Fending Off The Holiday Feeding Frenzy

This is the week of the year that I am tempted to give up on healthy eating, forget about balance, give in to the holiday feeding frenzy, and eat ALL the cookies. We had our first office party on Friday, celebrated my husband’s birthday on Saturday, I have a holiday party for a work-related organization on Tuesday, our second office party on Wednesday, and our neighborhood holiday party on Saturday. As much as I plan to make healthy choices, I’m bound to overindulge, so why bother?

Holiday Feeding Frenzy
That mindset used to make sense to me, but now I know better. Still, I need to remind myself to fend off the holiday feeding frenzy.

I need to remind myself that most of the food at holiday parties does not taste as good as it looks.

I need to remind myself that I won’t enjoy the holiday season if I am stumbling around in a carb-coma fog.

I need to remind myself that I will have a merrier Christmas if I enjoy nourishing foods that don’t send my blood sugar on a roller coaster ride.

The opportunity to review Big Slice products through Fitfluential came at just the right time, since they are the perfect snack for fending off the holiday feeding frenzy.

Big Slice
What are Big Slice products? Big Slice offers single-serving pouches of ready-to-eat cooked apples that are made with wholesome ingredients and are fat-free, gluten-free and vegan.

The “Pure” line is made with fruit (and fruit juices) and spices, and comes in great flavors like Orange Ginger, Blueberry Pomegranate, and Lemon Berry. The products in the “Fit” line have bonus ingredients like hemp seeds or green coffee extract, while the products in the “Luxe” line do have some added sugar for enticing flavors like Cinnamon Candy and Caramel. All flavors have about 100 calories per pouch and would be great on their own, with yogurt, or with oatmeal. (Hmm, could I use them a shortcut for my pain-in-the-ass apple pie?)

I am keeping a stash of Big Slice pouches in my “snack cabinet” at work to have as mid-afternoon snacks before I head off to my holiday parties. If you want to try Big Slice products, look for them at stores like Target, Costco Whole Foods Market, Publix, and The Fresh Market, or enter my giveaway of a great gift pack that includes 12 pouches  of a variety of flavors, a Big Slice tumbler, and more–just like the one Big Slice sent me for this review.

it is SO TRITE but what really works here is clinging tenaciously to the self-care NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS.
    Period.

  2. GadgetGirlJen says:

Social pressure to attend the holiday parties are high at the moment! It’s sound logic to have healthy snacks on-hand and maybe even eat before the dreaded party time if for no other reason than to have a valid excuse.

  3. Marcia says:

I drink seltzer with lime and keep on yakking and walking around. 3 parties so far and that’s my strategy.

  4. I definitely agree that having a snack to curb your appetite before the holiday party is a smart idea! These look good, never heard of them! Last week I had 2 holiday parties to attend, thankfully this week should be quieter. We’re almost there!

  5. Farrah says:

Yay! I love Big Slice Apples!

Staying hydrated really helps for me! I often eat just because I’m thirsty! 😮

  6. You are right the food never tastes as good as it looks except for ours of course! I have never seen these apples-I am intrigued

  7. Chelsea P says:

I always try and have good snacks with me.

  8. These sound delicious! My food allergies tend to keep me away from all the holiday goodies. They’re a blessing and a curse.

    • Coco says:

Hah! Yes, I can see that. Sometimes having to be careful about what you eat really helps you be careful about what you eat. 😉

  9. Elle says:

Since I can’t eat most of the goodies around, I am not really tempted. I do carry my own snacks with me everywhere too. Those apple snacks look great!

  10. Erin Ellis says:

I try to drink even more water than usual to help keep me full. Otherwise the cookies and treats win!

  11. steena says:

Yup. I’ve only been to one party, but ate 1,000 little desserts there. I weighed myself the next day, yucccccccck. It’s so hard, there are treats everywhere!

    • Coco says:

I thought you were the queen of holiday restraint – unless a margarita is involved. 😉 I’m sure most of what you saw on the scale was water weight — you will burn off those desserts on your next run/ride/romp.

  12. Ivanna says:

These sound great. I’ve seen these around the web they’d be interesting to try. Sounds like they could help with a sweet tooth also. I haven’t been to any parties I try to keep my mouth busy drinking tea instead of snacking.

  13. I try to drink as much water as I can before I head out to a party. That way I’ll hopefully feel more full and will be less tempted to snack on the empty calories.

  14. Melanie Dauterive says:

I socialize! Standing around the food table is usually my go to because I am shy, if I socialize more I eat less at parties.

  15. I had to chuckle, you must be reading my mind! My first holiday lunch Friday then off to Wisconsin , the land of brats and beer cheese soup! My hubby is a trooper and split my treats with me so I can get the benefit and half the calories! Life is to short! Great post, I need some of these treats for my drawer!

  16. Toni says:

My tip is to eat a healthy snack before any indulgence, usualky that wards off any overeating

  17. We just had my work Christmas party and that Polar Express Fun Run! I was fine, tho–the work party was all dancing and I didn’t even have time to eat much! The Polar Express had free pizza and I enjoyed but didn’t over do. So far so good.

    • Coco says:

That’s great – there was no dancing at my office party. Just standing and talking and waiters offering us food all night ….

  18. Judith says:

    Drink lots of water!

  19. jill conyers says:

I took the just say no approach to most of the holiday parties. Started that a few years ago and loved it.

  20. Karen says:

I have not even been to parties, but I am struggling a bit. My Mom sent a basket of goodies and I can not stay out of them. I have tried all my strategies: eat something healthy, drink some water, brush my teeth lol maybe I need a new snack 🙂

  21. I totally agree! It’s essential to keep that balance of healthy food this holidays.

  22. Elle says:

My friend just hosted a cookie exchange, so you can take a good guess at what I’ve been over-indulging in. I did try the trick of having a healthy snack before a holiday party so I would eat less “junk” food. It did work and I found myself having appropriate serving sizes.

  23. These sound interesting. I’m a big fan of a banana and a handful of nuts before an event.

  24. Lauren says:

I set a limit for myself before going to a holiday party.

  25. Ashley says:

I try to stay away from the desserts

  26. DJ says:

I try to eat more veggies and make sure that I walk.

  27. janetfaye says:

I limit what I will be going to eat and I don’t attend every holiday party, one is enough for me.
