Wrapping Up A Week With No Running

When I mapped out my training plan for the NYC Half Marathon, I knew I wouldn’t be doing any long runs this week, but I didn’t realize it would be a week with no running. Since my reason for not running is all good, I’m not stressing.

If anything, I think a long weekend of cross-training on the slopes could be just what I needed to refresh mentally and physically.

Weekly Wrap Training Recap

Since we’re still at Park City, I’m going to jump right to my training recap.

Monday: I almost rescheduled my 5:00 am OTF class–who needs to get up at 4:15 am on a holiday?–but since I was going into the office anyway, I knew it would force me to get an early start. Plus, I enjoy the smaller class size on holidays. Because of that, we spent longer on the treadmill than usual, so I did get in about 2.75 miles of mostly running. (I think we had two 1 minute walking recovery intervals). After 9 months of weekly OTF classes, my “push pace” is 7.5  mph and my “all out” pace is 8.0 mph–I’m still not used to seeing that 7:30 pace on the treadmill display!

Tuesday: Strength workout at home, based on a mash-up of my “favorite” workouts from Quick Strength For Runners (<<Amazon affiliate link — check it out!).

Wednesday: 50 min indoor cycling at CycleBar.

Thursday: Rest Day/Travel Day

Friday/Saturday/Sunday: Skiing! The lifts are open from 9am – 4 pm, and we pretty much maxed out the skiing time each day.

If you are wondering where winter is, we found it at Park City, Utah! It was snowy and in the teens and 20s on the slopes with fantastic skiing conditions.

This coming week I will be lacing up my running shoes again–I have my first race of the year on Sunday–the Reston 10 Miler!

  1. You know it’s fun to take off of running every once in a while and mix it up! Your trip looked fun

  2. Marcia says:

What a fun trip! I haven’t gone skiing in years. Good to know winter is somewhere….not here…

  3. Ahhhhh you found winter. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

  4. Looks like a fun trip! You have such a solid base (and are such a consistent cross-trainer), you have nothing to be worried about with your 10-miler. πŸ˜‰

  5. Sherry says:

Skiing is great cross training! I haven’t been on the slopes in a while and miss snowboarding. Have fun and good luck on your first race of the year!

  6. Carla says:

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVED THE PICS YOUVE SHARED TOO.

  7. I can’t think of a better way to cross train! Although I haven’t skied since my 20s–I won’t lie, I’d be a little nervous! Is it just like riding a bike?

  8. Glad you had such a great time! You always find a way to stay active. And good luck this weekend!

  9. Lesley says:

Winter is in the Colorado Rockies too. It’s gorgeous seeing all the snow on the mountain tops, but I’m fine with limited snow in Boulder. The city doesn’t plow, and it’s a mess to deal with.

    • Coco says:

I had no idea Boulder doesn’t plow! My daughter lives in Longmont and I think they do some plowing there – or at least I hope they do!

  10. I used to love skiing but haven’t done it in many years. Now I am almost afraid to go. Knowing my luck I’d wipe out and be out running for awhile. I do not want to take any chances, because I love running more than skiiing. But I bet it was fun to switch things up and do something different you do not usually do on a daily basis!

  11. Chaitali says:

Oh wow, that is a lot of skiing and it sounds perfect for cross-training! Sounds like you had great conditions for skiing too.

    • Coco says:

The snow was AMAZING! I wouldn’t have minded a few more degrees of warmth, but it only took one mid-day hot chocolate break to keep going.

  12. Amy Lauren says:

I found you on Courtney’s link up! Looks like you had a lot of fun skiing and I bet it was really good cross training. I think if you get the chance to take a trip or vacation, that’s a good reason to not run because you only have so many vacations and time to spend with those you love, and running is always there when you come back.

    • Coco says:

That’s a really great way to look at it. I tend to get caught up in my schedule and plan and need to remember that other things really are more important.

  13. Sounds like such a fun trip! I’ve heard skiing is great cross training too! It’s nice to have a break from running every so often too! Good luck for your upcoming race! Im racing this weekend too! πŸ™‚

  14. Madhuri says:

Sometimes, mixing it up helps both physically and mentally. I am still bad (read as terrible) in cross-training. Hoping to get back to it post my training cycle.

  15. II’ve getting in a full day of skiing, works your legs like crazy! I’d say a week of no running but other activities is great!

  16. HoHo Runs says:

So jealous! This looks like the perfect non-running weekend to me, with loads of strength training, cardio training and more importantly — FUN. There is still hope we may go to Monarch, CO during spring break. Fingers crossed. Thanks for linking, Coco.

  17. Zebra Girl says:

Good cross training!:) I was out in Park City for 2 weeks already this year! Snow is awesome this year! Enjoy the slopes!

  18. Beautiful snow picture! I am sure your body enjoyed the cross training and a little break from the miles πŸ™‚

  19. I’m heading to the slopes on Friday – Keystone, CO. I really wanted to go to Utah this year, but the flights were just too expensive vs Denver. For a family of four, it just adds up too fast! I am going to take my running shoes along and ger a few miles in, because it makes me a happier Mom, but I’m ignoring what my training plan says for those 5 days!
Looks like you had a lot of good snow in Utah. Woohoo!!

  20. It looks like you didn’t miss running at all and so much fun with cross training! Love all the snow pictures!
I have never been on skis, ever and I need to change that!

  21. What a great way to cross train! Just love Park City – I haven’t been there it years, but such great memories. Hope you had a great trip!
