October Controversies — Ultimate Coffee Date Link Up

Welcome to the October Ultimate Coffee Date Link Up, where all are welcome, whether you like pumpkin spice lattes or loath them. Our goal for this link-up is to give people an opportunity to share what’s going on in our lives, so we can get to know each other better and support each other in all our endeavors. Since it’s no fun to have coffee alone, make sure you leave comments on other blogs in the link up, and don’t forget to visit my co-host Deborah at Confessions Of A Mother Runner.

October Controversies

If we were having coffee, I would have to ask: pumpkin spice lattes–love ’em or hate ’em?

I don’t usually get a blended beverage,
but I do love my grande-skim-one pump-PSL!

While I’m talking about Starbucks, has anyone tried the Maple Pecan Latte? I think I may try one with my next reward drink.

And, before I get off the topic of pumpkin beverages, what are your thoughts on “pumpkin” beers?

My first pumpkin ale of the season–a Dog Fish Head Pumpkin Ale.

The other controversy I’d like your opinion on, is Nature Chaos Scarlet, the new sculpture outside my office window.

You can see a more dramatic picture on Sequoia restaurant’s Facebook page.

From the artist’s webpage:

Quinze comes to Washington with this project to deliver a clear intent: to activate a discursive exchange and critical engagement with the landscape and to encourage the restoration of balance between culture and nature. The sculpture base is an elegant twisted column that splits up into three branches. This heavy masterwork, weighing 28 tons, was handcrafted in its entirety by the artist and his skilled team and attests to the high level of his metallurgic skill. Atop the sculpture is an assemblage of unique, sculpted organic forms. For the creation of this nest-like composition, the artist took his inspiration from nature.

I generally like modern art, abstract design, and bright colors, so I think I like it, but some of my colleagues really don’t. What do you think?

Tomorrow I have my second fall race of the season–and the second race I won’t be racing. Between my ongoing PF treatment, last weekend’s century ride, and a business trip that won’t get me home until late tonight, I’ll be lucky to make it to the starting line, but since it will be my tenth Army Ten Miler, I don’t want to miss it.

  1. So I am not a fan of the PSL. Firstly, just way too much sugar and calories for me I just can’t. Secondly, I think it tastes too artificial. Anyhoo, I have to go check out that sculpture in person jury is still out on that one. Hope you have a great race tomorrow and it’s not too hot. Great to catch up!

I’m going to be a negative Nancy this morning – I forgot that I don’t like PSL’s and ordered one this week, then I was quickly reminded why when I treat myself I get a skinny vanilla latte, yuck! I only like pumpkin pie so it’s a hard no to the pumpkin beer. The sculpture kind of looks like trash suspended in the air, but because I’m pro-sustainability that’s not a bad thing if it truly is repurposed objects. If the artist made those from raw materials then I’m not a fan. I seriously need to go for a run because apparently I’m super cranky this morning!

    • Coco says:

LOL. Yes, several people think it looks like caught trash. I don’t think they used repurposed objects for the sculpture, though.

  3. I’m not much for flavored coffees so I usually pass on the PSL but make up for it with a pumpkin muffin (which I fully indulge in while they’re in season!) I haven’t tried pumpkin beer – what did you think?

Not a fan of that sculpture – perhaps it plays better in person?

Have a great run tomorrow! And thanks for the link-up 🙂

  4. Pumpkin spice….don’t love it or hate it, its just ok. Great Coffee Date

  5. Farrah says:

hahaha, PSLs–such a polarizing issue! ;P I think they’re too sweet, but I do love hot drinks (mainly tea or lattes) during the fall! I’ve never tried the Maple Pecan Latte before!

  6. Interesting sculpture…..I like it (over all), but the art geek in me is kind of going, “Hmmmm?” The “balance between culture & nature” seems a bit “off-balance” to me….a whole lot of modern elements with shape of the tree (nature), but the tree kind of gets lost in the midst of all the color and pattern atop of it. Maybe that represents that there really isn’t a balance (?). Art certainly makes one think!

I love pumpkin pie and pumpkin bars, but am not a fan of drinking it.

  7. As I mentioned in my post, I’m not a fan of coffee or PSL. I’m usually a fan of modern, funky art, but I’m not so sure about that piece. I think I’d need to see it in person before I made my final judgement, though.

I hope you’re able to make it to the Army Ten-Miler. This was supposed to be my first year running it, but I’m going to be a DNS because of surgery to my leg two weeks ago. I’m so bummed since I’ve never run the race and I would have loved searching you out and meeting you!

    Thanks for the linkup!

  8. Teresa says:

I’m not a fan of pumpkin coffees but I love pumpkin muffins and have been baking them regularly the past couple of weeks. And since, I’m more of a wine drinker, I’ve never tried a pumpkin beer …but it is intriguing.

As to the sculpture …..I don’t have a problem with it as a work of art as much as I have a problem with the overuse of descriptive words the artist uses to describe it! Lol!

That would be a tough call for me, as well, regarding the Army Ten miler ….tenth time to run it is pretty cool and meaningful. But then there’s that PF to contend with. Tough one Coco!

  9. I hope your race goes better than expected! I don’t know how you do all that travel. Seriously. I know you get used to it, but still!

I don’t drink coffee or beer so no opinions, other than I think people have really gotten a bit unbalanced about pumpkin! No wonder we keep getting pumpkin shortages.

  10. I would tell you that I have never had anything pumpkin spice! I know I am in the minority but I am not buying into it!

  11. I like the sculpture personally, but I don’t really know why! haha

I myself can’t recall that I’ve ever had a PSL, but it’s possible I did once… I really can’t recall! I feel like maybe I found a “copycat” recipe on Pinterest years ago when they first debuted.

    • Coco says:

No need to justify your opinion on the sculpture! Do you like any flavored coffees? I usually don’t but PSL has got me!

  12. Barrie says:

I love that it’s officially “grande-skim-one pump-PSL”- love the psl acronym! I DO like them- one or two a season will do me- but I do NOT like pumpkin beer- hate it actually- I like beer, just not with pumpkin. Best of luck on your 10miler!

  13. i love all things pumpkin so a BIG YES to all of the above.

  14. Clarinda says:

I love PSLs and look forward to their return each year. 🙂 As for the maple pecan… have you tried it yet? I was excited about it, but I wasn’t a big fan. The flavor was a little too blah for me. Maybe my barista just didn’t do it right because I’ve heard a lot of other people rave about it.

I think I like the sculpture, too.
