Crossing The February Finish Line

The month of February definitely felt like a sprint—or maybe it was more like an intervals workout. Cramming for four oral hearings in one day. Getting projects done early so I could relax on my ski vacation. Powering through a scary email in box when I got home. But I made it!

I also met my goal for my MRTT chapter’s February challenge—to walk and/or run in miles 3 times the U.S. medal count. I crossed that finish line when my Saturday long run brought my total to 75.5 miles.

February Finish Line

Speaking of finish lines, I’ve got the feeling government agencies are declaring that we have reached the end of the covid-19 pandemic because we’re over it, not because it’s over. Overnight my region went from a region of moderate risk based on levels of community transmission to a region of low risk based on risk of hospitalization.

But I want to avoid getting covid—not just avoid getting hospitalized with covid—so I’ll keep wearing my mask to the grocery store and avoid large indoor public gatherings. I’m not staying home like we did in the early days of the pandemic—I will eat at a not-crowded restaurant, and get on an airplane (where masks are still required)—but I’m not ready to let all my guards down.

Weekly Run Down

Long hours at my computer jacked up my left hip for a few days, but thankfully a lot of stretching helped work that kink out. I earned my 4K minutes badge on the Peloton app and enjoyed classes with playlists based on the Super Bowl halftime show and in the Tribe Called Quest artist series.

Monday: Core + Glutes/Legs Strength + 5.1 Scooby Miles
President’s Day was a quasi-holiday for me. Technically, my office was closed, but I had things to catch up on. In honor of the holiday, I took my time with my morning workout and took a long mid-day break to meet a friend for lunch.

Tuesday: Core + Upper Body Strength + 35 min Peloton Ride

Wednesday: Core + Chest/Back Strength + 4.1 Scooby Miles
I was expecting rain, but willing to braving it for temps in the 60s! I caught a break and barely got wet, although Scooby’s belly got filthy from the wet sidewalks-ick!

Thursday: Core +  30 min Peloton Ride + 10 min Arm/Light Weights
I braved Kendall’s class for the halftime show play list, and was rewarded with my 4K minute badge. Her class wasn’t too bad as long as I ignored her cadence targets. I cannot hit 100 rpm in a warm-up!

Friday: Core + 4.0 Treadmill Miles
This morning it was rainy and back to sub-freezing temperatures, so too risky to run with Scooby. After our walk I warmed up with a core workout, loosened my hip with a 10 min yoga class, and then hopped on my treadmill for Chase’s Tribe Called Quest run.

Saturday:  Core + 8.5 Scooby Miles
My hip felt pretty good, so after warming up with a 10 min core and 10 min barre class, I took Scooby out on my 8 mile loop. It was a Who Let The Dogs Out kind of run. I swear I haven’t encountered so many dogs on a run ever.

Sunday: Core + FB Strength + Arms/Light Weights
Started my day with a strength stack. If the weather lives up to the 50s and sunny forecast, I will go for a bike ride!

Yep, made it out!

And with that, I am almost ready for March.

Deborah and I will be hosting the March Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend. We’ll open the (link-up) doors Friday, March 4th!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Do you reach your February goals?

Yes, Covid continues to be confusing. We’re hearing rumors that we’ll be dropping the mask mandate at work soon, which I’m actually fine with- but maybe that’s because I’ve already had Covid.
You had a great week of running! I’m sure Scooby was happy about that. Congrats on the Peloton badge and the MRTT challenge. You’re definitely ending February on a high note!

I’d be looking forward to that too. Hopefully you can trust your clients to play it safe if they are not feeling well.

  2. I was watching some of Saturday Night Live last night, and the skits I saw had a lot of Covid stuff in them. I thought they were well done, and in a non-disrespectful manner, but I bet they will get a lot of backlash for those who think differently. Max almost needs a daily foot/leg/tummy bath these days because he’s a mess after even a short walk around the block…all the sand and residual grit is like a magnet to him. I need to pay more attention to the artist series/themes on Peloton. Somehow, they are not catching my radar, LOL.

Well, if you’ve lost someone to covid, it could be hard to laugh about, but I think the rest of us need some comic relief.

  3. You did sprint to the finish and had a great week of running and workouts. Today is just gorgeous I totally over dressed

I almost overdressed for the bike, but if hadn’t worn that light jacket I would have been miserable for the first 5 miles!

  4. Congrats for surviving all of your crazy work deadlines and for racking up some great mileage!

    Enjoy your bike ride!

I plan to continue masking, though like you, have been eating inside at non-crowded restaurants (though I still feel a little uneasy!) I am going to visit my parents in two weeks (including my mom who is very high-risk) and really don’t want to bring anything to her. Definitely testing leading up to it, but we will be flying there. Stocking up on Kn95’s to wear when I’m near her. The pandemic is not over in that respect! I have read that the federal mask mandate for flying may be dropped, which makes me sad…I’m not ready for that.

Anyways, great week for you! How does Scooby do when you encounter all the dogs? Ruth could care less, but in Matilda’s senior years, she’s become a little crankier, not sure why.

It really seems to depend on the dog. Some he pays no mind to, others he leaps up in the air for — playfully, we think, but we are cautious. A few weeks ago our neighbor’s Yorkie attacked Scooby! Poor boy just stood there until they could get hold of him.

  6. I wrap up my goals on Tuesday! Nice job Coco!

I’m still cautious, too, for a variety of reasons, most of which you know. Add on to that that I know several people who had mild cases and still had lingering after effects.

Our next super spreader is my mom’s birthday in roughly 2 weeks, of course indoors in her very small apartment. But 94 deserves a celebration, especially after the year we/she had!

Imagine how dirty Bandit’s belly gets considering how low to the ground he is! And Lola & Chester were even closer to the ground!

Hopefully you are all vaccinated and healthy and celebrate without covid. 🙂 It definitely is time to have those family celebrations we put off.

You know we won’t be dropping the mask mandate at my office anytime soon. I keep hoping we can stop wearing N95 masks and go back to the surgical masks. I doubt it will happen tho. I plan on still masking when I go out to the store, tho.

I’m wondering how Scooby does with other dogs. Cocoa hates them. Yesterday, she almost took out a little Yorkie on our way out of the groomer’s. Yikes.

Scooby’s reaction varies. Usually in stressful situations like the vet he’s whiny, but not aggressive. We try to keep our distance to be safe. That was one plus of pandemic vet visits — the vet tech got him from the car and took him right to an exam room – no anxious waiting room time.

  8. Darlene says:

I’m still masking indoors but obviously traveling and living life.

Great week of workouts. Congrats on your finish.

Glad you were able to escape work and go skiing. We all need a break sometimes.

  9. Marcia says:

February sounds like it was busy for you in a productive way. These quickly changing mask rules throw the credibility of the CDC and of course the government into question for me. I’m not sure why no masks, cloth masks, double masks, etc are such a moving target. At the end of the day, I think we all need to do what we think is best.

  10. kookyrunner says:

February really did feel like a sprint! i 100% agree with you about Covid. Here they dropped the indoor mask mandate again, but there are still quite a few people (including me) wearing masks for OTF classes. I think people still want to be cautious, which is a good thing.

I definitely want to take Kendall’s class, based solely on the Halftime Show playlist, lol.

  11. runswithpugs says:

    February has been crazy!

So you know where I live, masks haven’t been a thing, but I still wear mine. Number one, I can no longer be trusted to fix my face for the public. Number two, it’s not over.

Sorry about your hip – I hope it gets itself back on track!

    Love to see sweet Scooby!
