Ready To Beat The Deadline For A Comeback

I haven’t written about running since our trip to the Grand Canyon, because the 5 mile run I did before our trip did not end well. After two good runs on the track, I tried out my neighorhood loop, but the combination of the less forgiving surface and more uneven terrain showed me that my foot was still weak. By the time I was almost home there was no denying that I was in pain, so I did the smart thing–for once–and walked the last 1/3 mile back to my house.

Ready For A Comeback

My foot was mostly fine with hiking–although walking down steep trails was tricky–so when we got back from our vacation I started my comeback program again–3 easy miles at the track with at least two days off in between.

That seems to be going well, so when I was offered an opportunity to participate in the National Press Club BEAT THE DEADLINE 5K on September 5, I thought it could be the perfect event to mark my comeback.

Beat The Deadline

While 10 milers are my favorite race distance, I have no plans to race this 5k. I will use my new Garmin 225 to make sure I don’t push my pace (my foot seems to be happy with 10 min miles) and will just enjoy my reentry into the running world.

The BEAT THE DEADLINE 5K also supports a great cause and benefits the ongoing work of the National Press Club Journalism Institute. I am a news junkie, and really appreciate the work of journalists around the world–whether they are reporting from dangerous locations, doing investigative reporting on important issues, or broadening my horizons to new places or different perspectives. The National Press Club Journalism Institute is committed to the future of journalism by helping working journalists improve their skills through ongoing training and programming through scholarships that promote diversity within our profession, and through the promotion of press freedom worldwide.

The race events include a P90X Boot Camp with Tony Horton on Thursday September 3, the 5K on Saturday September 5, and a post-race health and fitness fair and pancake breakfast! If you are going to be in the Washington, D.C. area on Labor Day weekend and want to join me, I have a discount code that will give you $5 off the race registration fee and $5 off the pP90x workout:

5K15ND

When you register (which you can do here) you can choose which t-shirt you want, or pay $10 for both with the proceeds supporting the cause of Jason Rezaian, the Washington Post reporter who is being held in Tehran.

I’d love to see you there!

Good for you, Coco — this is where the name of your blog, Running with PERSEVERANCE, really is apt. I wish you all the best as you work hard to get back your running groove!

I have another great 5K to suggest too, the National Race to End Women’s Cancer 5K on Sunday, Nov. 8th. It’s on Freedom Plaza in DC, the website to learn more and register is endwomenscancer.org.

I’m glad the come back is going well and your foot is handling the track well 🙂 Good luck with the 5k! This sounds like a great race. Sadly, we’re heading out of town that weekend.

  3. I saw something about this race the other day. Looks like a fun one to test out your foot.

  4. What a fun race! I have never heard of it but I imagine you have as many races in DC as we do here in SD. Hope your feet is all good. I ahve never done P90X!

  5. I’m glad to hear you’re on the comeback trail! Hope this 5K will be a good test for your foot.

  6. It does sound like you are on the comeback! I am trying to make a comeback myself after dragging this foot around for 2 weeks! Slow and steady is better than not moving at all! Good luck with that race, great cause!

  7. That sounds like such a fun weekend! Although P90X before a race doesn’t sound like a great idea. Even if it’s just a 5k. But I’ve been known to do a few stupid things myself.

Good luck & will love reading all about it!

Sending continued healing/strengthening vibes for your foot. You’ve been so smart and patient with it! Can’t wait to hear about the race!

  9. HoHo Runs says:

Good luck on your 5k. I think you are smart not to race it. Injuries seem to take so much more time to heal than we think they should. I know it’s been frustrating for you. Kudos for dealing with it so admirably!

  10. Very cool and I would totally do it if we weren’t out of town!

  11. Wishing you all the best in your comeback. Adios heel pain!

  12. Good job listening to you body- take it easy and don’t get swept up in the race.

  13. Welcome back!! Glad that you’re still able to run on your foot at a 10 minute pace – so it seems you’re definitely on the mend! Hope you had a fun 5k this weekend!

  14. Glad you are getting back at it, still bummed about Ragnar though 🙁
