Holiday Runfessions

I had grand plans of putting together a decade-in-review runfessions posts, but this month has been so hectic, I barely had time to cover December. I was relieved to hear a story on NPR explaining that the new decade doesn’t really start until next year, although I think the switch to 202_ is more meaningful than the explanation that “there was never a year zero.” There was never a year “1” when it was happening either. According to this website, our current numbering system was adopted by one Roman Emperor in an effort to quash the memory of another, and first used in 532.  If you’re still with me after that history lesson, you might as well join me at the runfessional over at Marcia’s Healthy Slice.

Thanks to Lacey and Miranda for the Fairytales and Fitness Friday Five link up.

Make plans to join the first Ultimate Coffee Date of the new year (however you count it) next weekend — Deborah and I will open the (link-up) doors on Friday, and keep the coffee brewing all weekend.

Holiday Runfessions

I Santa-fess that even though my husband is a great gift giver, there are some things I won’t leave to chance. Williams Sonoma peppermint bark is my favorite Christmas treat, so I make sure I have some for my Christmas breakfast by buying a tin myself.

This year when I was ordering tins for my clients (yay for sale pricing and free shipping on Black Friday!), I couldn’t resist ordering a personalized tin for myself. I told my Mom I was making up for a childhood without personalized items–my name was never on those min-license plates or necklaces at gift shops.

I will treasure the tin for years to come!

I runfess that I went ahead and paid to defer my Richmond Half entry to 2020. I’m still not as excited about it as I was to be running on my birthday, but I hear so many great things about this race I decided it was worth another try.

On the other hand, I didn’t even put my name in the lottery for the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run. I runfess that not caring for the 2020 t-shirt design might have had something to do with it, but mostly it was just not wanting to sign up for any 2020 races yet.

Meh

I runfess that I am reluctant to give up on Mizuno running shoes even though they didn’t ask me before redesigning their shoes with a narrower toe box. When I was trying on shoes, I thought the Wave Sky Waveknit felt better than the Wave Inspires which felt better than the Wave Riders, but when I put them on my first thought is “snug.”

Do I wait and see if they give my toes more wiggle room in the new models coming out soon, or explore a different brand?

Did you buy anything for yourself this season?

I did recap the ‘decade” but now that you’ve mentioned that the decade doesn’t truly start until 2021, it just feels wrong…lol

I have only signed up for one race–in February. Taking it slow and seeing how I feel. I had to switch from Mizuno and now I run in Brooks.

    • Coco says:

I hope people don’t think I’m a “Debbie downer” with that intro. We’ll all just mark the end of the decade again next year!

  2. Darlene says:

I hate when they change shoes. I just ordered Altras. I hope they fix my foot.

I registered for many 2020 races. Big mistake.

    Oh well. Live and learn.

  3. Marcia says:

The Sky is the shoe I had to let go last year. I didn’t even know they made a knit version. Why oh why do they keep getting more narrow?? I planned to recap the decade in runfessions as well but failed to comb through the blog sufficiently to even find when the linkup started. My bad! Yikes! That CB10 shirt is pretty awful. Your personalized tin is adorable!

    • Coco says:

I’m so mad at Mizuno! I guess the onlly way to show them is to change brands, but coming back from being sidelined, I don’t want risk a new style seems to bring. But now I’m risking running in the same pair I’ve had for over a year now ….

  4. I also did not get around to my decade long runfessions post! Glad to hear I have another year 🙂 Love the personalized tin it’s super cute and should always be full of some sort of treats. I have not done Richmond yet either but it’s on my birthday this year. Somehow, I cannot get excited about Richmond as a destination.

    • Coco says:

Oh, if you did it for YOUR birthday it would be fun to do it with you! It’s so popular in our MRTT group, and I do think Richmond has more charm than you realize. 😉

  5. Wow, the CB shirt is rather lack-luster. I wasn’t all that impressed with last year’s shirt…the cotton version was a weird light burgundy-ish color (though the light blue tech ones looked much better). Well, with the name Kim, I never got very many license plates with my name on them (as travel keepsakes) because they were always sold out LOL

  6. Birchwood Pie says:

Ha ha I runfess that if I’m on the fence about a race, I’ve totally used the shirt as a deciding factor.

