Making A Splash At Splash Cycle

This week I finally tried Splash Cycle–the latest fitness craze to hit a swimming pool near you. Have you heard of it? It’s like indoor cycling, but it’s outdoors, under water!

My Splash Cycle adventure started as all great fitness adventures do–with a friend and a Groupon. We started making plans while chatting after a ride at CycleBar, and miraculously it only took 12 text messages to figure out a class that worked for both of us.

Making A Splash At Splash Cycle

Splash Cycle is offered at two locations near me–a hotel in D.C. with a rooftop pool and an apartment building in Crystal City (Arlington, Virginia) with a ground-level pool. We agreed on a 7 pm class at the Crystal City location.

After stalking the website for information, I decided to wear a bathing suit top and spandex shorts. (If I go again, I’d just wear a bathing suit.) Swimming shoes are required, but they provide them for no charge if you don’t have any. I brought a towel and a change of clothes for afterwards, and a water bottle I didn’t end up using.

“Come on in, the water’s nice!”

It was a warm evening, but the humidity wasn’t too oppressive. Of course, it’s always nicer by the pool. 🙂

Our instructor gave us an overview of the bikes and explained the three basic positions we would be using–seated, standing up straight, and standing leaning forward. She also explained that we would do arm exercises under the water, and that we could create more or less resistance by making our hands into fins or fists or spreading our fingers wide.

There were about 12 people in my class–all women, but of varying ages and fitness levels. We had a good time as we pedaled and splashed through a 45 minute workout. I found it harder than I expected to pedal–water resistance is no joke–and between that and the buoyancy provided by the water my heart rate stayed in Zone 1 on my Garmin. I think if I had better technique I could have gotten a “better” workout, but I enjoyed being active after work, outside in a pool, at my first Splash Cycle class.

Weekly Wrap

I’m linking up with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap, so here’s a run down of the rest of my week.

Monday: Orange Theory Fitness
I hadn’t been to OTF in a month, and wasn’t sure about buying another pack of classes. I certainly hadn’t missed that 4:15 am alarm! But, the class was awesome and reminded me why I love it so much, so I went all-in and bought a 30-pack. It’s odd to think that if I go once a week it will last me into March.

Tuesday: CycleBar

Wednseday: 3.5 Scooby Miles + Splash Cycle
I was feeling sore and stiff Wednesday morning, so I opted for a shorter run so I would have time to stretch and foam roll afterwards–and I even did it!

Scooby Miles

It’s totally dark before 6 am now.

Thursday:  Strength Workout

Friday: CPY2 at Core Power Yoga

Saturday: Conte’s Hill Ride (22 miles)
I wanted to get in one more hill ride before the Reston Metric Century next weekend. There’s a new course this year, but I’m pretty sure it still includes the biggest hills. This time my bike didn’t make an annoying noise (yay!), but the lowest gears felt “off” so I asked the Contes mechanic to check it out. He found a few adjustments to make, so I hope it’s all set now!

Biker Chick Contes Hill Ride

We had a big group, but my friend got this solo shot of me
during the 30 seconds I was in the lead. 😉

Sunday: 4.6 Scooby Miles
I didn’t have a lot of time for a run before church, but since Scooby got me up at 5:15 we did have time for our usual loop.

Scooby Miles

Only one death-defying squirrel sprint!

  1. too funny I saw that email about classes today and I almost texted you to see if you wanted to go. Then I got lazy and went to yoga instead. I’ve found that the pool running is way harder than I expected as well. I’d love to try the splash cycle as well I bet it is hard to pedal under water.

  2. Wendy says:

I think I’d like that Splash Cycle class! I do love some water sports. I don’t think we have that here. I bet it’s a great workout.

  3. kookyrunner says:

Congrats on a great week of workouts and hoary to see that Scooby is still enjoying your runs!

