Wrapping Up A Week Of Business Travel

I’ve had a lot of business travel already this year, and I am just about over it. I try to make the most of my business trips, but it’s still a hassle and exhausting. Monday I left my house at 5:45 am to catch a 7:00 am train to NYC, met with a client until 5:00 pm, grabbed dinner with my colleague, and then did work for other clients in my hotel room until 10:00 pm. It’s no wonder most of my reimbursement receipts are from Starbucks!

Can someone please get me a sign like this?

This week I spent Monday and Tuesday nights in New York City, Wednesday night at home, and Thursday night in Kansas City. I hate packing and unpacking, but it was pretty easy Wednesday when I just had to take out my dirty/worn clothes from New York and pack a new set of clothes for my conference on Friday. Of course, I always pack my workout clothes first! Here’s how I put them to use this week:

Monday: rest/travel day

Tuesday: strength routine in the hotel gym

Strength Routine NYC

I didn’t have the gym to myself but I did have the weights to myself!

Wednesday: 7 mile run to/in Central Park

Centtral Park run

I didn’t plan on running 7 miles, but when I got to the reservoir in Central Park I had to run around it. Those grey clouds gave way to rain before I made it back to my hotel, but seeing the last of the cherry blossoms was worth it!

Thursday: core strength routine at home

Friday: 2-ish mile walk to/from Starbucks in Kansas City

When I woke up Friday, I wanted fresh air more than I wanted to do a workout in the hotel gym. I wasn’t in an area conducive to running, but my Starbucks app showed me a Starbucks about 3/4 mile from my hotel, so I decided to walk there. My walk ended up being longer because the only sidewalk was on the other side of a busy road and I had to go out of my way to get to a traffic signal with a crosswalk. I love Starbucks, but even I will not risk getting hit by a car for a cup of coffee!

Saturday: 4.4 mile neighborhood run

May Neighborhood run

I set my alarm so I could squeeze in a short run before I had to be at the Patent Office for a Girl Scout event. I was volunteering at a workshop to help Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts get the new “IP Badge”. It was really fun to talk to girls about being inventors, protecting inventions, and our cool careers in science and law. 😉

Sunday: Orange Theory Fitness!
 Orange Theory Fitness

The OTF near me finally has opened, so I kicked off my Mother’s Day with a free class. I’ve signed up for two more this week (part of their grand opening offer), so I’ll tell you more about my Orange Theory experience in newt week’s Weekly Wrap hosted by Holly and Tricia!

I have one more trip to NYC this week. While I am looking forward to another run in Central Park, I am glad that it is the last of my business travel for a while!

Do you have any tips or tricks to make packing easier?

That Central Park run looks awesome. Also so cool about teaching the girl scouts about being inventors! Intellectual Property strategy is something I get involved with in my job. I never thought about those kind of things when I was a kid. Good luck with your trip this week!

  2. I would love that Central Park run! I’ve never run there–it’s definitely something I’d love to do.

  3. Karen says:

Well I know traveling can get old, but it is fun you get run in different places 🙂 Orange theory is new to me!
I roll my clothes when I pack 🙂

  4. You have been traveling a lot! That IP event sounds great I love that they offer that for girls. Hope you enjoy your OTF classes.

  5. Carla says:

ahhhh I wanna meet you in NYC.
The husband is there now and I think comes back….actually NO IDEA WHEN.

  6. No packing tips, sorry. Other than I love my packing cubes from flight101 — makes it very easy to organize things.

Business travel is hard. My husband used to travel for business a lot. Although it was good for me sometimes . . .

Way to get in those workouts!

I struggle more with deciding what to pack vs. fitting it all in. Especially when the weather is so changeable!

  7. Marcia says:

Ah Central Park runs are the best! And yes you have to circle the reservoir. So nice!

  8. I’ve never been to NYC but if I ever get to go I sure want to schedule a run in Central Park!
You always impress me with being able to get in your workouts even when traveling. Safe travels to you Coco have a great week!

  9. You have had a lot of business travel. Me too and it is going to last until about the end of June. Ugh. I had to laugh though about packing workout gear first. I ALWAYS do that !

  10. Tamieka says:

    Packing running/fitness clothes first…Priorities! LOL!!!

I find I do the same thing…everything else will have to find room in the suitcase!-LOL!

I have yet to run Central Park…my dad lives near prospect park, so I run there when I go visit but I want to get a Central Park run in on day.

Dang it!! I forgot about the free OTC classes!!!

    • Coco says:

It took me a while to realize that Central Park wasn’t too far from where I usually stay. This week I’ll be a bit closer and am hoping it’s not too rainy!

  11. impressive! You are really so good about exercising while traveling, you make it look easy! The Girl Scout project looks fun, I was a leader for 3 years, but I bet things have really changed. Have a great week!

  12. Your work schedule sounds very much like my husbands!
That’s cool what you are doing with the girl scouts. I teach an 8th grade class on entrepreneurship and right now they are “inventing” products. We are gonna simulate “Shark tank” at the end of the month!

  13. You have been on the road a lot, but it is nice you got to run in Central Park! Hope you trip this week is quick and uneventful! Safe travels.

  14. HoHo Runs says:

Running in Central Park with my sister is one of my fondest memories! I’d love to do that again. But, I find travel to be exhausting — even when it’s for fun. I bet you’ve seen some very interesting things in hotel gyms. 😉 I would absolutely always pack my workout clothes first, too. I do a lot of mental packing and make lists on my phone. When it’s time to actually pack – it’s not a big deal. I need the Starbucks sign! Thanks for linking with us Coco.

  15. Chaitali says:

Business travel is exhausting. But that run in central park looks beautiful in spite of the rain! I remember being a girl scout (and my niece is one now) and how exciting it is to get a new badge 🙂

  16. One of my dreams is to run through Central Park! So jealous!

  17. If anyone deserves that Starbucks sign it is you. At this point I am surprised they haven’t named a coffee blend after you:)

  18. Alison says:

I’m excited to hear what you think of Orange theory. One has just opened up not to far from my house and I’m kind of curious to learn more about them.
