November Runfessions

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and didn’t stay out too late chasing early Black Friday deals. For some reason, I bet most of us in this corner of the web prioritized turkey trots over midnight door-busters. I also wonder how many of us will be runfessing how many miles we would have to run to burn off all the stuffing, mashed potatoes and pie? I like math, but not that kind!

If you’re curious too, make sure you waddle over to Marcia’s Healthy Slice for the November Runfessions link up. And every Friday check out the Friday Five link up at Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness.

November Runfessions

My first runfession is birthday related–so maybe I’m already exonerated. One of the things I did on my birthday was go shopping for new running shoes. I went to the running store planning to get a fresh pair of Mizuno Wave Riders, but since my plantar fasciitis is still hanging around, I thought I might need a bit more support and tried on Mizuno Wave Inspires. After testing out both models, I decided I didn’t have to choose!

I plan to use the Wave Riders for shorter runs and OTF,
and the Wave Inspires for long runs.

That brings me to my second runfession. About that plantar fasciitis. I know I should stop running and let it heal completely, but it’s not bad enough to make me give up my weekly OTF class or my weekend long run–or even to keep me from thinking about adding in a short run during the week. My chiropractor seems to be content to keep enabling treating me even if we’re mostly maintaining the status quo, although it is better to the point that if I weren’t already in treatment, I probably wouldn’t bother.

Speaking of weekday running, I runfess that I have no motivation whatsoever to run in the dark. I’m torn between adding another OTF workout to my schedule and running from work after it’s daylight. At least for now I should be able to get a few miles in before 7 am, and still make it to my desk by 8:00 without sacrificing my Starbucks time.

My fourth runfession is family-related. My Mom broke her hip last weekend (thanks for all the thoughts, prayers, and well-wishes) and as we made plans for her discharge and the possibility that I would stay with her for a few days, I runfess that I was looking forward to running in her neighborhood, which is near the Mount Vernon Trail.

amulance

We got to her house quickly, but decided to let the professionals transport her.
The paramedics, ER staff, orthopedist, internist, and nurses all were wonderful.

My fifth runfession relates to my November plank challenge. I decided to up the ante and charge myself $1 for every minute I miss, to be donated to a charity. So far I missed three days (5 min x 3 = $15) and decided to make a donation to So Others Might Eat through Heather’s fundraising page.

Why aren’t they getting easier?

I’d like to end with a new category–a rungression. During the Wilson Bridge Half Marathon, someone was running with music playing via the speaker of their phone. I may be the pot calling the kettle black since I have a tendency to disregard “no headphones” rules, but at least my headphones keep my music in my ears. His music was so annoying I wasn’t too disappointed when my paced dropped off just enough so I couldn’t hear it anymore.

Make sure you join Deborah and me for coffee next weekend–I’ll also be hosting my annual Christmas cooking bake-a-thon!

Hmmmm yeah those speaker people are so annoying. Your OTF exploits make me wanna possibly try it. Even though the last thing I need is another membership. Hope your mom is recovering well!

  2. Darlene says:

    Yes, don’t sacrifice Starbucks LOL

I can’t get motivated to get out of bed. So I run after work. Not usually fun esp in the dark.

I like your plank idea. I’d be rich.

  3. Wendy says:

Oh, I loathe those speaker people. Same goes for the people who talk on their speaker phones. Do I want to hear your conversation? No!

I hope your mom heals quickly and I hope your PF goes away!

  4. That is so nice that you made a donation. You can feel good knowing that is going to a good cause. I always run with headphones and sometimes sing along with my music. I have had runner look at me during races, but I always think if they are annoyed by it just run faster so you don’t have to be beside me…haha. I don’t know how I would feel if I had to listen to someone’s music though. I probably wouldn’t be able to hear it anyways if I had my headphones in.

I did have my Yurbuds in, but I keep my music low enough so I can hear ambient sound — like traffic, not someone else’s music! 😉

  5. Aw I hope your momma has a speedy recovery! I have worn the wave riders for years- love them. I get PF pretty bad about every 3 years like clockwork! When I get it, I stop running completely and get really good about stretching my feet. (I stretch my calves all the time cause my chiro told me tight calves can lead to PF) I usually have to give up running for about 7-10 days and then I ease back in VERY slowly so it doesn’t come back, so the whole fiasco is probably a month long thing. FREAKING PF!!!

  6. How was that half? I thought about running it but I’m nowhere near ready to run a half yet. And I probably would have smacked that guy. Or made a snarky comment. How rude!

Hope your mom is doing well! That can’t be easy to recover from!

    • Coco says:

It was a really low-key half, so it’s good from that perspective — you can sign up a few days in advance and arrive 1/2 hour before the start. If you need crowd support, it’s not the best although there were families out at various points along the GW Parkway, so it’s better than some local races.

  7. I just got a pair of the Mizuno wave riders myself and will be switching those in. Hope your mom is doing better and you got that all figured out. I like that plank challenge maybe I will join in. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving

  8. The Wave Inspire 8’s were the first pair of running shoes that I fell hopelessly in love with. I’m currently in the 12’s (I think), but I did have an innerlude with Brooks Adrenalines. I need all the support I can get (high arches and over-pronation to the extreme)

  9. I love that you bought both pairs of Mizunos 🙂

I like that you make a donation for the plank challenge. It’s crazy to me that these planks are not getting any easier!

Continued good thoughts to your mom!

  10. Karen @ Fit in France says:

Hope your mom is doing better. I hate running in the dark but I am lucky enough to work at home a couple days a week so I can wait until it is light out at 8 and still be at my ‘desk’ at 9. LOL Didn’t know about your PF. Hope you are on the mend. Have a nice long weekend !

    • Coco says:

Hmm, I’m not sure I could do that with my need for a long hot shower and lots of coffee! I have not been babying my PF like I should — just running through it. :-O

  11. HoHo Runs says:

We’ll be sole sisters as the Inspire is my shoe! I do not like listening to others’ music in a race. It gets my cadence all out of whack and I usually don’t like their choice of tunes anyway. I hope your Mom is doing OK!

  12. I’m so sorry to hear about your mom, Coco! How is she doing? I totally missed it. Thanksgiving & Lola’s dental pretty much kept me off of social media last week. Sending her some healing vibes & prayers.

I sooooo miss running to Vassar College when I visited my parents. There is really nowhere good to run where they live now, even though it’s beautiful. But hilly and narrow country roads.

My hat is always off to those who get up at o’dark thirty to run!

  13. Kimberly G says:

The wave inspires are my favorite sneaker – I hope you enjoy them!

I hope that your mom is feeling better.

  14. I need to try the Wave Rider 21’s! I ended up getting another pair of 19’s because I wasn’t in love with the 20’s.

I hope your PF issues subside…do be careful!!

And I hope your mom is recovering well from her hip injury.

  15. OMG! I am sorry to hear about your mom! Hope she heals quickly. Those speaker people are annoying. I rarely run with music and really have no need to also listen to someone else’ blasting on my run.

By the way, I also shopped for me. I love the Brooks Launch 4.

  16. Hope your mom is better now! I usually love running but I really hate to run at dark and I wait till it is lighted I have very busy schedule family and office but still I continue my running. God bless your mom. She will be fine very soon.
