Listening To Church Bells In Bremen

The market square in Bremen really is a central part of the town. It’s surrounded by several churches, lined with a few cafes, near the building that has one of the city’s two public restrooms (although using it will cost you 0.5 €), and, yes, the site of the city’s Starbucks. So, needless to say we spent a lot of time walking around and through the market square.

When my husband wanted to poke around the big department store, I decided that I would rather go to Starbucks people watch in Market Square. I got more of a treat than I had bargained for when the noon church bells started ringing.

I think there were at least three churches with bells ringing, plus the Glockenspiel House bells.

It was a cacophony of different melodies, but still pleasant to listen to.

The Glockenspiel House (originally a bank) is located on Böttcherstrasse, a quaint street off Market Square. It has 30 porcelain bells that play their “concert” at noon, 3 pm and 6 pm.

As the bells play, a section of the tower on the left revolves to reveal ten carved wooden panels depicting seafarers and aviators.  The history of the building, the bells, and the art is so fascinating. I love learning all these tidbits when I travel.

I love listening to the bells! It’s so cool that the tower spins like that. Something that seems so modern within something that is so old.

I feel so self-centered wondering how they could have figured that out “back then,” but there were a lot of great innovations before our time!
