Five Ways To Discourage Blog Comments

They don’t call it “comment love” for nothing. Bloggers love blog comments! Bloggers know that they have many more readers than commenters, and we all want to encourage more people to comment on our blogs. I certainly don’t have the answer, but I can tell you why I don’t comment on your blog.

1.  You use a captcha spam filter.

We all hate captcha. I may try it once. Too often, once is not enough for it to work.

2.  You already have 50 comments. Even if your post is brilliant, if you already have a lot of blog comments, I may feel like I don’t have anything more to add.

3.  I can’t figure out how to comment. I’m pretty blog-savvy, but it’s happened. If I have to click through to another screen to comment–especially if I have to click a link at the top of the post–I may get lost on my way to comment land.

4.  I’m reading your blog on my iPhone. Maybe it’s my fault for having a 10-character email address and an even longer blog address, but I hate having to tap all that out on my iPhone. Blame Apple for not giving us auto-fill for blog comments.

5. I don’t have anything to say.

(For some other great blogging tips, check out Carrie’s 5 Tips For New Bloggers, which got me thinking about this one.)

How about you? What makes you more or less likely to comment?

I can relate with all of that. Especially #1, blogger sites are the most difficult.

I have not commented when I had to login and look for my password. Now the auto-login is working for me. Yes, I hate #1 !

number 1 is the most infuriating! I swear CAPTCHAs are getting harder. I used to have no problem with them but now I can hardly read them at all! I just can't be bother to go through all of that effort unless I really have something I NEED to say.
That being said, I have recently started using this cool new program (skipinput.com) that enters the CAPTCHAs for me so I don't even have to bother trying! I have found it really excellent at erasing this minor inconvenience from my life! Maybe other CAPTCHA loathers will be interested.

Ditto! And thanks for linking to my thoughts.

I set a few auto text things on my phone for my email address. But I still don't comment often from my phone.

Great post, you pretty much said everything I've been thinking – I often want to comment but people make it hard to do so.. the darn captcha. Or not allowing me to use my name/url in blogger – I don't always wanna use my Google Acct to comment because it's my personal email, not the one I use for commenting. Also, people that use livewire or something like that make me not wanna comment cause I don't wanna sign up for that service or log in every time.

  6. Great points! And, I loathe CAPTCHA – instant turn off for me!

  7. Elle says:

Ditto! You said it all… and I might not have commented cause I don't have anything to add, but today I did anyway! hahahahah

hahaha this is too funny! I try to go through the list everyday on FitFluential and comment on blogs.. {well the days I have time} I love to comment though and share my opinon but some I just don't have anything to say so I dont'! (:

thanks for the tips! I'm new to blogging and still figuring all this out… it's SO COMPLICATED!! argh

One tip is to sign out of your blogging platform and view your blog as a visitor would. Does it load OK? Does it look OK? Is it easy to figure out how to comment? Is it easy to leave a comment? Sometimes there are things we can't see/notice when we are logged in.

  10. I am a pretty smart person and for the life of me I cannot read some of those captcha/word recognition things. Arrrgggghhhh

  11. These are great – thanks – and also reasons I don't comment. I read a lot more blogs than I comment on too. Thanks again!

Yep..all of the above. Most of the time, the only time i get to read blogs are when I'm on the go. I get back and comment when I remember.