Wow – that Splash Cycle class sounds awesome! You know how much I love spinning and this is definitely a different take on it, lol

  4. I hadn’t heard of splash cycle until I read your post. Do you think it will last or is it just a phase? I think people though spin classes were just a phase when they started years ago…

I may see you in Reston next weekend. I’ll let you know if I plan on going. I’d originally hoped my new bike would be in by then, but it’s not expected to arrive until sometime in September.

    • Coco says:

Oh, wow, that’s a long wait for your bike! I’m pretty sure splash cycle is a fad — although it could catch on as a class to take year-round at indoor pools.

  5. Marcia says:

That cycle class looks so SO cool! I’ve heard of it but have no idea if there’s anywhere around here where it’s offered.

  6. I have never heard of a splash cycle class (of course, Iowa is usually a little late in getting new things LOL). That looks fun!

  7. I haven’t heard of Splash Cycle (I’m on the Eastern Shore, also a little behind the cities, haha). I would totally try it!

  8. This class looks like a lot of fun! When you can’t run, cycle! – SCott

  9. Liz Dexter says:

I hadn’t heard of splash cycle. I’m wondering about the effort of putting the bikes into the pool each time. And do they feel stable? Sounds fun, though! Wonder when it will come to the UK. I think we’re still on HIIT as the latest craze but who knows. I need to try more classes as well as my new strength training (I haven’t started yet) so will report back!

    • Coco says:

The bikes are pretty light – we helped pull them out after class, and stable enough — not as rock solid as in a studio but not wobbly.

  10. I really don’t think I’ve tried anything super crazy. It’s not in my nature! Just becoming a runner was crazy for me. 🙂

Good job getting in the foam rolling! I’ve been slacking on it just a little bit lately. Can always feel the stiffness the next day if I don’t.

  11. Chaitali says:

How funny, I’ve never heard of splash cycle but it sounds like a lot of fun! I’ll have to see if they have one in Maryland.

  12. I’ve been intrigued by these classes. I’ll have to see if there are any around here.

  13. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says:

Wow this sounds like a really cool class! I’d love to try it sometime, too bad they’re not in Philly!

I didn’t’ realize you had another big cycling race coming up…that’s a great solo shot of you!

  14. This is super cool! I haven’t seen anything like this by me. I think it’s always fun to try new twists on old classic, especially a classic like spin!

Glad you were able to get your bike checked and everything is in great order for the big race! You’re going to do great!

  15. Lesley says:

That’s the craziest fitness craze I’ve heard of. My first thought was I know those bikes can’t need electricity.

  16. I’ve read about this splash cycle class many times and I’ve always wanted to try it. Of course, Mississippi would be the last state to get something that cool ….both literally and figuratively. Lol

  17. I was interested in that splash cycle the instant you posted that on IG. How fun! I want one of those bikes for my pool here at home!

  18. HoHo Runs says:

I have not heard anything about Splash Cycle. The first thing I thought of is…rust. LOL. How do you stay on your seat and not float up? I’m glad you were able to get one more ride in before your Metric. I hope your bike got the adjustment it needed. Thanks for linking!

    • Coco says:

Hmm. I guess between having your feet hooked into the pedal (in big loops) and holding on the handle bars, floating away wasn’t a big issue. The metric will be my longest ride for my new bike!

  19. debolton says:

I would imagine it would be deceptively hard. Spinning is hard for me this would be a challenge

  20. Organic Runner Mom says:

Not sure we will ever get that where I live but looks amazingly fun! What will be the next fitness craze?!?

  21. Oh my goodness, that class sounds SO fun!
I would def love to try one like that someday!
    Have an amazing week!

  22. interesting class! I *think* the pools offer it here too but it just seemed so odd to me that I never looked into it. Also making fins? haha! Maybe I will feel more like a mermaid if I did splash cycling! ha!

is this your new bike that was making noise and needing adjustments? is the metric century ride then 100KM?

  23. The Splash Cycle class is a very interesting concept. I’d love to give something like that a try sometime.

  24. The Splash Cycle sounds difficult but pretty fun too.