  7. I’ve been taking care of newborns for almost 37 years and every time I see an unusual name or the parents spell a common name differently the first thing I think is, “they’ll never find a keychain or magnet with their name on it”! The tin is fantastic!

  8. kookyrunner says:

The Williams Sonoma peppermint bark is one of our favorites too! The Williams Sonoma store in our mall closed this year so thank goodness for their website!

  9. That peppermint bark is one of my faves too – your tin is adorable!

The CB shirt would give me pause too LOL. Richmond is on my short list for fall half marathons. I have heard so many great things about that race but have never been able to get it work with my schedule.

And, please don’t get me started on shoe redesigns – I feel like every time I fall in love with a shoe the following year the design is changed 🙁

  10. Of course everything had my name on it! But I rarely bought stuff with my name. My husband rarely finds stuff with his.

We don’t really exchange gifts much mainly because we both pretty much buy what we want. Makes birthdays challenging.

Sorry to hear about the Mizunos. I hate what that happens!

I agree on the Cherry Blossom shirt. Wasn’t last years really good? That’s too bad. I’d love to run that race one year, but next year is not that year for me.

    • Coco says:

This is the first year I have not liked the shirt, but maybe it has broader appeal to guys who don’t want to have delicate flowers on their shirt?

As for the personilzed items, most of the things I wanted as a kid were junk, so I probably would have been just as disappointed if I could buy them, LOL.

  11. momn3boys says:

I bought TWO pairs of new running shoes that I don’t really need! First one was at the expo for the Savannah Rock and Roll Marathon. Altra Escalantes, in my size, and they were PURPLE. I had just recently bought my current pair, the one I ran the marathon in. I talked the guy into giving me a $20 discount because I had bought my last pair on Zappo’s for less. A couple of weeks later I found some Brooks Levitates on clearance at my local running store for $50. Yup, gotta get those too.

  12. Coco says:

You might as well stock up while you can! One reason my current pair lasted me a year is that I also had some Brooks that I wore for shorter runs.

  13. Catrina says:

That T-shirt! What were they thinking? I use ugly race shirts as pyjamas, but now I have so many, I’ll need to throw some out😬.
I’ve been lucky with my running shoes so far – they haven’t changed too much over the years. 😊

  14. I am a huge fan of William-Sonoma peppermint bark too! I buy it for myself as well 🙂 That is interesting about 2020… I have not given that too much thought!! I have not signed up for any races yet, but need to for motivation!!

  15. runswithpugs says:

I totally bought myself a gift. I had a Kendra Scott gift card, and so I bought myself a necklace. I didn’t know if we would really be having much of a christmas, so I even had them gift wrap it so there was something under the tree for me LOL.

I think I am going to enter the Cherry Blossom lottery next year. I don’t care if I like the shirt or not, it’s a race I really want to run.

  16. Farrah says:

Ooo, peppermint bark! I haven’t had that this year yet but I love it too! I might try to make some, haha. I’m still trying to find my other pair of running shoes somewhere in my parents’ house! (I need to add cardio back into my life.)

  17. I don’t care for the Cherry Blossom shirts either. Too bad because a “cherry blossom” race has such potential for really pretty shirts.

I love the you got yourself a personalized peppermint bark box!

  18. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says:

Love the peppermint bark and the custom tin is a really nice touch! I would love to do a Cherry Blossom Run again in a few years, I haven’t done it since the year we finally met! 🙂

I used to love the Mizuno Wave Rider’s but the last version’s fit was awful so I’ve switched back to Brooks…not sure what type of shoes to get next!

  19. Cari says:

Ugh. Not a fan of the cherry blossom shirt. I’m glad I have some wiggle room for the transfer portal on that one so I can see the state of the knee.
I feel yoy re: lack of personlization. My cousin, also an impossible find, bought me a custom Coke bottle a few years ago. Our Williams Sonoma had no bark this year. I was sad.

    • Coco says:

What? No bark? I didn’t make it into a store but my friend said they were giving out samples Thanksgiving weekend. I certainly hope your knee is fine by April!
