New Year, New Goals

Happy New Year! I hope you had a fun New Year’s Eve. I ended the year with a long run with a friend, MRTT meet-up, family brunch, afternoon nap, and quiet evening at home. I really wouldn’t have had it any other way, but now I am ready for the new year and some new goals.

New Year, New Goals

I shared a few New Year’s resolutions in my Runfessions post. My biggest goal for the new year is training for the New York City Half Marathon in March. My current plan is to continue to focus on cross-training (Orange Theory Fitness, indoor cycling, strength training), but extend my long runs to get in shape for the 13.1 mile distance, which is 5K longer than the 10 mile races that filled by 2016 calendar. I’m also committed to better nutrition, which will be easier with my son going off to grad school, but harder with another long business trip scheduled at the end of January.

Weekly Wrap

I spent the last week of 2016 hanging out with family and friends, relaxing, and getting organized for the New Year. Since we stayed home, I was able to keep up with my fitness routine.

Monday started bright and early with the smallest Orange Theory Fitness class ever–only five of us showed up for that 6:15 am class!

We doubled up on strength and spent more time than usual on the treadmill, so I earned lots of splat points. After that, I had brunch at one of my daughter’s favorite restaurants, exchanged a few Christmas gifts, and spent the rest of the day organizing our Christmas “toys.”

Tuesday started even earlier, since my daughter had a 7 am flight home. After dropping her off at the airport I went for a run around the Capitol. I wasn’t going to take any photos but who am I kidding I couldn’t resist having the Lincoln Memorial all to myself.

Since it was still early when I finished, I did a few rounds of Workout 3 of  Quick Strength for Runners (<< Amazon Affiliate Link). It focuses on lateral balance which I sorely need.

Later in the day I met a friend for lunch, returned another Christmas gift, and got a pedicure to get my toes ready for the new year. 🙂

Wednesday started with a 5:30 am ride at Cyclebar. I had sent an open invitation to my MRTT group to join me, and was astounded at the BAMRs who showed up to ride.

Even more remarkable–I think I’m the only one was heading into work afterwards. Everyone else got up early just to get away from their kids for this!

I worked a full day on Wednesday, but ended the day with a deep tissue/trigger point massage focusing on my calves, ITB, and hip flexors. Aahhh.

Thursday I did three rounds of Workout 4 of Quick Strength for Runners before heading into work. I spent another full day at the office, wrapping up everything that had to be done in 2016.

Friday I started my day “off” with a 6 am CPY 2 class at Core Power Yoga. The instructor led us through a slower flow than usual with a focus on hip openers–just what I needed. I also ventured into an arm balance that almost happened. Who knows what 2017 will bring!

Saturday I met my friend at 5:45 am for a long run, planning our route to make the multi-chapter Moms Run This Town photo at the LOVE sign in Falls Church. I also got my last photo entry for #RunChatHunt.

There’s a whole lot of Christmas going on there!

Later in the day we hosted my sister-in-law for brunch, although she did the heavy lifting by bringing a crab quiche. Yum! I spent the rest of the day relaxing, watching Orphan Black, and nibbling on the last of the Christmas cookies.

Sunday I started the New Year with a mash-up of Workout 3 and Workout 4 of Quick Strength For Runners. After church, I headed to Revolve for a surprisingly crowded New Year’s Day ride of mostly regulars.

The rest of the day was spent taking down the Christmas tree, cleaning the house, and making a vat of soup with the last of our Christmas ham.

  4. I’m always impressed when people show up for super early workouts on their days off. Of course, I tend to do the same thing so I guess it’s not that unusual…

    Happy New Year!

  5. Sounds like a really active week and a good start to 2017!

My house is in desperate need of cleaning, and I’m in desperate need of a massage. I must do better with that this year!

Kudos for sticking to a workout routine during a holiday week! Having a race on the calendar is always great motivation for that. NYC will be so much fun and I have no doubt you will nail it. I haven’t taken down the tree yet (or any decorations) and am seriously thinking about leaving it until after the marathon. My 2017 plans are currently on hold as well. Happy New Year, Coco. Thanks for linking.

    Happy new year!
I always feel silly blogging about new years goals, but it’s refreshing. Like a clean slate!

  8. Carmy says:

My goal for 2017 is just to be consistent!

  9. I am always so impressed at your dedication to workouts (most of which require drive time). I love that pic of the Lincoln Memorial!!

  10. How cool that you will be running the NY Half Marathon! That is a race I would like to run one year.

I love seeing pictures of running in DC <Love that place!!

  11. I am always impressed how you manage to get all your workouts done! I will be working on my goals this week as I reflect on 2016. Cheers!

  12. You did a great job staying on top of your workouts. I’m always so impressed by your dedication to get to an early morning class! You inspire me to cross-train more!

    Happy New Year!

  13. Darlene says:

I am so impressed with your workouts. You put me to shame.

You will love the NYX half. I have heard only good things about it. Someday I will actually get into the lottery.

I plan more of the same for 2017 – good health, lots of races, good times with family and friends.

  14. I really need to add cross-training this year. I focused more on running distances last year; now I need to work on my strength and flexibility.

  15. OMG–Christmas ham soup sounds amazing! I have been hooked on ground pork for my soups lately but ham sounds yummy.

  16. I need a coffee date to start off my year in the right direction too. Hopefully by then I will have my goals for the new year! I’m always so impressed with your activity. I don’t think your travel slows you down at all getting your workouts in. Sure wish we had an OT around me.

  17. I haven’t set any goals yet, that’s on my list to do this week. But I’ve made it a focus to do 2 x week more strength training to get my ankle stronger.

  18. Janell says:

Happy New Year! Strong start to 2017. NYC marathon is on my bucket list for sure. I know it’s a while away but I look forward to your race recap.

  19. Jenn says:

    Busy, busy!

It must be so cool to have so many great landmarks so nearby. And so many convenient classes. It gets tough to cobble together consistent workouts – the nearest OTF is 30 minutes from me; we have no spin studios; and our two “big” cities are still quite small.

One of these days, I’m going to get to run DC!

Happy New Year and keep up all the hard work!

  20. Best of luck with your training for the NYC half. I’m also back in training mode as of this week, but this weather isn’t helping my motivation. 🙁

  21. Wow – great job for keeping up such a busy schedule during the holidays! I find that the switcharoos on when you’re working, when you’re not, to throw off my workout game.
    Happy new year!

  22. Did I read that right, classes at 3 different gyms? Wow!
Happy New Year to you and your family!

Right now I’ve got active accounts at Orange Theory, Cycle Bar, Revolve and Core Power Yoga. And I used to never understand the attraction of studio classes. :-O
