Summer Slump  Runfessions

It’s the last Friday of July, which means it’s time to come clean with some runfessions. Since August 1st isn’t until Monday, you’ll have to come back next weekend for our Ultimate Coffee Date Link Up–please mark your calendar and join us!

Runfessions Bacon

Since I’ve got five things to runfess, I’m also linking up with Courtney, Cynthia and Mar for the Friday Five Link Up. Check out both of these great link ups for motivation, support, and camaraderie.

1. I runfess that I have been eating a lot of bacon. I thought my business travel was over for the summer, but ended up with two trips to Miami in July and one more scheduled for next week. I’ve been staying at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Miami, and while it’s no luxury hotel they’ve got a surprisingly good menu at thier lobby restaurant. I usually have eggs and toast for breakfast, but when I travel I can’t resist ordering a side of bacon. Yum! And, now that my Mom’s tomatoes are coming in, I’m tempted to buy bacon for BLTs at home ….

2. I runfess that I have been slogging through treadmill workouts. On my first trip to Miami I quickly realized that I would not be able to run outside. It had been a while since I ran on a treadmill, so I almost enjoyed my first two treadmill workouts. Now that the novelty has worn off I have to be creative to stay motivated.

Treadmill Workout Incline Ladder

This week I did a “lap”-based an incline ladder workout, alternating laps (0.25 mi) at an elevated incline with laps at level 1.5, inching up the incline by 0.5 from 1.5 to 5.

3. I runfess that I am losing my mojo for Orange Theory Fitness. I started going to Orange Theory Fitness once a week in May, and while I still love it while I’m there, I do not love getting up at 4:15 to make the 5:00 am class. I am seriously considering dropping it, but trying to figure out if I’m just in a summer slump that I should wait out.

Orange Theory Fitness
Getting up at 4:15 once in a while for a flight is one thing,
but getting up at 4:15 every Monday is wearing me out!

4. I runfess that I do not love these new bike lanes. Last week my long run took me along one of my alternate commuting routes and I was shocked to see that the road had been completely reconfigured from a four lane undivided road into a two lane road with bike lanes. As a fitness enthusiast and cyclist I should welcome this change, but as a commuter who hates sitting in traffic ….

5. I runfess that I’ve nearly killed these flowers three times. I’ve told you that I don’t have a green thumb, but all these flowers need is water. Seeing them shrivel up in the heat is a good reminder to stay hydrated. 🙂

Wilted Flowers

Luckily I’ve noticed their sorry state in time to bring them back to life!

Flowers

Isn’t their recovery miraculous?!

  1. I’m loving everything about summer and am having a blast with all my outdoor activities. But I’m hating work this summer. For many reasons I won’t go into, work has become so stressful for me that I dread going in. Thank goodness I took a lot of time off this summer! I have been making the most of it, for sure!

  2. Marcia says:

I suspect that 4:15 wakeup won’t be any easier as our daylight fades. Mmmmmm BLTs. Yum! Thanks for linking!

    • Coco says:

Although when it’s dark whether I get up at 4:15 or 5, it’s not as noticeable that it’s dark at 4:15, if that makes any sense.

  3. I would never get up that early for a class!! I have been having a hard time running lately this heat is killing me. I am testing out elevate fitness this weekend very similar to OTF. See you for coffee next week!

  4. Chaitali says:

I think I’m just beginning to come out of my Summer slump actually and finally getting a bit more used to the heat. That is impressive that you are getting up so early for Orange Fitness. I’m with you that is a hard thing to maintain.

  5. I can handle getting up at 5 to run at 6 but earlier than that on a regular basis is too much for me. I’m not surprised your kind of over it! 🙂

  6. Those bike lanes like that would make me nervous. Both as a driver and as a biker.

    • Coco says:

Yeah, I don’t like riding in the road on my bike, especially on roads where cars are used to going fast and not having bikes around!

  7. HoHo Runs says:

Impatiens are notorious for wilting. At least they tell you they need water, right? I think 4:15 would feel awfully early to me. It’s staying darker longer in the mornings too — which wouldn’t make that any easier. As a cyclist, I don’t like bike lanes on busy roads.

  8. Ana says:

I have a black thumb! I just killed my third geranium in 2 years, and I’m giving up. I need a plant that will survive me!

    yums bacon!

  9. UGH. Driver & cyclist here too. My city recently did a similar thing, but there is just not enough bike volume to support it. They also took away a lane of car parking & now that whole area is a total mess. Honestly, I’ve not seen one cyclist use the lanes. So frustrating!

    • Coco says:

Yeah, this is a weird road to do it on because it ends at another big road with no bike lines, so I’m not sure what cyclists are supposed to do there.

  10. Oh my gosh 4:15 is e-a-r-l-y! I struggle some mornings getting up at 5:30, so I can definitely see how you could be over getting up at that hour!

  11. Laura Bowers says:

I’ve been so pooped all this summer that even the thought of 4:15 for a class exhausts me! And I’ve killed/brought back to life our Impatiens at least five times! They are hardy little suckers. 😉

  12. Sorry to see you’re going through a slump. Hopefully the 4:15 wakeups will get easier? I’m an early bird, but anything earlier than 4:30 is beyond my limits, I think! I love how you were able to bring your plants to life! I don’t have a green thumb either, it really deters me from getting into gardening. I have aloe plants that just won’t grow and it’s so frustrating!

    • Coco says:

Yeah, I have a scrawny basil plant that’s barely alive and friends have whole plots of basil! I don’t know what I’m doing wrong – or what I’m not doing that I should be.

  13. I had bacon and eggs today after my long run. 🙂

I don’t eat bacon all the time. For years I was eating more vegetarian and didn’t eat it at all. Then I decided maybe I needed more meat, and I realized how much I really like bacon.

I’ve swung back to more veggie again, but I still enjoy some bacon now & again!

  14. I kill every single plant, nothing survives in my house. So sad.
I am very impressed that you keep bringing yours back from the grave.
