The Best Laid Plans

The first weekly wrap of the year should be filled with reports of awesome workouts inspired by New Year’s Resolutions, goals for 2018, or just the drive to get back to it after the holidays, but that’s now how the first week of 2018 went down for me. You know what they say about the best laid plans ….

Words of wisdom on the slopes!

Weekly Wrap

My best laid plans for this week were to get in my studio workouts (Orange Theory, CycleBar, and CorePower Yoga) before we headed to Park City for a long weekend of skiing. By the time we boarded our plan, I had only made it to one of those studios—although I did go there twice.

January 1 started off strong. I went to the very first Orange Theory Fitness class of the year at my studio, and it was a great workout.

OTF Jan 1

But my car told me that my “battery [was] discharging” and that I should “recharge battery” which was not a good sign. After some research on-line, we determined that my car needed a new battery, which meant I would have to drive our old Tahoe until I could get my car fixed.

My original plan for January 2 was to go to yoga since I’d miss my usual Friday class, but my car issues made that complicated. When I go to yoga I don’t get to work until after 8:00, and I wanted to get in early so I could leave early to drop my car off. So, instead of yoga I did a strength workout at home, focusing on moves we hadn’t covered in OTF on Monday.

January 3 I was back at Orange Theory. While that first 4:15 alarm of the year was tough, I was glad I wasn’t running outside since temperatures were still in the low teens.

On January 4 I was supposed to go to CycleBar for a friend’s free birthday ride class (I think it is so cool that they do this!) but I hadn’t set my alarm correctly, and didn’t wake up until too late. 🙁 That probably worked out for the best since we had gotten a few inches of snow (enough to delay the federal government and close all schools!) and I was able to wrap up a work project that had to get done before I headed out for vacation. I briefly considered a mid-day OTF class, but decided a rest day was in order.

That’s because the rest of the week—January 5-7–was spent skiing! The snow conditions were not fantastic but the weather was great—so much more pleasant that it was for our trip last year.

Did you know you can track skiing on your [amazon_textlink asin=’B0734NCF6X’ text=’Garmin Fenix’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’runniwithpers-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’919efe83-f2e8-11e7-9622-f5b041420ba0′]? I learned that my favorite run is about 1.25 miles long and I averaged about 12 mph.

I’m linking up with Holly and Wendy (and missing Tricia!) for the Weekly Wrap.

How was your first week of 2018?

Have any of your best laid plans gone awry already?

  1. That’s fun that you can track skiing on Garmin too. Hope you are having a great time. You sure picked a good week to be out of town

  2. Wendy says:

Oh what a fun week! You got to ski and miss all the weather drama!

  3. That’s pretty cool that the Fenix will track skiing! You are so good about getting up early to get to OTF!

  4. HoHo Runs says:

I’m so jealous of your snow skiing! I’m glad you had good weather. We’ve never been to Park City but I would definitely like to ski in Utah. I tracked a few of my CO ski runs with my old Garmin last year just to get the length, my HR and the elevation info. It was pretty interesting. I hope you can make all of your classes this week! Thanks for linking.

    • Coco says:

Park City is a really nice place – something for everyone! I need to get back in the groove but I’ll be shaking off vacation and jet lag this week.

  5. Kim G says:

That’s awesome that you went skiing this week – at least you had some fresh snow on the slopes!

  6. Oh yes…the good old “Best Laid Plans” theory. Precisely why I don’t set long-term yearly goals LOL Glad you had a great time skiing!

  7. Teresa says:

Love, love, love Park City! Who knew the Garmin would track skiing! Sorry you didn’t get all your classes in before your trip but it looks like you’re getting tons of calorie burning skiing in!!! Have Fun!

    • Coco says:

I remembered noticing it when I first got my Fenix, but I also saw a Garmin ad on one of the ski lift map insets which reminded me! 😉

  8. carla says:

    SO SO SO FUN.
Im a scared skier BUT wanna snow shoe this year.
    A lot lot.

  9. My year was off to a tough start too due to the weather and being sick. It’s tough to have that beginning of year motivation when things keep getting in the way!

  10. Christy says:

I haven’t been skiing in almost a decade! I never was an adrenaline junky and always stayed on the easiest runs anyway. Great week!

  11. Great job! I wish I could ski – I tried years ago and I was TERRIBLE! I’m glad the weather conditions didn’t cause issues with your travel!

I’d love to try OTF once…see if I could survive!

