New to link ups? This post has my top tips for making them work for you.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I am in Colorado visiting my daughter, so forgive me if it takes longer than usual for me to catch up on your coffee date post! This time last year my husband and I went to Toronto and visited Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls Canada

It’s our anniversary weekend, and I like this new tradition of going away together to celebrate. We’re celebrating #27, and since we’ve made it through the sleepless  nights of caring for infants and the sleepless nights of worrying over teens, I think we’ll be celebrating many more.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I am sad to be missing Ragnar this weekend. (Or maybe not, given the weather forecast, but …) Is my foot healed enough for Ragnar? Maybe. But dropping out in August when my foot still was bothering me gave my team enough time to replace me, and let me ramp up my running without the pressure of getting Ragnar-ready by this weekend.

Ragnar D.C. 2014 — so much fun!

Have you done a multi-day relay race? If you are thinking about doing a Ragnar Relay, here are 55 things you should know.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I am really frustrated with the number of hours I spend sitting in front of my computer at work. I know sitting is the new smoking. I’ve told myself over and over again that I would make myself a priority even when deadlines loom. I have a Garmin Vivosmart activity tracker that reminds me to MOVE every hour, and keeps nagging me when I don’t.

Garmin Vivosmart Idle Data

Six hours without enough steps to reset the idle alarm.
Sadly not an atypical day at the office.

It’s so silly. All I need to do is GET UP and MOVE when my Vivosmart tells me to–or at least at the third or fourth reminder. I’m rarely working under a deadline that’s so tight that I can’t take 5 minutes to walk a lap around the office. My thoughts are not so scattered that I wouldn’t be able to pick up where I left off after a short break. I bet there are studies showing that I would work more efficiently and write more brilliantly if I took those breaks. So why is it so hard?

I’ve said it before.

I’m saying it again.

My health is more important than my work.

But this time I mean it.

Yay for Colorado! I hope you’re having fun! I hope I’ll get the chance to visit there someday!

I’m sad about the amount of time I spend sitting/standing around too–I try to incorporate movement wherever/whenever I can, but…all the driving makes that hard too! Yay for the what-you-can-when-you-can philosophy?

  2. Great idea to schedule a getaway like that every year. My husband and I will have been married 20 years in 2016 and we are brainstorming about where we want to go / take a trip to. Luckily we have lots of time to decide because there are too many places we would like to go.

Hope your foot is better !

I get up from my desk often. I think with the influence of internet, I have such a hard time concentrating for a long period of time. So I am up & down often.

  3. Have a wonderful visit with your daughter and happy anniversary. Enjoy your time.

  4. There are soo many days I am bummed by the hours I spent sitting!!! Happy Anniversary!

    • Coco says:

Yeah, I am kicking myself at the end of the day when I’ve let myself sit for hours again. I am going to do better, really!

  5. I like that you and your husband get away for your anniversary. My husband and I are celebrating 23 yrs next weekend and we keep saying we need to plan some time away but the timing never works. Enjoy Colorado and Happy Anniversary!

  6. enjoy your visit and your anniversary! congrats! I feel the way you do about sitting, I sit way to much too and it is horrible! I think some days I only move to the bathroom and back- UGGG- we both need to do better!

  7. happy anniversary again! I hope you are having a great trip with your hubby and visiting your daughter. Despite the weather I am still a little sad about Ragnar. Yay to putting yourself first!

  8. Have fun on your trip! My hubby and I take trips for our anniversary too!
I need to get up when I’m working too. It’s so easy to get sucked in… 🙂

  9. Almost from the beginning, we chose to travel on our anniversary rather than exchange gifts. Never regretted it!

Sorry you had to miss Ragnar. I know the weather isn’t good, but I’m sure it still stings.

  10. Happy anniversary! And I hope you are enjoying your trip. I like your new tradition of traveling. So fun! I had to drop out of a race this weekend too. Injuries suck! And so doesn’t sitting at work all day. Ugh! I try to get up and walk as much as I can. Good thing for the weekends. Thanks for hosting another great coffee date!

  11. Carrie Skoll says:

I hope you’re having a great trip. And, I’ve been following some of the Ragnar DC people and it does seem pretty wet. My husband and I try to go away for our anniversaries too – this year we are going to Napa for our 20th!! 🙂

Happy anniversary! I have never run a multi-day race before, but it’s on my list!

I’m bad about sitting too long as well. I used to have a reminder set that would pop up on my computer, but it got annoying!

  14. Kelli says:

I hear you on the challenges of a desk job. It is very hard to get up and move when you are trying to get work done. My office is starting to purchase the sit/stand desks for people. I am thinking about looking at those.

    • Coco says:

I have a standing desk too, but my back aches after an hour of standing. I guess I need to wear better shoes for that ….

  15. Love that function on fitness trackers – honestly, I think any company whose employees sit at a computer all day should be distributing these to everyone, and we would have fewer people with chronic conditions and extra pounds!

  16. Jessica S says:

It is SO hard to get up from work and move and I’m with you – a few seconds of movement would help and yet I don’t make myself do it somehow. Grr! If you come up with a good solution, be sure to share. 🙂 You’re right, sitting is the new smoking so we’ve got to somehow make ourselves do better.

    Have a good weekend!

  17. I’m so bummed that you couldn’t do Ragnar this year. This was my third, and despite the rain and wind, my team had a blast! I love the idea of going away for your anniversary weekend. My hubby and I spent our 34th on the Outer Banks!

Hope you’re having fun in Colorado. We lived in Denver many years ago, and are planning a hiking/trail running trip back to Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, etc. next summer!

    Thanks for the link-up!

  18. It was very thoughtful of you to step out when your Ragnar team still had time to replace you. It would have been rough if you had to step away last minute.

  19. HoHo Runs says:

I sit a lot at work too. Thankfully, I have to get up quite often to go to the work room and that takes about 50 steps. They add up. It was a crazy week and I’m so sorry I forgot about Coffee Date. It’s one of my favorites!

  20. Colorado sounds nice, I hope to be able to go there one day! I know what you mean about sitting all day behind a computer, I do it too and I also agree it wouldn’t be hard for me to get up often to just stretch my legs but for some reason I can’t…. Loved your Ragnar tips too! Thanks so much for the link up!

  21. Happy anniversary! Hope you had a wonderful weekend! Now that I’m at my desk job, I really struggle with getting up and around. I wish the FitBit would tell me to get up and move!

  22. Carla says:

I bet the studies DO show that—but but but that doesnt mean your brain works that way.
You do so so well with the up early runs and the steps.
    I really am in awe.
    xo

  23. karen says:

I have the exact same problem at work! Sometimes I get stiff, I should never let that happen, but I do time and time again.
I love the idea of an anniversary weekend!
It was probably better to drop the Ragnar, healing time is so important, it is never fun (been there ) but it was smart not to push it. Cheers to staying healthy now 🙂
