August Angst

I felt off-kilter and out of sorts this week. Maybe because it started with a day trip to NYC. Or because my husband ended up in the ER on Tuesday (he’s OK). Or because, after being in overdrive for two weeks, I had nothing pressing at work.

It’s weird making a day trip to New York City. I miss out on all the city has to offer–no run in Central Park, no window shopping along Fifth Avenue, not even an off-Broadway show. I spent twice as much time on the train as I did in my meeting, but it was worthwhile to be there in person.

During a break, I gawked at the luncheon being held on the rooftop patio below. I’m pretty sure there was a bartender under the red umbrella, and people playing ping pong along the wall closest to me.

It’s also weird to get home at 7:30 pm–barely later than usual–having traveled so far in a day. I was surprised my husband hadn’t eaten dinner yet, but he said his recurring stomach ache was flaring up again. It got really bad later that night–bad enough that he went to the doctor on Tuesday. From there, he was sent to the hospital for a CT scan, and that’s how he got admitted to the ER–with a kidney stone. 🙁

Luckily, he didn’t have stay long. We’re not even sure why he was admitted–maybe they had to keep him somewhere until someone could write up a treatment plan?

Weekly Run Down

Despite taking a rest day Monday, I still ended up with seven workouts, since I doubled up on Wednesday. That second Wednesday workout may have done me in. My legs were so tried the rest of the week!

Monday: ~Rest Day~
With a 7 am train, I didn’t have time for a morning workout. I did get my steps in somehow.

Tuesday: Cyclebar
After so much time sitting on the train (3 hours each way) it felt good to move my legs!

Wednesday: Strength Workout + Orangetheory Fitness
I did a solid strength workout in the morning, but when work was quiet in the afternoon, I snuck out early to check out a “signature” Orangetheory workout called Follow The Leader.

As discussed in great detail on the Orangetheory Reddit page, the workout was designed for 3G classes, and didn’t go over well in smaller classes, where it was more like “Bring Up The Rear” — as soon as the last person on your team completed the rowing distance you all ran 0.1 miles at an “all out” pace. People complained because that meant the slowest person never got a break–the others could walk on the treadmill until the last person finished rowing. My team was pretty evenly matched, and I noticed that we all made the transition from rower to treadmill more slowly as the rounds progressed. The floor workout also was insane, with a whole lot of burpees.

Thursday: Corepower Yoga
Our peak pose was headstand. I thought it was going to be impossible, but after Ann spotted me once I could get into the “egg” shape for a second on my own. Her advice to walk my legs in as much as possible before trying to pull up made a big difference.

Friday: 5.3 Mile run
My legs felt like lead every step of the way, so I stopped frequently for photos. I took the three photos on the right (Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, White House) from the sidewalk around the Washington Monument.

Saturday: 18 mile Arlington Conte’s Ride
It was great weather for the “easier” Arlington Conte’s Ride, which still has enough hills to make me short of breath.

Sunday: 6 mile run
I promised myself I’d start running more in August to get ready for a 10 miler at the end of September and Half Marathon in November. To get an idea of what I should do to ramp up again, I consulted Chrissy’s 10 miler training plan. Counting backwards from race day put me at week 5, which called for a 6 mile run.

The weather was perfect, but my legs still felt like lead. Even my Garmin agreed this was a sucky run.

Seriously, how discouraging is that?

Does your Garmin pi$$ you off sometimes?

  1. I do not have those settings set on my Garmin maybe that’s a good thing for me. I don’t think I would like those updates. Which half are you doing in November?

  2. Marcia says:

My Garmin’s been telling me that quite a bit lately, I hate to say. It is discouraging for sure. Sorry the week was a stressful one. Glad your husband is ok, Kidney stones are no joke. I too would be riveted to that roof top. Looks like fun!
Typically I admire the creativity of OTF workouts but that Follow the Leader one sounds like a hot mess.

  3. kookyrunner says:

So glad to hear that your hubby is okay!

I didn’t go to OTF that day so missed the Follow the Leader workout. Based on your description, I don’t think I would have liked it that much.

  4. I hope your husband is feeling better! It sucks to not know what’s wrong.

I miss the monument run! I wish I could do that route more often. It is definitely a gorgeous route.

  5. I think your Garmin needs an attitude adjustment (or better “bedside” manners). I don’t know if mine has those settings available…but it did only give me credit for 30 calories burned after doing 30 flights up (and down) on the stairway last week LOL

  6. therightfits says:

Glad your husband is okay! I have heard that kidney stones are pretty painful. 🙁

That OTF workout sounds intense- yikes!

