Milestone Pod Review

FTC Notice: The people at Milestone Pod provided the products for this Milestone Pod review and giveaway. All opinions are my own.

I first heard about Milestone Pod early last year, when they were raising money through indiegogo to bring the product to market. It sounded like such a great idea, I made a contribution and crossed my fingers that they would reach their goal.

Milestone Pod Review

I know that running shoes should be replaced about every 300 miles, but I am horrible about keeping track of the mileage I put on my shoes. I can’t even remember when I bought my current pair of shoes, and usually have to resort to my Facebook or Instagram history, searching for an excited “New Shoes!” post.  With that information in hand, I try to estimate how much I’ve been running and caluclate a rough estimate of my shoe mileage. That all falls apart if I’ve been wearing more than one pair of shoes, which I have been doing lately, keeping my trusty Mizunos for my longer runs and having fun with lighter shoes (like the new Reebok ZQuick shoes) on shorter runs or treadmill workouts.

So, why was I so excited about Milestone Pod?

Milestone Pod automatically tracks your mileage! The Pod has a mini computer inside that tracks your mileage and keeps a running tally (no pun intended!) of every mile you’ve walked or run. How cool is that?!

As the Milestone Pod got closer to becoming a reality, I reached out to them and asked if they needed any help beta testing their pods. I was thrilled when they said that they actually did need more data from women! I spent a few months taking my pod on test runs, comparing its mileage to the mileage on my Garmin or treadmill, and sharing my “user experience” with the developers. It was so fun to be involved “behind the scenes” and watch the progress as they put on the finishing touches.

Milestone Pod On Mizunos

As the Milestone Mod website explains:

Simply lace the pod through your shoe and begin your work out. The pod collects data as soon as it senses movement. No buttons, no waiting, no hassle. Track your mileage for every run – your pod goes with you everywhere. There is no need to disconnect from shoe!

You can just use the pod (you can see the mileage on the face), or you can get more information about your runs using the app.

Milestone Pod App

This is the dashboard view on the app. As you can see, it tracks distance, time, pace and even cadence. How cool is that?! There is a page where you can dig deeper into each run and calibrate the pod data if your Garmin or treadmill mileage data differ from what the pod recorded.

Other features of the Milestone Pod include:

  • User friendly! No need to run with your phone or recharge a battery
  • Rain and sweat proof (I can vouch for this after this wet run!)
  • Suitable for indoor and outdoor use, from treadmill to trail
  • No buttons to push, the Pod senses when you start your run or walk (Love this!)
  • Pod remains attached to your shoe for the life of your shoes; Pod can be reset and transferred to new pair
  • LED light will blink red when it’s time to replace shoes, green other times
  • USB connector stores emergency medical information for first responders
  • Wirelessly sync to your phone to view detailed activity data including distance, pace, cadence, and total mileage

The Milestone Pod is available on the MilestonePod website for $19.95.

I’m horrible about buying new running shoes. I’ve had my current running shoes for three years … Yikes 🙁

  2. Carla says:

oooh I LOVE THIS IDEA and if I won Id gift to my RUNNING SISTER who always needs new shoes—and doesnt know it:)

  3. Cassie says:

Normally, my feet and knees will start to not feel so great. Then, I switch out my shoes. This would help to not have to rely on my body to tell me!

  4. RFC says:

What a neat concept! I NEVER keep track of how many miles are on my shoes. I typically just notice when my body and knees start to hurt…eek.

  5. I’m horrible about replacing my shoes. I don’t track the miles I’ve run very well and I end up doing a rough estimate when my shoes start to look a little too beat up.

  6. Yum Yucky says:

Ohhh. I’m not big on tech stuff, but this is an excellent idea. If I win, I’m gonna give it to my son. He’s still having some occasion pain since recovering from the broken foot — easing back into running slowly. He’ll get there. This would be a great tool for him.

  7. Yum Yucky says:

I currently decide when to buy a new pairs of runners based on how many holes are in the sneakers. Ooops.

  8. Anna says:

This would be amazing to put on my shoes, I currently rotate three pairs and just “guesstimate” my mileage on them.

  9. Nikki Coco Ramirez says:

Been looking for something like this.

