday morning, ha!

  10. Michelle says:

So many meetings – and I thought my schedule was crazy! LOL!

You do an amazing job of fitting in as many classes as you do! I had to chuckle at your Callie comment – maybe it is the “perkiness” but she’s not a fave of mine either.

Hope this week is quieter for you!

  11. So many meetings is so tough!

I think the Barre doe s you good even if you’re in the car after. Just think about how you’d feel if you never did that kind of class at all!

Hey, I spent almost 4 hours driving yesterday to literally see my mom for 90 minutes. Maybe that’s why I wasn’t as stressed as I usually am, but I was still pretty darn tired when I got home.

  12. Debbie says:

Ugh on those long meetings, and on a Friday at that!

My August is a little quieter with clients on vacation and me being away for the past week.
