What Is Good About Good Friday?

Today is Good Friday–the day we remember the Crucifixion of Jesus. Why is a day when we remember such a dark event called Good Friday? According to Wikipedia, the etymology is in dispute, but usually is attributed to the use of the word “good” to mean pious or holy. (That’s what I was taught.)

Good Friday

But there is good news in Good Friday. One of the many symbolic messages in the events of Holy Week is that Good Friday is not the end of the story.

The Disciples were devastated and hopeless after their Lord and promised Savior died a painful death on the cross like a heinous criminal. But that despair was transformed on Easter, when Jesus overcame death with His Resurrection, and returned to the Disciples with a promise of eternal life.

When we are going through hard times, we can hold on to hope that the next chapter in our story will be better–whether it’s God, family, or friends (or a combination of all three!)–who pull us through.

I use to dislike the licorice flavors, but now I do not mind them at all! Funny how taste buds evolve through the years.
