Abundant Runfessions

It’s the last Friday of November, which means it’s time to come clean with our Runfessions. If we fess up now, does that mean we can get on Santa’s nice list?

I will not be runfessing how much stuffing and pie I ate yesterday, but since I do have five other things to runfess, I’m also joining the Friday Five 2.0 link up hosted by Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness.

1. Marathon Musings. I runfess that I still haven’t decided if I want to do a marathon next year. I have not entered the lottery for Chicago, and have pretty much decided that Chicago would not be the best choice for me. Doing Chicago would require training in the summer, race weekend itself can be warm, and I really don’t do well in the heat. So, now I’m debating a November marathon–Richmond or Philadelphia. If you have insight and/or a recap for either, please let me know in the comments!

2. Half-Marathon Musings. When I explain why 10 milers are my favorite race distance, I often say that half marathons are 5K too long. 🙂 That said, I runfess that I did put my name in for the New York City Half Marathon in March, so keep your fingers crossed that I get in.

CycleBar Calories3. Indoor Cycling Infidelity. I bikefess that I’ve been two-timing on my indoor cycling studios, going to both CycleBar (reviewed here) and Revolve (reviewed here). CycleBar is slightly less convenient for me, but I definitely think having the bike computer makes me work harder. On the other hand, Revolve has great instructors who lead me through workouts that I know make me stronger for hilly bike rides. I bought an introductory 10 class package from CycleBar for $99, but I don’t think I will be able to resist Revolve’s Black Friday deal of 20 classes for $196 (less than $10/class). (Locals, use code BlackFriday2016 at the Revolve website here.) Luckily for me, many of my favorite instructors are two-timing too, teaching at both studios.

4. Number Nonsense. Even though I find the bike computer at CycleBar motivates me to push harder, I bikefess that when my “calories burned” data was much lower than expected I had to fight off a “why bother” attitude. Granted, the number was so low I honesty think it was wrong, but I still shouldn’t let that number make me second-guess the value of what felt like a great workout.

5. Orange Theory Absenteeism. I runfess that after making it through Hell Week at Orange Theory Fitness it was nearly three weeks before I went back again. I was sick, traveling, and taking advantage of the free  “preview” classes at CycleBar. I finally made it back this week and have signed up for Monday classes through the rest of the year.

Writing this, I realized that most of my runfessions and dilemmas stem from an abundance of riches–or at least an abundance of fitness options. I guess that’s one more thing to be grateful for this weekend.

Deborah and I would be grateful if you mark your calendars and stop by the Ultimate Coffee Date Link Up next weekend–December 3!

Are you doing any Black Friday shopping today?

  1. No black Friday shopping for me!
I have been debating over the NYC half but am confused on how the whole lottery vs travel partner thing works. Also I know it’s going to be cold at that time of year so that is keeping me from moving forward with any plans!

  2. You could do Grandma’s with me in June. Just sayin’. A couple of us bloggers will be there… Duluth MN won’t be warm, hopefully.

No Black Friday physical shopping for me. Amazon Prime may be calling however. I too am debating a November marathon. It means I could wait until August to start training — which is a horrible weather month for Dixie, but at least just one month instead of 2 or 3. I saw your pies on Instagram. My oh my, they looked delicious!!

    • Coco says:

I can’t keep up with the Amazon lightning deals – I take too long to decide! August running can be rough, but then you appreciate when it gets cooler!

  4. I hear you about not liking to race in the heat. Happens to me way to often. And it’s only half the distance!

You are really lucky to have so many option so close to home.

  5. OOH hope you do get into the NYC half! I’d love to do a race there sometime. Hope you had a lovely thanksgiving!

  6. RICHMOND! I’m actually doing the full in 2017 because I had to defer this year. Richmond is great. It’s actually perfect for you because it’s a Saturday race so you can still have a weekend afterwards. Also – Wineglass is wonderful – but a six hour drive. I have a ton of Richmond related posts on my blog but you can start with this one http://eatprayrundc.com/tips-for-running-richmond/ – just search Richmond for a ton more! Hope you have a relaxing rest of your weekend!

  7. Marcia says:

Oooh yes runfessions of abundance are good. I’m bummed Chi is off your radar but you have a valid point about heat. Both Chis are ran were crazy hot.

  8. Rachel says:

There’s always MCM at the end of October! But you’d have to train in the summer. Or CLE in May — it’s the 40th this year! It’s not one of the big races but if you come I could show you around town. 🙂

  9. Fingers crossed for you getting into the NYC Half! I totally hear you being wary of marathon training during the Summer. I’m running the Berlin Marathon next September and am already dreading those super long runs in the heat. I haven’t run Philly or Richmond, but I did run NYC (also in November) and thought it worked out pretty well. I still struggled in the summer (Spring marathons are way better for me), but we had an unusually hot summer here!

  10. Tamieka says:

I have heard great things about Richmond..my only info…sorry.
Good luck on NYC half…I have heard good things about that race as well!!

Black Friday shopping for the kiddes but noone else today…all online..I cant with the stores!

See you for coffee next weekend!

  11. Karen says:

My hubby went and got a deal for me on a laptop. Mine broke awhile ago and I needed one.
I hope you get into NY 🙂
Of course I vote for Richmond, but you will be still be training in heat, the odds race day will be manageable heat wise are fairly good.
Richmond has course support and lots of distractions 🙂 I will be running the half…I already signed up.

    • Coco says:

Oh, cool! I’m actually debating doing half marathons instead – I’m debating everything. But I could do more than one destination half and could enjoy the cities on race weekend too ….

  12. Yes, Black Friday shopping, but we didn’t get in the car until 10:00AM (arriving in Des Moines around 11:00)…so the crowds were manageable 😉 And, yes…what Wendy said. Grandma’s in June will be fun! (cough cough)

  13. All the Black Friday marketing has come to France this year. I might hit up a store this weekend but people in France seem to wait until the last minute to shop for Christmas, so not sure if the marketing ploy will be a huge success.

  14. Overall I enjoyed the Philly marathon as a first-timer but it’s SO late in the season…I think I’d prefer a marathon earlier in November. I”m still on the fence of what I want to do next!

So many fitness classes, so little time! I’ll be starting up a bunch of classes through work again, I’m looking forward to it but still need to squeeze in running!

  15. vicki says:

Training in the summer heat was exactly why I chose a January marathon for my first!