  10. oh man!! The hubby and I could so use this! We usually realize we need new shoes at the sign of knee pain! lol!

  11. Lauren says:

    This would be so useful!

  12. Jovan B. says:

When I find a cool new pair to buy.

  13. I bought one and I love it so far. But I also use two pairs of shoes….one more than the other though. I use mapmyrun.com to track the mileage on my shoes.

  14. Rhona says:

I usually wait too long to replace my shoes and sore feet are the result …

  15. Natasha says:

Sadly, I usually replace shoes when I can feel rocks and things through the soles. No bueno.

  16. This product sounds so cool! I like that it is useful on the treadmill OR trail. AND it’s one less button to push if you’ve already got your hands full pushing a jogging stroller 🙂 Thanks for the review!

  17. Tessa says:

I keep track with my iPhone app

  18. I would love to try one of these! Right now I just guess when I should buy new running shoes.

  19. Crystal (@phatycake) says:

When my shoes start decomposing, lol. Love this review and giveaway♡♡♡

  20. Liz S says:

I track all my miles in my run log, but sometimes I forget which pair of shoes I ran in since I rotate through 3 different pairs. This would make life so much easier. I need to get one for each pair

  21. I am bad about remembering when yo buy so I try to do it by estimating months.

  22. Tom says:

This would be so helpful for me as I never seem to know when to switch out! Thanks for doing this raffle!

  23. Erin C says:

Oh so cool! I enjoyed admiring yours when we ran together mid-February! I would love this as I have never tracked my miles on my shoes. Instead I’ll get a new pair every 6 months or when my legs start to ache. I think this would be helpful as I (*gulp*) get older to prevent injury!

  24. Tess Moore says:

I usually buy a new pair of running shoes twice a year…….Christmas and my Birthday (May). My shoes start to become so molded and cushion squished I can feel the outside surface like I was running barefoot……New shoe time :0

  25. David Burns says:

I usually replace shoes when I feel pain

  26. Vicki says:

Do you have to enter s stride length?

    • Coco says:

Nope, nothing like that. Maybe that’s why they have the option to calibrate in the app, but even before they added that my beta version was pretty accurate.

  27. Becky says:

this is a great idea, especially for people like me who have no idea how far they go

  28. OMG, this is so cool! I have never heard of this. Can you transfer it from shoe to shoe or is it only for one pair?

    • Coco says:

You should use it on one shoe at a time, but it can be reset for the next pair (and the next) as long as the battery lasts.

  29. Interesting! I did a test run for another shoe wear tracker Mino last week. Love to know what you think. It’s a little different and less high tech

  30. Heather C. @ Run Heather, Run says:

I have been looking for a mileage counter like this forever! I received a mileage counter in my Runnerbox once, but it isn’t digital (it just lights up) and it goes inside your shoe. I like that this counter is visible at all times and has an app that goes with it. I will definitely check them out for my next pair of shoes!

  31. Audra O. says:

What a cool idea! I usually know to replace my shoes when my IT band starts to bother me. I’ve been *trying* to keep track of my mileage in one, super-long note in my phone. We’ll see if I can keep it up. :p

    • Coco says:

I am so bad at logging my miles. Once they are done (and Instagrammed!) they are done. Maybe this would help you replace your shoes before your ITB acts up! 😉

  32. Jason says:

Idea good. Implementation is terrible. This thing I’d a total piece of junk. 4 runs with it and despite following all instructions to the letter, it missed one run altogether and send to think a10 miler was over at 2.2.

Maybe I got a dud but I wouldn’t pay a cent for this thing. I got mine free and still feel ripped off.

    • Coco says:

Sorry to hear you didn’t like it. They have great customer service if you contact them, they may be able to send you a replacement.

      • Jason says:

Update: MilestonePod ceo reached out to me with a sincere apology that the first one didn’t work and mailed me a replacement. Seems like I got a lone dud the first time. The replacement works. I seems to be reasonably accurate at distance (within about 1% of what my GPS or map distance tracking says) and the foot strike data is pretty much in line with what I’d expected as well.

I greatly appreciate their customer service and it seems like it *can* actually do what it claims.

My apologies to them. They certainly made things right.
