Waterfall Wednesday — Visiting Niagara Falls Canada

I never thought of Niagara Falls as a Canadian destination, but when we were planning our trip to Toronto we learned that we could take a day trip to Niagara Falls Canada. We booked a tour on-line and braced ourselves for a hokey tourist experience, but it turned out to be one of the best parts of our trip.

The bus picked us up at our hotel at 8:00 am, and then made a few stops at other hotels before getting on the highway. Louie, our driver and tour guide, kept us entertained through the morning traffic jams by pointing out the sights, sharing local lore, and giving us a preview of the day ahead. Our tour included a stop at a winery that makes 20% of the world’s ice wine, some time in the quaint town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and three full hours at Niagara Falls.

The first thing we did at Niagara Falls was to go on the boat ride. See that little boat in the picture? Yes, they handed out ponchos, and, yes, we wore them, but we still got pretty soaked!

It was really impressive being so close to the falls and
feeling the power of all that water.

As we walked towards the Horseshoe Falls,
we were treated to this rainbow looking back at Rainbow Bridge.

These short videos give a better sense of the tremendous power of the falls.

This is a side view of the Horseshoe Falls from the “Beneath the Falls” tour.

I think the top view of the Horseshoe Falls looks like the earth just collapsed.

How did the daredevils dare to go over in a barrel?

Have you been to Niagara Falls?

How about the Grand Canyon?

Niagara Falls is my home town. Most of those daredevils went over with a lot more water going over the falls. A lot of water is diverted for hydro electric power. There is a series of dams above the falls that spreads the water out otherwise the water would only be going over the two sides of the falls and nothing in the middle. I always feel I have to apologize for the whirlpool below the falls because when I was a child that whirlpool spun and even in those days water was diverted. Now it looks like a pond. Early settlers always referred to the thunder of the falls that could be heard from miles away.

  2. I love Niagara Falls! So beautiful!

I’ve never been to Niagara Falls but your pictures are amazing!!!
I spent about 5 minutes at the Grand Canyon when Jordan was about 5 months old and we were driving out to California.
Ice wine is my all-time favorite – in my opinion, the sweeter wine is the better!!!

You both look so happy / had a lot of fun. I went to Niagara Falls as a child, and the Grand Canyon a few years back.

Haven’t visited Niagara falls yet, but I’d love to! It’s exciting to think that our ancestors were also admiring them, and you both look so happy… 🙂
