Kitchen Remodel  — Before

First, let me remind you what my old kitchen looked like. It was a perfectly lovely kitchen that probably was updated in the 80s, except for the wall ovens which I think were original to the house in the early 70s. My main objective for the remodel was to take out the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, and get more enjoyment out of the beautiful bay window.

Kitchen Remodel  — Demolition

The contractor warned me that everything would be going on the first day, but I was still surprised to come home to a big empty space.

The one “unforeseen” complication was how hard it was to get up the old floor. They ended up tearing out the whole sub-floor and installing a new one.

Kitchen Remodel  — During

Once they got the old floor out, things moved pretty quickly. They put up a new ceiling (reducing the previous drop to a soffit along the exterior wall), new drywall, and installed the new floor. The next big thing was the cabinets, which they assembled on site.

The counters were installed while I was in Copenhagen, and there was a glitch with the cut-out for the range. They didn’t make it deep enough, so the range stuck out too far. Luckily they were able to re-cut the counter and slide it in a few more inches.

 Kitchen Remodel  — After

We are still working on the finishing touches, but have fully moved into our new kitchen and are loving it! I am particularly pleased at how well everything came together–did I tell you how much I love the floors?!–and glad that we hired a decorator to help us pick the paint color. I was thinking soft blues, but she suggested greens-Sherwin Williams Sea Salt for the kitchen and above the chair rail in the dining room, and Sherwin Williams  Oyster Bay for contrast below the chair rail.

All in all we are very pleased with our new kitchen. While the work seem to slow at the  end, the whole thing was done in about 2 months, which is about what we expected.

Now, can I get you a cup of coffee or glass of lemonade from our beverage center? Or some ice water from our new fridge?

Yayyy!! So happy for you and your new kitchen!! I’m so envious of your pantry and ahhh, those windows and all that counterspace! <3

  2. Very nice! As my mom would say, use it in good health.

Although I’m having pantry FOMO. Your previous pantry was actually larger than my current one, which we expanded when we redid our kitchen!

    • Coco says:

Thanks, I like that saying. 🙂
The most annoying thing about the old pantry was the louvered doors that didn’t close right, but you’re right, it was pretty good storage space in its own right.

  3. WOW! That remodel looks great!!!! I know you are happy! We did the outdoor kitchen last year and when they ripped the sliding glasses doors out there was no turning back! Don’t you love that wide open feeling? Enjoy it!

  4. Your new kitchen looks wonderful! I know it probably seemed slow to you, but 2 months is pretty good for all the work you had done. Remodeling my kitchen is the one thing I really want to do in our house.

Enjoy it! And thanks for the link-up 🙂

  5. Don’t you just love having light in your kitchen? Makes all the difference. Enjoy all of your new space and your coffee bar 🙂

  6. Your new kitchen is amazing! I’m so excited for you. That has to be the best feeling. Enjoy! Thanks for having us.

  7. Marcia says:

Your new kitchen looks wonderful. Sounds like things went relatively smoothly too. I did the kitchen in the past (not this house) and yes, it’s a huge undertaking. Thanks for the tour!

    • Coco says:

We’ve only redone bathrooms before – much less disruptive since we had another to use in the meantime!

  8. Your kitchen looks amazing!!!!! We have done a lot of major remodels (in all of our houses), and it’s fun but so stressful living in a mess for the duration. My husband likes doing these projects (mostly on his own), so they take much longer than if we’d have a contractor doing the bulk of it. Oh well…. 😉

    • Coco says:

My husband want to do this project – with his buddies – but realized marital bliss was a bigger priority. 🙂

  9. vicki says:

    Gorgeous kitchen! Enjoy it!

  10. Teresa says:

Wow, look at all that storage …floor to ceiling! It really is a beautiful kitchen and so open. I know you are enjoying it! Thanks for sharing the process and for the link up! 🙂

  11. Your kitchen looks wonderful!! I love the upgrades, glad it came out to your satisfaction! It must be a relief that the hardest work is complete!

  12. Megan McGown says:

I am super jealous of that pantry! What a beautiful remodel! We’ve done several projects. Our house is over 100 years old, so some of the updates have been unavoidable, but it’s all been worth it!

  13. Your kitchen looks so great! Congrats on the new cooking digs. 🙂

  14. LOVE IT. My parents did the exact same thing about 20 years ago and they now spend all their time in the dining area with tons of windows looking out over the yard. Glad you love it !

  15. Gorgeous! I love it. Remodeling is SUCH a pain, but to have such an awesome result must be amazing. I could use some space for my blog goodies in that pantry 😉 Enjoy it!

  16. Kristen says:

Such a gorgeous new kitchen! Sadly your old kitchen is more modern and updated than the one in our new house. It’s going to be a couple of years but I’m really looking forward to a remodel.

    • Coco says:

It really was a pretty good kitchen — but now it’s that much nicer. It took a few years for us to finally do it – so many decisions to make!

  17. Your kitchen remodel turned out beautifully! I’m so glad you shared so many pictures. We remodeled our kitchen in our previous house and the basement in this house. I love remodeling, especially when it’s finished! 🙂

    Thanks for the linkup!

    • Coco says:

Yes, now really is the best part! Some people love all the planning and deciding but that was stressful!