  12. Darlene says:

Not great. Not ONE run outside. Just some short poorly done indoor runs.
    There’s only another week.
Hope both of ours improve as the year progresses.

  13. Darlene says:

    Always not *only

  14. I wish I could track my skiing on my Garmin. It’s just under “other” workout. But last week, I too tracked my runs on the hill…fun to look at the speek and km traveled!!

    • Coco says:

It is fun to see those numbers. It’s also interesting to see how much skiing time I get once the lift time is subtracted (and the lines weren’t very long).

  15. Marcia says:

Hooray for some fun on the slopes and a break from this brutal weather. Plenty of time to get back to your usual badass fitness routine. : )

  16. Vaness says:

Did not know you could use Garmin Fenix to track your ski runs. Will definitely give it a try!

  17. Denise says:

My first week has gotten off to a slow start. Still struggling with plantar fasciitis, ugh! Then tweaked my back. But all is good this week! Hoping to get some local skiing in this year. Wish I could go to Utah!
Do you love OTF? It just seems so pricey.

  18. Lesley says:

I’m waiting for the days to get longer so I can run outside again. The sun is almost down by the time I get home, since the mountains block it. I’m itching to get outside again.

  19. How cool you can track skiing on your Garmin. I used to ski back in the day, noe it kind of scares me. I recently downloaded an app on my Garmin that is similar to what you use for the Orange theory workout. But I am confused what those colored boxes mean close to those numbers?

    • Coco says:

The colors match the different heart rate zones. The goal is a bell curve with 12+ orange/red, but I never get my HR up that high for that long!

  20. Jenn says:

    Love all your workouts!

I had some skiing during the first week of 2018. I don’t know how many miles I actually completed, but I was darn tired when I was done! It’s been so long since I participated in any snow/winter sports, and it was something to get used to.

    • Coco says:

I didn’t get too tired, but I did get hungry! I figured I earned my trail mix — including the chocolate pieces. 😉

  21. Toni says:

I love my Garmin Fenix and I love you can track skiing, even though I dont ski…Looks like a great week!!!

  22. Andrea says:

I love Park City! I’m glad you had a great week. The snow in Colorado has been disappointing. >:(

  23. Jessica says:

That first early alarm after a break is always rough!! I felt the same way last week. Good for you for still getting activity in even when things didn’t go according to your plans!

  24. Skiing is a great workout! Although I don’t ski. And Park City was so pretty — even in the summer. I can only imagine in the winter.

I’m actually doing pretty good with goals right now, especially with lessened activity.

  25. Renée says:

I’m so curious about Orange Theory. We have nothing like that here. Also, gyms don’t open that early here. And there are no 24 hour gyms. I can’t even imagine!

My first week was great! The only plans that didn’t go the way we expected was on Sunday – the husband and I ran/biked 21 km, then I ran 10km back (and he biked) and the plan was we would then switch 2 more times to get home. We gave up after MY run – it was cold, we were ill prepared and body parts were frozen!! We ended up putting the bike on the train and taking the train home! We learned to be more prepared next time!

    • Coco says:

It sounds like you made the right decision! No workout is worth risking frostbite!

OTF is very popular around here, and the early classes are always full. If you get a chance to try out a studio you should give it a whirl.

  26. What a way to start the new year! I hate dealing with car issues. Sounds like the ski trip was a blast!

    • Coco says:

Yeah, it’s such a hassle, but I am lucky my car warned me that the battery was low instead of leaving me stranded. 😉

  27. Sara says:

I’m still working at getting back in to a routine! You had a great week of workouts. How funny the new garmin can track skiing too?! Hope you’re having a great week!

  28. Clarinda says:

Sorry about your car battery, but at least it’s a relatively easy fix. Looks like you had a fun time skiing. That definitely makes up for the best-laid plans going a bit awry. 🙂

    Have a great week!

  29. I’m jealous that you were able to escape this brutal weather. Skiing sounds much more fun than dealing with snow, sleet, and ice.

  30. Coco! I’m sorry this is so belated but THANK YOU for the card & Starbucks gift card from the Fairytales & Fitness blogger Christmas exchange. I do loooove Starbucks so it has already been put to good use. 🙂
I’m planning to follow along with you this year & hope to join one of the coffee dates soon!

  31. Mark Jr. M. says:

I was at Park City last year. There are smooth ski routes. It would be tired if you want to ski on all the routes. It seems that you had an awesome weekend. I’m glad you had good weather. may be next year, i will go to Park City again 😉