I have a similar Garmin and I hate when it tells me I’m running at “-2” or something, on a hot humid day. So rude 🙂

  7. Rabbit Food Runner says:

Glad your husband is ok! I once had to take my roommate to the ER for a kidney stone – they’re so painful for such a small thing! Garmin’s unproductive notification bothered me so much that I turned it off. It would really mess with my head.

    • Coco says:

The notice may be the kick I need to take it easy. If I won’t listen to my body, maybe I will listen to my Garmin? 😉

  8. Garmins! Ugh! We had just finished a 50 mile bike ride and waiting to lock our bikes when the lady in front of me had her Garmin say “move”. Her reply to that was F@&! You, I just rode 50 miles! Lol

  9. OK I don’t think I would do well with that kind of attitude from my Garmin! LOL!

So glad to hear your husband is OK!

  10. Cari says:

    Glad your husband is OK
oh ping pong on the roof – I thought when you posted this to FB or Insta that it was along the wall adjacent to your meeting. I can read I swear.
My Garmin luckily doesn’t tell me that. It just rates the first half mile or so on a positive or negative scale. I’ve never understood that as what does the half mile mean? Dumb gadgets

    • Coco says:

My Garmin does that too, but I don’t usually look at it. I assume it’s a measure of how hard you’re working, but have no idea really!

      • Cari says:

I have a Pavlovian reaction to it buzzing so I look at it and go “oh yeah, that stupid thing”
If I run with my phone at all, it’s in airplane mode so it sometimes catches me off guard if it finds WiFi and watch starts going nuts. Ut’s how I heard about Epstein Saturday

  11. Wendy says:

Man, I’m glad my Garmin doesn’t give me feedback! I’d probably cry every time I run these days… congrats on working on that headstand. I tell you, once you go upside down, you’ll want too do it all the time!

  12. What the heck kind of watch tells you you’re unproductive?! LOL. I’d be angry at my watch if it told me things like that. For real though, runs where your legs feel like lead are just the worst, mentally and physically!

  13. What a week you had, Coco! I’m glad your husband is okay and it’s ‘only’ a kidney stone. It does seem weird that they admitted him. I haven’t been to New York in a number of years but will be there for the marathon this year. We’ll have a few days to explore and have fun, so I’m grateful for that. I absolutely love DC. You are so blessed to have such beautiful scenery for your runs!

  14. Laurie says:

Oh no! Your poor hubby! They can be so painful. I’m glad he’s ok. I think Garmin should change their algorithms. To label a training run “unproductive” is discouraging to runners. Love those yoga tights! 🙂

  15. Chaitali says:

I hope your husband is feeling better! That sounds scary. And my Garmin doesn’t give me those notices, thankfully 🙂 That would kind of discourage me from upgrading to a newer watch. But I guess it’s better to know than not know.

  16. Luckily I haven’t set my Garmin to tell me things like that, LOL! You gotta start where you are. Nice job getting it done.

I thought going to the city from here, a 3 hour train ride each way, was long enough! My niece commuted from Poughkeepsie, 90 min each way, for years (she now lives in SOHO).

I probably would’ve been PO’d at that OTF workout cause yeah, I’d probably be the slowest one.

  17. runswithpugs says:

Whoa! If my Garmin said I was “unproductive” I think I would stick it in the garbage disposal! RUDE!

I hope your husband is feeling better. That must have been so scary.

with all the stress you’ve been facing this week, it’s no wonder your legs feel like lead! If ever you needed to give yourself grace, I think this is the time.

  18. That’s a long way to travel for one day! I actually did that once- i took the train to NYC on a Sat morning and came back late that night. You got in a lot of workouts this week! Glad your husband is ok.

  19. That Orangetheory workout sounds intense – almost like a CrossFit WOD! Your week sounds like a really good balance of cardio and resistance training.

  20. Renée says:

ah last week doesn’t sound that great at all – I’ve definitely had these kinds of weeks. So sorry about your hubby having to go to the ER but glad he’s ok. I’ve done these day trips too that just seem such a shame to not actually get to enjoy the city as well – previous jobs had me going to London for meetings and Berlin once for a book signing (to be fair it was Howard Schultz and I worked for Starbucks at the time; they wanted representation from the AMS roasting plant, but still…). So much nicer when you can get a run in or enjoy a rooftop game of ping pong whilst sipping on a cosmopolitan…

seems like workouts went ok, got a good ride in, and even though your legs were like lead I’m hoping this new week is already showing signs of improvement!
