Five Games We Like To Play

When my son was home from college we spent a lot of time playing games. He’s very good at strategy games and also seems to be very lucky, so it was quite a thrill when I was able to beat him. I know a mother shouldn’t gloat, but ….

The theme for today’s Friday Five 2.0 link up hosted at Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness is Winter Activities. While you can play these games any time of year, playing board games is a great way to have fun inside when it’s cold and dreary outside.

Five Games We Like To Play

One of my favorite games is Quirkle. It’s easy to learn and seems simple, but strategy and luck can make a difference. I also find the colors and feel of the tiles very satisfying.[amazon_link asins=’1933054395′ template=’ProductGrid’ store=’runniwithpers-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’ca8d2f81-daa8-11e6-9f89-4dac1ba033e1′]
A game that takes a bit more time is Ticket To Ride. We first played this at a friend’s house, but I got our own version in an attempt to minimize the number of times I have to play Risk. 🙂

Another family favorite is Mexican Train Dominos. The directions we have aren’t 100% clear, so we never play by exactly the same rules, but it’s a fun game that’s only mildly competitive–or we just haven’t figured out how to sabotage each other yet. 😉

I enjoyed playing Yahtzee as a kid, and it’s still fun, although I spend way to much time agonizing over how to fill out my score card!

My son is very good at Backgammon, so the night I kept beating him was a rare treat. I got amazingly lucky with the dice–rolling doubles just when I needed them–and came from behind a few times.

Other games we like are Set, Settlers of Catan, and Chess-my husband’s favorite.

  1. My husband and I love playing board games. Qwirkle is one of my very favorites! I’ve never played Backgammon though – I’ll have to try it!

    • Coco says:

Gosh, Backgammon is such an oldie! It’s fun though – luck and strategy and getting to send your opponent’s pieces back to their start!

  2. We used to play board games all the time! Now, not so much. Quirkle is fun. My mom got us all hooked on Apples to Apples.

  3. I Just packed away an entire tote of board games! Some we don’t play anymore but I just can’t bear to get rid of them! You’ve introduced me to some new ones!!!

  4. HoHo Runs says:

My MIL loves board games and card games…and well really any type of game. Dominoes is a favorite. There are so many varieties of that game too!

    • Coco says:

I used to be such a card shark when I was a kid. And when my kids were younger we played a lot of card games that I’ve forgotten the rules to!

  5. We love to play scrabble and have some serious family battles! Wish kids still played these games as much as we used to when we were kids

    • Coco says:

I think my son must have gotten into playing games with his friends, and was willing to play with us — although not with any drinking penalties he may have had at school. 😉

  6. Darlene says:

Love dominos and Left Right Center is fun with a group.

  7. I suck at most games, which might explain why we don’t play a lot of them . . . we used to play Scrabble occasionally, although I always lost, which is odd, since my husband can’t spell very well!

  8. My husband hates board games. That makes me sad because I enjoy them. I’ve never heard of Qwirkle. I’ve played Ticket to Ride and thought it was fun.

  9. My in-laws introduced me to Mexican train and I love it! We all play whenever we go on vacation. Thats pretty much the only game I play these days:)

  10. Rachel says:

I’ve never heard of Qwirkle! Sounds like fun 🙂

  11. Marcia says:

We do not have a regular game night but we do play from time to time. Most recently Apples to Apples. I was a huge Yahtzee fan as a kid too. Pictionary and Trivial Pursuit were big here back in the day as well.
