August Virtual Coffee Date

It’s the first Saturday in August, which means it’s time to grab a cup of coffee (or other beverage of choice) and pull up a chair for the monthly Virtual Coffee Date.

Virtual Coffee Date

If we were having coffee, I’d make sure you’d seen my exciting news and ask for your honest feedback on my new blog header.

If we were having coffee, I’d try to avoid saying, “Can you believe it’s August already?!” but I’d probably whine about how dark it is when my alarm goes off. Even the weather channel app knows it’s dark!

Pretty soon I’ll need knuckle lights for our 5:15 track workouts. 🙁

If we were having coffee, I’d ask if you’d heard about the study reported last week that found that many obese children think that they are a “normal” weight. My first reaction to the news is that they probably are a “normal” weight given the high level of childhood obesity in this country. In 2011, NPR did an in-depth series called Living Large: Obesity in America that I found very eye-opening. Several episodes focused on Mississippi (as the state with the worst obesity problems) and one of the things that stuck with me was the way the people interviewed used the term “healthy” to describe people who were overweight, and only thought of someone as “overweight” if they were morbidly obese. As some of the doctors interviewed explained, when people don’t see their weight as a problem, they won’t take any steps to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

If we were having coffee, I’d get off my soapbox and ask if you would like to take a few tomatoes from my Mom’s garden, and try one of my great gazpacho recipes (here and here).

Moms Tomatoes

I am trying to find out how many times I can get away with fixing BLTs for dinner. 🙂

If we were having coffee, I’d ask you tell me …

What’s new in your life?

Do you have any vacation plans?

Have you read any good books lately?

  1. I like the new header and love your haircut! Impressed you get up at 5:15 for track workouts. I so wouldn’t do that. Sadly, my vacations are done for a while. The tomatoes look amazing. I could eat them like apples. Fun catching up over coffee today!

I really love the new header! Rita is great to work with, isn’t she? I like how you took your cherry blossom girl and incorporated her.

Loving all the tomatoes right now!

  3. It’s so sad to think that kids think overweight is normal….

  4. That study about what the kids think is normal weight is depressing – but like you said I’m kind of not surprised. Those tomatoes look yummy – off to check out your gazpacho recipes 🙂

  5. We’ve been making BLTs lately too. I love plump, fresh tomatoes!

  6. I like your header- very nice! and I could eat BLT’s as many times as you make them! I just finished The Bridesmaids, funny easy read review is up my blog. Happy Sunday!

Yum…tomatoes! We make a weekly batch of turkey chili and I love fresh tomatoes in it. Your blog header is adorable! We have one last trip planned the end of August (which will be here in a flash). We’ll be camping in the mountains and we’re all looking forward to some time on the lake for fishing 🙂

Well, I’m so far behind on reading and commenting that I’m past coffee and actually having a glass of wine while reading this:)
I have some friends who have way too many tomatoes and others who couldn’t get any to grow this year – funny how varied it was!!!

We do tomatoes every year. Ours are looking great this year but 95% still green….once they are all red? Oh yeah, trying to figure out what all to do! I am determined to make salsa this summer & can it for winter. We make a lot of caprese salads in the summer time.
