Running Safety Versus Shade

It was another steamy morning when my friend and I headed out for our 8 mile run.

Aug 5 Weather

Look at the humidity. I swear it’s the humidity!

It would have been nice to run along the shady path we ran on last weekend, but neither of us felt comfortable about that path. We were running on Sunday instead of Saturday, and we were starting about half an hour earlier, so we thought fewer people would be out. The path is set apart from the road, and is pretty isolated for long stretches. When I told my friend that a woman had been assaulted on the path last week, we headed in the opposite direction–in full view of busy roads, where we had clear sight lines in all directions. So, we chose running safety over shade.

We did our best to run in what shade their was–crossing the street to be under more mature trees or in the shadows of bigger buildings–but it was rough with no breeze (although our pace was a bit better than last weekend). I was a sweaty mess when we finished, and very glad to see that our office gym was open so I could rinse the sweat out of my eyes and cool down in the excessive air-conditioning before I drove home.

When I saw that the Olympic women’s marathon was still on, I decided to stay for the finish. I stretched, planked and foam rolled while those amazing women ran faster and longer than I ever will!

  1. I always do my best to feel safe. I run in Philly, so I'm sure it's the same deal as you. Sometimes you just feel uncomfortable, so you have to be smart and change the plan. 🙂

    Olympic marathon = jaw dropping.

Going with your gut on safety is always smart. I'm sad to say that I didn't get to watch the marathon live, my Olympics watching has been pretty inconsistent. But, those ladies are amazing.

I run in a very busy area (loop around a university) but whenever I venture off to less used paths I think about the many women who have been assaulted and it makes me nervous, even in the middle of the day!
